The Camera Talks

After analyzing the contact sheet I produced, I picked my favorite 9 that showed our own story. I picked these 9 images to show the different angles, depth and exposure. After we created our mood board I analysed each image individually with a technical camera term and some adjectives to convey what the image shows the audience when we look at it.

My favourite of our 9 photos is the top right, this shows us the use of an angled shot but it is also blurred showing our modles edginess and hierarchy. This portrays the fact that and angled shot tells a story within the image.

Altogether, this mood board shows us that all images provide us with a story. I will use this when I come to making my own music magazine, as I will know what to look for when it come to analysing my own images to make sure that my image shows the right story that I need it to for my music magazine.

Print media that communicates meaning

This poster is a perfect way to show us the ways in which a picture can tell us a story about the way a person is trying to communicate with us. By analysing this poster I can know see how font, image, clothing, hair, makeup and information entices the audience to want to find out more about what’s happening in the poster and what’s going to be going on in the future about it. These aspects will help me react out to my audience when I am making my own print designs as I will know how to attract my target audience’s attention.

By looking deeper into this poster it has shown me that every little detail is important to your audience. Ever little thing from the small print website in the bottom left hand corner shows us as the audience that you can feel more engaged with the artist as she wants us to know more about her, to the obvious big bold sci fi print of her tour name to show the importance of it to her and to put it out there to her audience that it will be an ‘out of this world’ performance that the artist will be putting on. Also, the artist is standing in a very bold stance to show that she is confident in what she is going to perform and she is open to new people wanting to communicate with her.

Finally, this is going to help me when I come to do my print design as I will know what aspects I need to include into my print design to engage my target audience and what attracts them to want to look at my magazine.

So, I am a Media prosumer

I am a media prosumers, this means I am involved with the consumption and production of media.

I use media everyday, whether it’s in the form of entertainment, social interaction, personal identity or for information. The images I have included above are some of the media I regularly use. Things like snapchat, facebook, instagram and twitter are medias that I use on a daily bases for social interaction. Blulmer and Katz created a theory called the uses and Gratification Theory which splits media into four different groups, Entertainment/Diversion(E), Social Interactions (SI) Personal Identity(PI) and Information/surveillance (I). Media has a big influence on our everyday lives, without it we would be less connected with everyone around us and less connected with whats going on in the world around us.

This is going to help me with my music magazine as I have realised that you need to use the different Gratification Theory types to entice your audience to keep them connected to you and interested in what you’re about to talk about.

So, hello Media Studies

What are you hoping to learn? What skills do you already have?

I have found out that media comes in four different forms, such as entertainment, social interaction, personal identity and information. In the next two years of studying media studies I am hoping to widen my transferable skills of writing my blog, communication skills and teamwork. Before I started media, I had never written my own blog before, I only did the basic skills of writing a post on facebook or posting a picture on instagram. Throughout my two year course, I will need to use the different technical and transferable skills such as; designing, communication, teamwork and photography. Media studies is also going to help me creatively, when I have to create my own music magazine.

I also hope to pick up the skills such at negotiation, listening and communication through my time in media as I will need these skills all through my adult life. I hope to pick up more skills in editing pictures, filming and photography.

Technical Camera Terms

These are the photos that we took for our mood board. As the photos show we tried experimenting with all different lighting’s, camera angles, distance and composition. We were testing out the different camera angles, shutter speeds, aperture size and testing out the DSLR cameras.

Some of our images that we took were either too dark or over exposed. We changed this by altering the aperture or the depth of field of the camera. As you can see from my images, some of them have the wrong lighting, they are either to over exposed or too dark that you can barely see them. With our partners we tested out the different aspects an image needed to portray a story. For example, the images that are long shots show the theme of loneliness and isolation but the low angle shots show a glimpse of hope and dominance. I will use this when I come to pick my 9 different photos for my mood board as I will now know which ones are the best images to portray communication to my audience and that show the best story.
