The Media Ecology. Map of concepts and mediascape.

In this lesson I learned that every category in the media ecology is essential for the other category’s to work and flow with accordance to the other category’s. This shows that not having one aspect will result in the knock on effect for the rest of the aspects.

For example. The audience is a very important category as without an audience, media would be virtually impossible to even exist as there would be no one one to consume or even prosume it.

To show that every component is essential we’re going to take the category money as an example. Without an audience , institutions producers will be affected because an audience may read, watch, listen, produce and help raise money for them (prosumers).

The Lego model helped me understand the media ecology in a different aspect as the Lego model showed us how the media ecology system works visually and how it is all connected. Our model was based on a residential hotel based in the ocean which is close to an island.

Our example of our ecosystem relates to the Map of concepts as every component in our ecosystem relies on one another for the whole thing to work. For example , our ecosystem works as follows:

  • Money comes in from paying customers at the ticket booth for their boat ride to the island , hotel night stay and return ticket
  • The Boat then Carries that money and the people to the island as well as its stock
  • The other boat already on the island then ships the money and the people back to the hotel where they have a nights stay
  • The Hotel then has supplies to upgrade their appliances which makes the customers come back for another stay
  • Then the boat brings the people back to the ticket booth to return home but are given a free nights stay at the hotel but have to pay to the boat ticket which attracts more tourists(building communities)

When producing my music magazine I will need to think about all the components in the media ecology to obtain the best potential outcome of my magazine. For example , my audience and how I will distribute my media to them, this will affect how my communities are built up with the type of social media that I share.
