For this task, in groups, we had to make a stop motion animation. We had to choose our characters and props at random, as well as choosing a narrative. My group’s props, Characters and narrative were a Lego car, a flag, a little girl, an octopus and our narrative was lost and found.

  • Does it fulfil the traditional narrative structure?

Yes, the Stop motion starts off with the equilibrium of the girl and octopus laying next to each other. It then has the disruption, which is when the octopus goes for a walk and gets lost. The Disequilibrium/ climax is when the little girl cannot find her friend the octopus, and she begins her search. The revelation is when the girl is driving, and she sees the octopus. The final equilibrium is when she grabs the octopus at the end of the stop motion picture.

  • Do the characters fulfil conventional character types?

Yes, the motion picture follows conventional characters types. The octopus in the video is the damsel, and the little girl is the heroine who’s purpose is the find and rescue the octopus.

  • Are there binary oppositions?

Yes, the binary opposition in our production was Searching and Finding. There is also the binary opposition of loss and discovery.

  • Explain how Music Video narratives can differ from these conventional ideas i.e. are able to play with time and space, are episodic, are anachronic, are thematic and don’t always have an ending so that they are repeatable etc.

A music video can differ from the narratives of a conventional idea because the footage could be added in which the things that are happening pre-date the rest of the footage, but are still relevant to the story being shown in the music video. These may also not have an obvious ending. This allows the video to be made repeatable so that the audience wants to watch it again, as a music video is only a short amount of time to tell a story, so therfore only snippets of a story are shown of at decisive moments.
