Communicating My Brand!

The aim of this task was to enable me to find some inspiration through the use of  professional magazines,  previous pop artists, different typefaces and different colour palletes.

  • This will be helpful for me because it will allow me to understand what other professional magazines did and it will give me inspiration.
  • The use of facial expression was also good when helping to portray a specific meaning. As well as body language to help show the mood behind the actor and what they might be trying to portray.

In doing this task I have learnt how I can use different colours and different typefaces to portray a different meaning. As well as the use of different angles and different types of framing and different distances

  • This is helpful because it allows me to understand what I would have to do to be able to portray a specific meaning to my audience.
  • The use of Mise-En-Scene will also be good for me through the use of costume, hair and makeup, setting and props. This would be good because it would allow me to use these aspects to create different feelings and show different emotions.

This will help me in the future for when I go to create my own magazine.

  • This will help me because it would allow me to understand what I will have to include in my photo and how they will help to portray a meaning to the audience.
  • This will also help me in the future to gain a visualization of what I would like my magazine to look like and how I will use all of these different aspects to achieve this.

My Audience Profile

We did this task because it allowed us to understand and create a specific target audience that our magazine would be focused on.

  • This would be good because it would help me to understand what I would have to do to attract this type of audience

To complete this task I had to become creative and make a dating profile for my specific target audience.

  • This allowed me to understand what I would have to do to be able to attract my specific target audience and what i would have to include to be able to accomplish this.

This will help me in the future to understand what I will have to do and include and what I would include when I go to make my actual magazine.

  • It gives me all the information I would need and what attraction the specific audience would find in magazines like this.

So… I’m ready to make some media!

Over the first half term I have learnt many different skills that would enable me to learn new things and will help me to create my own types of media.

One thing that we have been taught about could be the use of Mise-En-Scene and how we can use it to understand different meanings behind an image. We have also been taught about what we can do with the camera. For example the use of light exposure, aperture, different types of shots. We have also been taught about the meanings of psychographics and demographics in order to help portray a specific meaning directly to someone.  One thing that you would have to think about would be the use of Indesign and Photoshop. Within Indesign and Photoshop you are able to changes images and text. Another thing that will help me is magazine design conventions. We have learnt about things such as masthead, plug, pug cover star and star image. These will overall help me to make better media.

Overall I believe that these skills will help me to create better media in the future and will also help me me portray a more specific meaning.

Branding Ideas + Mission Statement

Genre of magazine and why I chose it

I have decided that I am going to be using POP as the genre of my magazine. I have decided this because I feel like it will be fun and vibrant. I also chose to use POP because it is something that I understand. I also feel like that there is a large target audience within the genre of POP.

Name of magazine

I have decided to use the name SWIFT. I have decided the use the name SWIFT because I feel like it relates to the speed of the music and the type of music it is. For example quite a few songs are upbeat.

This is the mission statement that comes with ‘Swift’ magazines.

‘Swift’ is a magazine that will help promote and celebrate pop music. ‘Swift’ will magazine is the perfect magazine for the pop music lovers. In this magazine we will include information about up and coming bands and bands that have already made it. The magazine will explain all you need to know about your favorite pop artist.

Previous Students Work

In this task my aim was to evaluate a previous students work and determine all of the different ways that the student created meaning and attracted her audience to the magazine. We had to include the use of Photoshop and camera, Mise-En-Scene and what it communicates, the choice of words that engage a specific audience and the creative use of DTP. I think that this will help me in the future as it will allow me to understand what I have got to do to enable myself to get the most out of my audience and attract a specific audience.

Use of camera and Photoshop

  • I personally believe that the use of camera and Photoshop was very well used in this magazine. One reason I believe this is because of the use of the variety of different shots.
  • For example on the front cover they used a group mid-shot. I believe that this was good as it allows the viewers to understand the theme and what they were trying to achieve with the picture.
  • It was a good way of portraying a meaning of rock towards to people that were reading the magazine. I also feel like the use of Photoshop was very key in portraying a meaning towards to audience. I feel like the use of Photoshop was very slick in the way they cut many of the pictures out. For example I believe that the first picture on the front cover was very effective as the cut out of all of the people was very precise and looked very slick.

Mise-En-Scene and what it communicates

  • I personally think that the use Mise-En-Scene was good throughout the entirety of the magazine. Personally I believe that the use of facial expression was very key in the magazine.
  • One reason I think this is that it was a very good way of creating a specific meaning. In all of the pictures the facial expressions are very dull and glum.  I also believe that the use of costume were very key in this magazine.
  • I believe this because it is very minimalist but is a very creative way in creating the feeling of rock. This is because of the colour that was used throughout the costumes.
  • I also think that the use of the colour of the font was good because it creates the feeling of rock. This is because the colour is very minimalist but it does not clash with the other colours and the background images. This creates a mysterious feeling and it also seems quite eerie.

The choice of words that engage a specific audience

I believe that the use of words used in this magazine article were very effective. I believe this because they were very good at drawing in the readers attention through the way in which they addressed many of their topics. I believe that in many cases the way in which the previous student attracted the audience was very effective as it instantly drew them in and it made them want to carry on reading.

  • The use of the writing was also good as it doesn’t bore the readers. The use of the righting is all interesting which means that the readers were always engaged and didn’t get bored of reading the magazine. I also think that the use of the writing was very good as it was made clearly understandable what you were going to be reading about which means the audience wouldn’t start to read it and then get bored of it.
  • In doing this it also meant that the viewers would be constantly engaged in what they were reading because they knew what it wsa going to be about.

