Shoot (1) Evaluation – Narrative

On our narrative shoot, we were able to get many shots however a lot of them were quite similar in distance and angle so we needed more variety which we took into consideration for our next shoot. Plus, we realised that we had quite a few shots that included alcohol so we had to make a slight change to our narrative.

Here are some photos from our filming day:

Overall, I think that the shoot went quite well as in the end we came out with good shot angles and distances which we set out to achieve. Some of the good shots included close ups of Jacob in the car and an argument scene which we see through a mirror.

In our next shoot, we need to get the rest of the shots that we were unable to get in this shoot which are located at Bordeaux when the couple are happy together in their relationship and also when they meet at the end of the video. Other shots we need are trigger shots such as the polaroid and the phone as our narrative is set in the present day when the couple have broken up but we are cutting to clips of the couple when they are happy in their relationship and also the negative moments so we get can feel a connection with the characters.

Rough Cut – Performance – Feedback

Once we had uploaded our rough cut of our performance to YouTube we received a few comments informing us what we did well and what things can be changed/improved. This allows us to get an understanding of how the music video is coming along. The YouTube comments consist of elements such as camera movement, angles and distances, editing to the beat, lip syncing, mise-en-scene such as costume and setting, and lighting.

An audience member said ‘there are some very long takes of the performance’. In our next draft, we will make sure that we shorten the clips or put narrative over some of it so that the shots aren’t so long to create an authentic music video.

Someone else added ‘colours of the performance for example saturation’. In the following draft, we will play around with the saturation and RGB levels of the performance shots to add more definition and so that our editing is consistent throughout.

Shoot Evaluation – Performance (3)

Looking back at our previous 2 shoots, we realised that we could have got even more shots such as wide shots and close ups so this is why we needed to re-shoot to make sure we got these important shots.

As time was becoming even more limited, we decided that our studio location worked better for us and you didn’t have to depend on the weather so we thought for our third performance shoot it would be in there. For continuity, we made sure the lighting was the same as the previous time. However, this time we had the whole band together which enabled us to get wide shots and many other shots.

These are some of the photos we took whilst filming:

In this shoot, we decided to use a hand held tripod to make our shots more interesting and gave us an opportunity to experiment with a different piece of equipment.

In the images above, you can see Beth and I experimenting with the camera angles alongside with me holding an extra light so we can focus in on the lead singer.

Shoot Evaluation – Performance (2)

Our second filming shoot was located on the common. On this day it turned out to be very windy and cold so we had to make sure we were equip for this sort of weather condition and be weary of the tripods and other filming equipment so they wouldn’t blow over.

This time we had our drummer which was unable to make the previous performance shoot although our guitarist was unavailable so we made the most of it and concentrated on a variety of shots of the drummer alongside with the two other members of the band.

This is a photo we took whilst on shoot:

To improve this shoot, we would need the full band together to get the vital wide shots. Also, we could have picked a better day to film however we are limited for time so we need to make the most of it and film whenever we have chance to.

Shoot Evaluation – Performance (1)

Our first performance shoot took place in the drama studio and we re-arranged the room to make it ideal for the performance. This included moving the unnecessary chairs out of the way, adjusting the studio lights with mainly white and red lights and bringing forward the three screens we had.

Here are some of the pictures we took during the shoot:

In order to have as many shots as we could we used two cameras and tripods with a variety of shot distances and angles. We got quite a lot of close ups of the lead singer as this is a typical convention for a band and their genre. We got other interesting shots such as close up of the pianist’s hands on the piano, close up of hands on the guitarist’s guitar and two shots between the lead singer and the guitarist to highlight their relationship and connection within the band.

To improve from this shoot, we would to have the drummer in the shoot as he wasn’t available to perform at this time so we were unable to get wide shots of the whole band.
