Detailed Music Video analysis

In this exercise we analysed two videos in depth in order to learn how to deconstruct the narrative, performance, star image and generic & technical conventions of a music video to help us with our own production ideas. I learnt that inter textual references can be made in a narrative music video to underline multiple key messages as well as the importance of the star image and camera movement.

I have now learnt that is it important to have a clear narrative and decide whether I want the correlation between my song and narrative to be illustrative, amplified, or whether I want to use disjuncture to convey the message and meaning behind my song of choice. I will also remember to think carefully about the type of camera movement and technical features I use in order to successfully create a good music video that captures the mood of the song effectively. I have also learnt that I need to choose the characters outfits accordingly so that they fit the mood of my song, especially if I am avoiding disjuncture between my narrative and the video as his would confuse the audience.