The creative use of DTP

  • I personally believe that the creative use of InDesign in this magazine is the best thing in the entire project. One reason I think this is because of the way use the images and the writing together. On the front cover of the magazine the student was very creative in the way she overlapped all of her writing with her picture.
  • This was good because she had to make sure that the colours didn’t clash within the font and the picture. I also think that this was good because of the way the images and the text linked together.

The use of the images still allowed there to be space for the text without the picture becoming far too cluttered. I also think that the use of all of the typefaces were very good in the way in which they linked with the theme.

My Tour Poster!

 `]

In this task we were challenged to create our own tour poster. Once we had created our tour we had to do a feedback sheet which determines what we did well and what we did not so well within the tour poster. We had to include things such as, did our magazine follow the brief? Where the use of colours within the poster good? Was your use of typeface good? Where the use of graphics and images good? Was the use of the copy good? and Where the connotations good?

This will be helpful for me in the future as it will allow me to fully understand all of the small details that I would have to include to help portray a meaning. This will help me in the future for when I want to create my actual poster and magazine and it would allow me to completely understand all the details I would have to include.

My copy of professional magazine front page!

For this task we took a professional music cover and we tried to use Indesign to recreate the professional cover. We did this to help us understand all of the different functions that come with Indesign and what each and everyone one of them does. This will be helpful to me as it will allow me to understand what all the functions do when I create my own from cover magazine.

3 Positives
  • I think that one of the positives that we can take from this could be the space between the letters. I think that this was good because it means it didn’t take up loads of unnecessary space on the post. The tool that I used what called the ‘horizontal scale’ and this allowed me to change the space in between the letters which made it look a lot more official and more legible. It also means that the main focus is not just in the font as it is not taking up most of the page. It allows the viewers main focal point to not just be on the writing.
  • I think that another one of my strengths would have to be the use of the correct colour. I think that this is good because colour is a key factor in to attract people to view the music magazine. The use of colour is good because it is part of Mise-En-Scene. It is good as a good way of attracting different types of viewers through the brightness of the colours. I also think that colour was good because I managed to get the same tone of pink for the main titles, although I couldn’t get the correct colours for every piece of writing.
  • I think that my final positive would come from the use of the size of each font. I think that these were good because it didn’t take up too much room when putting the writing in. I also think that it is good because it allows the audience to understand whats in the magazine without taking away the main focal point.
3 Negatives
  • I think that the actual image in the background could be one negative. I think this because the image comparison is different as my image is far more zoomed in onto the model than the actual magazine is. This means that the image looks blurry and looks less legible to be the front cover of a famous magazine.
  • I think that another negative could be that the font in the bottom left of the magazine. I think this because I had to outline the picture as it wouldn’t allow me to have the correct colour font due to the outline. I think this is bad because it doesn’t look very clear and it makes it look like that part of the post is cluttered.
  • I think another negative could be the placement of the bar code in the bottom left on the article. I think this as I was no able to get the bar code fully into the corner whereas on the original it is in the very bottom corner.  I think that this is bad because it takes up a lot of space in the picture and it makes it look out of place.

Here are some of the videos in which I used to help me with Indesign.

A front cover analysed!

The idea behind this post was to unpick a professional magazine. We were various types of methods to try and unpick and analyse various different parts of a professional magazine. When unpicking the magazine we were understand how they use various things such as font, colour palette, images and language. By doing this it allows us to understand the specific meaning that the magazine is trying to portray.

We also tried to establish the type of people that a magazine like this would target. This could be through the use of demographics and psychographic’s.  The use of the mission statement is also good as it allows you to understand what the magazine is all about.

Doing this will help me in the future as it will allow me what I will have to do to attract a specific target audience and what I would have to include. This could be though the use of Mise-En-Scene. Unpicking a professional magazine will allow me to understand what I would have to do to creative a successful magazine and what it would have to include. By doing this it will help you to establish your target audience which could include popularity.

I think that all of this learning is useful because it would help me to understand why a magazine company might put certain thing into the magazine and what the meaning they are trying to portray could actually be and what effect it has got on the readers.

So… How can an image communicate meaning?

Personally I think that they are many ways in which an image can communicate meaning through the use of Mise-En-Scene and framing.

People:

Personally I believe that the use of this can communicate the meaning of people because it could have a link to their individuality. The use of Mise-En-Scene could help these people to portray these different types of individuality. For example the use of hair, makeup and accessories could help sometime to understand the difference that they may have to some people. The use of framing could also be good as it helps to communicate a meaning.

Places:

The use of Mise-En-Scene is also very key to help communicate places to people as scenery could be good to as it allows to viewers to understand where the scenery might be set, which portrays a meaning to the viewers. The use of framing could also be good because it helps to create a specific meaning and vibe to the viewers and it also helps to explain what might be happening.

I think that this would help me in future projects as it would allow me to understand what I would have to do to portray a specific meaning. This could be through the use of accessories, hair, makeup, setting. This would also allow me to approach my work in a different manor as it would allow me to understand fully what I needed to do to portray the meaning I was after. Overall I think that the use of Mise-En-Scene and framing would be good as it would make the entire planning a lot easier.

Audience Profiling

The idea of this task was to see if the use of colour masthead, name, colors, design, articles and images. Our aim for this task was to be able to understand all of the psychographics that come with many different types of professional magazines. We did this to allow us to create an understanding of how different types of people could be attracted to magazines.

The idea of the task was  I think that in doing this is would allow and help us to understand the different ways in which  a magazine might attract different types of people. I have learnt that to portray a specific meaning and attract a specific audience I would have to make the masthead, colours, design and images match the specific audience in which I was trying to attract.

I am going to use this to help me attract a set target audience with a specific theme.
