Digipak – Previous Students Work

These four images are a previous students work in which I have chosen to annotate and look into more detail because I feel that this piece has a great sense of continuity to it; and stands out due to the images as you can tell there has been a lot of thought into the framing, colour and editing.

The use of camera and Photoshop

Within all four images, they have used a range of camera distances these include: extreme close up, close up, long shot and an extreme long shot. Throughout this digipak the variation is well balanced and pleasing to the eye rather than having four of the same shots as this wouldn’t captivate the audience the same way. On the inside right image, the use of the rule of thirds worked great here as the eye is just of center and because he is looking directly into the camera which is breaking the fourth wall and feels as though he is connecting with the audience which grabs their attention. Also, they have used Photoshop well to bring out the colour of the blue, this colour helps add continuity of the sea theme, within Photoshop they could have brightened the blue of the sea to help the digipak seem more cohesive.

A strong point of this digipak is the front cover. It is excellently Photo shopped to make it look like he’s holding the album title.

Mise-en-scene and meaning

Lighting- highkey lighting that is clear and consistent is used on all these images apart from the back cover where natural lighting has been used in order to give a more relaxed, authentic and natural feel. The fore ground of his silhouette and the background are similar colours so therefore the lighting comes across as quite dull in comparison.

Props- on the inside left image they have still put the head of an acoustic guitar under his hands, this image works well with the indie genre chosen and is conventional to this genre.

Costume- a surreal image is used of the man wearing a suit on the beach, this indicates the genre is indie as it has an outlandish feel about it.

Setting-  here they use a beach as their setting, again, this is a very conventional setting for the genre as it connotes feelings of freedom, sorrow, nostalgia and reflection. The symmetry used within this image is very aesthetically pleasing for the audience and catches their attention, it is very simple yet very effective.

The word choice and level of audience engagement

Firstly the title, they have chosen is ‘Ocean’ and the artist is called ‘seafret’. These link well and have a clear correlation which each other. The images shown on the digipak are of the ocean which helps add continuity and  on it and the pictures shows images of the ocean which relates quite nicely and helps with gaining the predictable pleasure from the audience. On the back of the album you’ll find a list of 7 song names, for example, ‘Wildfire’, ‘Atlantis’, and ‘Oceans’, these chosen songs have the theme of nature in common which fits in perfectly with the indie genre.

The creative use of DTP to integrate images and text and use of colour/ typeface

Simplicity is crucial and highly effective. In this case the typeface shows further continuity and it is important how the same font flows nicely onto the back of the album which brings it together as a whole. The use of colour throughout the album is very impressive and bold, the use of the different shades of blues and greys make the bright, electric blue stand out the most and really entice the audience.

Digipak Conventions Analysis

Above shows an annotated version of Digipak. We decided to go with Rex Orange County’s ‘Apricot Princess’ as he is a very popular artist within the indie pop/electropop genre, therefore we would be able to get a really good understanding of what is considered conventional for our genre. This task helped me gain a better understanding of the key features of a Digipak all come together to grasp your audiences attention. Doing this task will help me when it comes time to produce my own Digipak as I have a better idea of what my target audience is attracted to.

Music Video Draft 4

Here is our draft four of our music video that we have constantly been tweaking and editing to create the best version that we can possibly make. What has changed in this video is that we have finally filled in the blanks so that we have a completed video from start to finish. We have also looked again at the knife shots as we are aware that these needed to be added in order for the narrative to be cohesive and make sense.

Below we have feedback of one of our peers assessing our draft four of what she likes and dislikes about the music video, so we have created a ScreenCastify to capture her discussing her views and opinions of the video.

Targets for Improvement:-

  • a few cliches eg party rings but adds well to the colour scheme of the video
  • colour contrast eg yellow eyeshadow and yellow filter maybe too much? contrast the colours more?
  • lip syncing slightly off, ammend that
  • edit more to the beat so it’s more aesthetically pleasing to the audience
  • you can see people walking past in the reflection of the shower glass shot so cut this out

Production Skills Evaluation 2

  • In order to create a red filter layer to the video you firstly go into Effects Controls and locate the Lumetri Colour setting, after doing this you must adjust the RGB curves to however you wish, for us we decided to choose a red filter as it portrays the character as dangerous and unpredictable. To adjust the hue saturation curves you just need to click on the white circle setting and adjust to preference, this way you can create a hue filter in whatever colour you want. On the other hand, you can use the grid and move the red line in order to adjust the saturation and within our video we upped the saturation three times in order to intensify the colour.

