Textual Analysis of Genre, Star Image and Formal / Technical Conventions of a digipak 🔍

In this task we had to do a textual analysis on a digipak from a band of my genre. đŸŽ” The band we chose was Primus and these photos are the back and front of their digipak.

Conventions 👇

  • Barcode – for shops
  • Band name –  Helps promote the album and help fans identify it’s their album and what to expect.
  • album title – Gives it a identity
  • song names – So you know what you are buying into and maybe some of the song names will intrigue you.
  • Publisher
  • Copy right stuff –  People can’t use your music

The digipak cover is Playful and interesting but at the same time the font at the top is mouldy, grimmy and Rebellious. The colours are dark so the digipak relies more on the interesting image to catch peoples attention. The Brand name and album name are very easily identifiable with the disgusting font. The pig đŸ· burping matches the name of the album ‘Pork Soda’ and it’s meant to be the main eye catching piece and it will make the audience make a double take. This cover promotes the band as quirky and out of the ordinary maybe making some people more interested and you can then kinda get the jist of what the music will be like. The titel ‘pork soda’ makes no sense how can pork be soda. The back is fairly boring so you can really focus on the artists music and the funny, funcky front.

Mission Statement and Marketing Strategy

In this task I had to create a google drive and include various aspects and complete brief notes. These aspects included researching my target audience and competitors. I also had to come up with a USP and a call to action, so what am I actually going to do?? This task will help in the future because it provides a clear outline to what I am going to do and how to sytle my Digipak.

Key improvment points from talking to Specsavers

  • We need to develope a definity ending/conclusion to seal the story and make it easy to follow
  • Need to add Adjustment layers to performance and narrative to make they easier to identify and make them have their own style.
  • Aquire different shots for the performace, more close ups and different shots.
  • Film the prison scene ASAP so we can add it in. Shoot must include shots which use the same angle and postion to link the prison, gambling and opening the envelopes.

Elliot quickly showed us some key premier pro skills which will improve our video. There included how to add a smoother cut between shots and adding adjustment layers changing the colours making the video more unique.

Video narrative/story shots

In this task we had to draw a scene that would be in our narrative performance and annotate the drawing with how we’re going to film it. This includes the different shots and editing styles.

This will help us execute the performance because we won’t be standing around trying to figure out what to do, we’ll be able to go straight into filming because of our planning.

Shoot 2 reflection (Narrative)

Our narrative performance took place in a porter cabin next to the school field. As a group we thought this was the best available place to record our narrative performance. With this we were able to get plenty of shots including close-ups, reaction shots, track shots and pans. The location and set makes it really story really easy for the people watching to understand.

What went well:

  • As a group we all contributed ideas and we all agreed allowing everything to run smoothly
  • We all prepared and all came with something useful to the shoot, this occurred because of our successful planning.
  • We used a variety of shots, for example, low/high angles, close up’s, establishing shot’s, tracking shot’s and pan’s.
  • Everyone contributed.
  • Our Mes en scene for the set was really good

Improvements

  • We were hoping for a better location but it was the only one available that was usable.
  • We wanted the location to be a bit darker.
  • A few more clips of the girl at the establishment would’ve been useful.
  • footage not being so wobbly

When it comes to next time I think we should spread the recording load because Millie did most of it because I was in the narrative. This would be a good idea because all of need to pick up the required skills. We should also give us more time to think about the locations because we don’t want to have to settle for something we aren’t the biggest fans of again.

Narrative development

Narrative development before our second shoot was essential. We had to complete and fill in an Extended Step Outline sheet which required us to explain and put forward our plan when it comes to our narrative section of the music video. As a result of this, it allowed us to easily understand and direct our own music video.

Despite there being a continuous and common use of an Equilibrium, we chose more of an abstract structure to be within our music video.  With a note of key aspects, the common structure and description/planning of our narrative, this sets us up well with creating a successful music video.

Shoot 1 reflection (Performance)

In order to create out music video we had so perform a production shoot, whereby we collected footage to use in our music video. We had to select a location suitable for out genre and the Mes En Scene to go along with it. The performance consisted of lip syncing and rather dull movement. Below are some images from the shoot.

Below is a image taken before the shoot showing off our performers outfit.

What went well:

  • Our planning prior to the shoot was worth while
  • As a group we were able to collect a vast array of shots.
  • The Mes En Scene, that as a group, we came to a decision on was effective and played a substantial part when trying to connote important themes and issues.
  • As a group we worked well together, we all contributed ideas.
  • all our skills allowed us to provide a quality piece.

What needs improving:

  • needed some more interesting shots, funky transitions and pans, tracking shots, ped shots.
  • filming in a public area made it common for people to walk past and disturb recording.
  • Even though the main background is fitting for our song there wasn’t much else around so we struggled to find other places.
  • Could’ve done with more of a variety of shots
