Narrative is the ‘study of stories’. It includes the following:
- The order in which the story is told (structure)
- How the audience is positioned in relation to the narrative.
- The character’s journey. What epiphany do they have?
- The conflict & themes explored and how they are resolved.
- The codes in the text which help the audience understand the story and its messages.
It is crucial to have an equilibrium, a disruption then usually finish on a disequilibrium, this makes the video re watchable and the target audience will be more likely to watch it again.
Here is the simple compilation of or ‘best bits’ and varied, different shots we were able to get during our performance, so there is no music as none of it is meant to be lip synced. This task enabled us to get a variety of different types of shots we have and analyse which shots were useless and unusable due to any issues with aspects such as lighting or there may have been an item in the background that shouldn’t have been there.
Overall I found that we both worked well as a team. Proof is this is for example, if one of us did not like the shot we would both decide what the best shot would be.
What went well:
- Our star image was conventional to our genre. Also we made sure we were paying attention to little details such if she had a hairband on her wrist. We also made sure the makeup was strong and bright in order to portray the fact that she has no fear of standing out or being bold
- The location was good as it helps to show of that idea of a free place and goes with the message of our song.
- The acting was good because even if there was a point where there was something that could be seen as distracting to the performer they kept going with the song.
Targets for next time
- Experimenting with some more technical angles and camera techniques. Although we do have a good variety of shots it would benefit us to use more.
- Be more organised, we would benefit from making a group chat with both me and my group and anyone else who will be apart of the music video; this will make it easier to communicate.
Evaluation of Performance shoot:
- On our shoot, we went to multiple locations; mostly steps within town area as this gave us many options for different angles of shots eg above and below and jump cuts
- We carried equipment together such as the camera, tripod, shot lists, lyric sheets and lighting.
- Whilst setting up shots me and Hollie-Mae both checked that we were happy with how it looked through the camera; for example checking if there wasn’t any wasted space and that it well framed well and in focus.
- We worked well together and our model was very co operative and listened to our advice and even thought of some of her own which was very good.
- Marguerite did her makeup at home before the shoot which was very helpful as it saved time and gave us more time to shoot.
- Half way through we had to get a new battery as our camera wasn’t charged up from the last person who used it; it took up a bit of our time so would be better if we made sure we had a spare fully charged battery.
- We should bring a spare SD card or make sure it has enough space or has a high enough storage to last the whole shoot as when we shot our SD card was very close to running out.
- Getting a clear lip sync of the very beginning of the song was not a strong part of the performance as our performer was getting into the song so whilst editing we could place narrative visuals.
Above is a copy of our risk assessment containing all the relevant signatures. This helps us to highlight all the possible risks we may encounter whilst shooting and how we are able to control them and minimise the possible risk. Doing this helps us to ensure the safety of our performers and ourselves.
In our last lesson, a professional Cinematographer :Lenny Lenfesty, from Specsavers came in to our lesson and gave us feedback on our pitch. Hollie-Mae and I told him our ideas and he advised us by showing us how to edit in post-production using various effects that we were not aware of before the session so this has really elevated our video to the next level.
This advice from a member of the Specsavers Creative Team was incredibly helpful as he taught us many editing skills and techniques that we will use in the making of our video.
We also shared our ideas about the narrative segment of our video with Lenny and he then suggested some ideas to help expand it. So therefore we now have a better idea of how we are going to execute our edit. For example, we mentioned to him that we wanted to portray the outside world as dull and grey then when we portrayed the chaos inside her head as bright and colourful, he loved this idea and showed us how to execute these ideas in post-production.
One of the post-production editing techniques that Lenny showed us was speed duration and blending adjustments when overlapping to layers at one time. This was quite challenging as there is quite a few steps but we are interested in using it for our video. Below is a video tutorial on YouTube that we can reference if we need to.
Above you can see we have make a production meeting agenda for our performance shoot which includes what is happening and who is responsible for what. For example, what our characters are wearing, the props they will use and locations we indeed to use.
Performance Outline: Our main star, Marguerite is a psychotic murderer who has killed her previous boyfriends and this music video is her plotting to kill her current boyfriend: Jordan. this will be shot at Hollie-Mae’s house in order to get shots in the bed and the final scene in the shower.