  • Above you can see that for all of the memory flashbacks we decided to use a specific filter to create a retro vibe to the video, to do this we used the filter SL Gold Tobacco (Canon 7D) on all these memory shots. By doing this we were able to determine to the audience that our main female character was having memory flashbacks, it has a sepia, orange toned filter which suggests looking back in time.
  • To get this effect you go into Presets then Lumetri Presets and I personally went into Canon 7D and chose SL Gold Tobacco but there are lots of options depending on what atmosphere you want to create

Music Video Draft 3

  • edit slightly more to the beat
  • ensure all performance is correctly lip synced
  • make sure in the shower scene that the black cuts are all the same length and that we can’t see the models top (crop the video) or people’s reflections in the shower window
  • hold any shots that convey the murder for a few more seconds in order to reinforce the storyline
  • maybe include less of the goggles as they appear a lot but don’t have a lot of relevance

New Storyboard (PMA)

  • Above, we have created a new storyboard for any additional shots we needed , it’s crucial to plan our narrative shoot to ensure it runs smoothly. By doing this it will help give us a clear break down of what the different shots we need to get, meaning that we will not wonder into our narrative shot blindly and this should ensure we gather enough footage and will not struggle when it comes to editing.
  • When creating this storyboard we made sure we paid attention to all the little details we are going to have. For example the first shot is for our narrative is going to be an establishing shot of the mirror, on the mirror we will have an invitation attached to a mirror, even though it is not essential to the narrative it helps give some context.

Having done this task it gave us a good idea of different aspects that we need to consider such as location, makeup, clothing, angles and so on; it has set a clear outline of how we want the shoot to go. Now we have a clear plan to follow and prevent any unnecessary time procrastinating on what to do next.

It’s extremely important to have a variety of different shots in order to keep the audience engaged and involved with the video, if it was all filmed in medium long shots this would become very boring and disinterest the audience very quickly. Close ups allow the emotions of the shots to be prevalent and therefore allows the audience to create a connection with the paradox of the star and these intense close up shots could potentially break the fourth wall. Whereas long shots establish the scene and give the audience a sense of context.

Feedback from Teacher

above is a screencastify review from our teacher, here are some key points she has raised to order for us to improve our product:

  • the start could be edited in slow motion but the intimacy of the shot
  • add more close up shots in order to portray the closer relationship
  • remove prism filter as looks false
  • remove blue bar across 3rd shot as is a mistake
  • the close up goggle shot works well
  • its unclear what in in the back of the car, a link will have to be made, potentially a shot of her crying afterwards so its obvious the boy has been killed
  • fill the last minute with shower shots and a fast paced edit to convey the chaos in her mind
  • more performance shots needed,  stair ones are good not so much the ones on the sofa
  • confusion between if shots are meant to be performance or narrative – clarity needed

Music Video Draft 2 Includes Narrative

  • our models were very co operative and even thought of some ideas themselves and contributed to the shoot
  • the weather was ideal for the shoot and the location worked well
  • we used our time wisely and our production meeting agenda helped us organise our shoot
  • synced up well

  • we filmed even more and repeated shots several times
  • we had a better variety of shots, to improve on this we are going to be conducting more shoots, this will include a white studio room shoot
  • we clarified who our male model, Jordan, is within the narrative as it isn’t very clear

Audience Ideologies

Above is a dating profile for a listener of our artist: Billie Eilish, I collated this information using yougov.co.uk, this is a trustworthy website full of useful information in order to give us the necessary information to find out psychographics and demographics, for example what TV

As producers we have to encode messages and meanings that our target audience can decode, but first, in order to do that we must know and understand our target audience. The best way to do this is by creating a dating profile so we can get into the mindset of our target audience and understand their preferred reading using the information sourced from yougov.gg.

This useful information includes what they watch, what music they listen to etc as seen below in these screenshots of yougov below:
