Preliminary Print Tasks

My Tour Poster!

 `]

In this task we were challenged to create our own tour poster. Once we had created our tour we had to do a feedback sheet which determines what we did well and what we did not so well within the tour poster. We had to include things such as, did our magazine follow the brief? Where the use of colours within the poster good? Was your use of typeface good? Where the use of graphics and images good? Was the use of the copy good? and Where the connotations good?

This will be helpful for me in the future as it will allow me to fully understand all of the small details that I would have to include to help portray a meaning. This will help me in the future for when I want to create my actual poster and magazine and it would allow me to completely understand all the details I would have to include.

My copy of professional magazine front page!

For this task we took a professional music cover and we tried to use Indesign to recreate the professional cover. We did this to help us understand all of the different functions that come with Indesign and what each and everyone one of them does. This will be helpful to me as it will allow me to understand what all the functions do when I create my own from cover magazine.

3 Positives
  • I think that one of the positives that we can take from this could be the space between the letters. I think that this was good because it means it didn’t take up loads of unnecessary space on the post. The tool that I used what called the ‘horizontal scale’ and this allowed me to change the space in between the letters which made it look a lot more official and more legible. It also means that the main focus is not just in the font as it is not taking up most of the page. It allows the viewers main focal point to not just be on the writing.
  • I think that another one of my strengths would have to be the use of the correct colour. I think that this is good because colour is a key factor in to attract people to view the music magazine. The use of colour is good because it is part of Mise-En-Scene. It is good as a good way of attracting different types of viewers through the brightness of the colours. I also think that colour was good because I managed to get the same tone of pink for the main titles, although I couldn’t get the correct colours for every piece of writing.
  • I think that my final positive would come from the use of the size of each font. I think that these were good because it didn’t take up too much room when putting the writing in. I also think that it is good because it allows the audience to understand whats in the magazine without taking away the main focal point.
3 Negatives
  • I think that the actual image in the background could be one negative. I think this because the image comparison is different as my image is far more zoomed in onto the model than the actual magazine is. This means that the image looks blurry and looks less legible to be the front cover of a famous magazine.
  • I think that another negative could be that the font in the bottom left of the magazine. I think this because I had to outline the picture as it wouldn’t allow me to have the correct colour font due to the outline. I think this is bad because it doesn’t look very clear and it makes it look like that part of the post is cluttered.
  • I think another negative could be the placement of the bar code in the bottom left on the article. I think this as I was no able to get the bar code fully into the corner whereas on the original it is in the very bottom corner.  I think that this is bad because it takes up a lot of space in the picture and it makes it look out of place.

Here are some of the videos in which I used to help me with Indesign.

The Camera Talks

The aims of this was to try and use different camera angles to portray a different meaning through various different pictures. This will allow me to understand and create a meaning when I plan to make my music magazine with the front cover page. For example if I were trying to do an angry magazine I would be able to show it through the use of the picture as it would create a meaning to the viewers.

I believe that we achieved our aims with these pictures quite well. I think this because of the way in which we were able to show emotions through use of depth of field, aperture and lighting. I can use this is my production work to allow me to portray a different meaning to the viewers through things like depth of field, aperture and lighting.

Some of that hashtags I used were good in showing different emotions and feelings that the images might be representing. For example some of the adjectives such as isolated and alone represent the emotions and the feelings that are current in the picture. Another example of this could be loneliness and segregation in which portrays two different emotions but both portray a similar meaning.

Technical Camera Terms

We have been studying cameras this week. We have been studying things such as distance, framing, angles and composition. When doing our photo shoot we were trying to portray the feeling of isolation, depression and anger. In many aspects I think that we achieved what were were trying to portray, but in some of the cases this is not true.

For example picture 8718 did not have enough light exposure. This means we should have increases the aperture as it would have allowed more light into the picture allowing us to show of the model more. As we didn’t have the correct aperture on this photo it means that we were unable to see the model and the entire photo was just dark.

Furthermore I think that image 8703 had too much light exposure in the picture. This means that there was too much aperture in the picture and there was not enough shutter speed. I also think that the use of depth of field was poor as it meant that the model was too far away and you couldn’t really see what was happening.

Overall I think that we did quite a good job of capturing all of the different emotions that we were trying to portray all of the different feelings and emotions. The use of shutter speed and aperture linked together were very effective in creating different effects on the images.

For example image 8676 had way too little light exposure due to the aperture settings.

My image that use Mise-En-Scene for meaning!

We were given a set genre to research. Our allocated Genre was Punk. On doing research we found many different types of punk music. We found out punk items included things such as leather jackets, denim jackets, bracelets and Mohawks.

We decided that the idea of a punk theme consisted of very dark ideas. We decided that the idea of punk was quite edgy. Punks tend to be very out there with their dress code. They also seem to be very aggressive with the facial expression that they might make. This creates the feeling of rebellious and and fierce. Punks are represented as bold and this could come across from the idea of their accessories that they might be wearing or the facial expressions that they might be making.

After doing all of our research we decided that we wanted to dress our models up in quite a dark fashion. I think that the use of Mise-En-Scene to create our punk as things such as makeup, hair and accessories were very key to making our punks. Many members of our class believed that we did very well in creating the idea of a punk. They believed that the use of hair and makeup to make our model look rough and messy.

Some of the adjectives used were things such as

  • Rebel
  • Freak
  • Fierce
  • Expressive
  • Emotional
  • Dark
  • Edgy
  • Cool
  • Gothic

IMG 0134 – I think that the use of facial expression in this picture was quite good. I also think that the proxemics between the actors were good as it shows the togetherness of the punks.

IMG 0147 – I also think that this picture is good as it shows the actor looking into the distance. It creates a feeling of emotion as he doesn’t want to make eye contact with the camera.

IMG 0138 – I don’t think that this image is very good as you cant see much of the facial expressions coming from the actor. It doesn’t allow you to understand the feelings of the actor.

I believe that this picture works better than the rest of them because of the facial expressions on both of the actors. I believe this because it looks like the actors are looking into the picture to try and portray a specific meaning to the viewers. I also think this is good because it creates a mysterious kind of feeling. Overall I think that the purpose of Mise-En-Scene is a very important way in portraying a specific meaning with the viewers. I believe this as it allows the viewers to engage with the media, whether this may be through the use of accessories, makeup, hair, lighting or setting. It is a good way to connote a specific meaning to the audience.

Print Media that communicates meaning

This picture contains a Rita Ora tour poster. The purpose of this poster is to attract all of her fans with the use of various different parts of Mise-En-Scene. Mise-En-Scene is the arrangement of props, makeup and hair, setting, costume, lighting and acting which allow media to portray a specific meaning. I have labelled many different parts of this poster as they all show different parts of Mise-En-Scene. Doing this has taught me to understand all the different aspects of Mise-En-Scene and what they connote.  This knowledge will help me to make my own work in the future as it allows me to understand all the different ways that Mise-En-Scene can portray different meanings. The use of connotations in this poster creates a specific feeling or meaning that the poster is trying to portray. Whereas the use of denotations shows the actual meaning that the poster might be portraying.
