Evaluation of Previous Student’s Music Video

Holding a shot steady – Lower Level 3

In this music video, there are various moments of instability which takes away from the overall image of the video, for example, the first few shots of the field are quite shaky but this is not purposeful for effect. However, the remainder of the video there is clear use of a tripod, for example the studio-based performance sections, this allows the viewer to concentrate on the faces of the singers.

Framing a shot – Lower Level 3

There are various examples in this video where interesting and imaginative angles are used, for example when the camera slowly backs out of the door giving a wide-shot. However, the variety is widely limited when throughout the studio-based performance sections, only mid-shots and close-ups are used. It may be arguable that these were done for effect but this makes it lack interest.

Variety of shot distances – Upper Level 2

There is frequent use of a close-up, primarily in the performance sections, however there are not many various other shot distances found in the video. There is some use of mid-shot and the artificial shot at the very end of the airport is good, but there is simply not enough variety of shots.

Appropriate to Task – Lower Level 3

After final production, it does look like a professionally produced product, especially the final shot of the airport, however due to the lack of shot distances and holding a shot unsteady, the professionalism lacks.

Mise-en-scene Selection – Lower Level 4

All of the clothing, hair, and make-up used were appropriate to the narrative of a video game so the mise-en-scene was particularly good. There were also variety in the clothing for each location/character, which made differentiation easy and also more interesting.

Editing for Meaning – Upper Level 3

The narrative was complete by the end of the video, including the results of the ‘game’, the order of events made sense chronologically. The pacing was of high-quality and the continuity was effective.

Shot Transitions – Lower Level 3

The transition at the end of the video into the ‘airport animation’ and ‘results board’ was incredibly smooth and effective to signal the end of the narrative. The edit in most places fit well to the beat of the song however could seem jumpy in places.

Sound with Images – Lower Level 4

The sound is, for the most part, perfectly synced with the video. The lip-syncing is of high-quality and never really slacks. The movement in the ‘performance’ sections were well choreographed with the music however there were minor anomalies here which let down the level slightly.


Detailed Music Video analysis

Here follows two detailed music video analysis’ in the form of essays.

From doing this task I have managed to explore different types of narrative and how each video is properly illustrated to convey certain messages. For example, in ‘Chained to the Rhythm’, various current global-issues, such as the wage gap, are addressed and shown in creative ways. I have gained several ideas of how different key themes and ideas can be shown through a music video and how they can be incorporated into my work.


Music Video Form & Conventions

By analysing these videos, I learned a considerable amount about the relationship between song content and narrative content, but also the narrative conventions.

Firstly, a music video could be illustrative, when the narrative in the video very closely echoes the lyrical content of the song. Secondly, it could be amplified, where the narrative whilst inspired by the song adds a narrative element to complement the themes and subject matter of the song. Or thirdly, disjunct, where the narrative seems to hold very little relationship to the song and is quite arbitrary or random.

There is a performance / narrative scale, describing the ratio between the level of narrative content and performance content in a video:

A performance video is going to be exclusively performance, and the performance in these videos will be given special treatment – they may be performing in an unusual place, have stunning visual effects, be a comic or spectacle performance, this is all done to excite the performance as there is no or little narrative.

A combination video will be a mixture of performance and narrative and can include, the performance and narrative being completely separate, the star/band observes the action as an invisible narrator or the performer could have an active role in the narrative.

A narrative video will have little or no performance, which is quite unusual given music videos nature as an advert for the performers. They may often tell a socially important story (giving a voice to the voiceless), also they may use a complex narrative structure, and may use inter-textual references from films or other stories.

This has given me some alternative ideas on the performance/narrative ratio, and how to illustrate the storyline by incorporating singing into it.


Prelim Montage

The strengths of my video are:

  • The transitions between each of the shot changes are smooth and appropriate.
  • The video matches the brief of showing through a typical schoolday.
  • Most the shots feature different angles and uses of techniques (e.g. whip-pan).

The weaknesses of my video are:

  • The footage is not edited to the beat of the music.
  • The image becomes blurry after drastic change in lighting.

By creating this video, I have learned that the use of and variety of transitions change the way the video is presented. As an example, having a set of transitions which seem to tie time together make the day seem to fly by much quicker and seem more enjoyable than if the shots were longer and without transitions.

Prelim Continuity Task

I have applied a variety of camera angles and shots in order to create a sense of setting and understanding the context of what is happening in the video, such as: a mid-shot, which is to establish the contents of the room (including the actors), a close-up, to capture the actor’s expressions and emotion that they’re feeling in the action, also, it makes them feel as if they’re watching from the other actor’s point of view, match on action is to give the audience a sense of understanding and a different view so it doesn’t get repetitive.

180 degree rule (which is when you make sure that the camera does not go past the line of action amidst the people/things in shot).

In order to create pace, as the conversation begins to get heated I have edited that part to have fast changing shots to and from each actor. In result of this, it makes the audience feel more on edge and tense.

Continuity editing helps to condense time, space and action.

What I have most recently learnt is very important for when I am editing videos; which is continuity editing rules, these rules such as the shot reverse shot and match on action. This rule is to show fluidity and consistency, and most importantly to make sure that the audience doesn’t get confused.
