Favourite Music Video from Former Student

My favorite student video from the class of 2019 is Rather Be With You because of the way the the narrative and setting fitted perfectly with the lyrics and feel of the song. In the song the singer is thinking about getting back together with an ex as she remembers all the fun times she had with him. The video was filmed in a large house with a big garden which helped add a fairy tale feel to the narrative and ensured that the video had a wide variety of settings in the scenes to keep the audience engaged. For example, there was a scene in the garden when the couple had a picnic on a big lawn which was an effective use of the space they had available. I also liked the editing speed of the video as it was fast paced and conveyed the students lip-syncing skills and help start off the music video with an energetic vibe. The transitions between the cuts successfully allowed the audience to follow the narrative whilst also acting as a clear divide between the clips, showing them as the singers separate memories.

I also liked the different filters and framing used throughout the video. For example, the dramatic cold filter used when the singer smells the rose makes the red flower stand out and draws attention to it, and the clip of the boy handing the girl the flower in a close up of their hands conveys intimacy. The video is 50 :50 performance and narrative as there are many clips where the singer is breaking the fourth wall and performing to the camera and audience but there are just as many of her reminiscing on her old memories and enacting a narrative that is an amplification of the song.
