Final draft 4

Here is my final draft for our music video to PSYCHO – MASN:Reflection:

What went well:

I really liked the look of the edit, it all flows really well with the music with transitions matching the beat with the performance and lip syncing in time with the music and lyrics.

the color correction and changes with the filters all work and match the vibe and connote what the song is trying to portray through the lyrics and narrative.

the close up shots add variety within the video and allow the viewer to see close up emotions on the performers face

feedback for improvements:

when the artist starts to sing in the audio we need to have the performer in the video singing as well.

use the same color filters when it switches between the clips with and without the filter to give it some consistency and not have different looks through out the clips

keep continuity within the clips.

give a transition between the office and beach otherwise it looks like he just appears at the beach

cut between the long shot up on the rocks to the close up on the sand to shorten the long clips down

cut where the performer is looking at the camera

cut where the performer is smiling

fade out and cut extra space in the clips.

keep continuity within the clips in order to make it flow and use filters later on in the clip

don’t break the 4th wall.

Draft 3 with peer feedback

Here is our draft 3 of our music video:

Feedback:

Positives-
  • Nice variety of locations
  • Good use of different camera angles
  • Editing techniques work well
  • Good narrative and variety of shots
  • Good editing
Improvements-
  • Keep the editing techniques consistent (not too many in one area and spread them throughout video)
  • What is the end goal of the video? Make sure to conclude the narrative to help audience understand
  • Is the random bit of green before and after the words coming up on purpose?
  • Some wobbly shots

What has changed from draft 2?

from draft 2 we have added all of the new shots from out shoot at the beach which finished off the narrative and allowed for the story to flow and make sense

we added some more filters and changed some of the colors of shots in order to add some more verity to the clips

Specsavers feedback

Today Specsavers came into our class and gave us feedback on our videos and to teach us how to use special effects in order to improve the viewing experience of the music video.

Feedback:

  • Make the video narrative and performance flow more in order to give the story more structure and context
  • get more performance shots
  • re shoot unstable shots
  • add in the special effects with the words on the wall moving instead of having them as just a stationary layer over

We also were taught how to use after effects in order to add some movement and more advanced edits to our music video, we used this in order to add the moving writing in the office scene to give the text some life.

Teachers feedback (screencastify)

Summary of feedback:

  • likes the edits
  • change the wobbly shots
  • when someone sings have a connection between the performer with their lips seeing them perform
  • make sure you can see the performers face when performing
  • show the build of work more
  • maybe put the table flip towards the end?
  • show something written on the post it notes
  • povs/ close ups for narrative
  • make throwing the paper in more slow motion  and put the desk flip after throwing the paper.
  • no repeat shots
  • running has to take him somewhere in contrast to the office
  • add effects onto the wall with words floating around

Targets for development:

  • film more close ups of the performance using the face as the focus of the shot, showing the lip sync more clearly
  • use more pov shots and follow what the performer is actually doing with he camera
  • use different cuts and framing to shot the sheer build up of work that the performer is facing within the narrative

Shoot 2 Reflection (Narrative)

Today we went and shot our narrative shoot for our music video. We used a range of locations and a wide range of shots in order to push the narrative to the audience.

What went well?

  • We got the range of shots that we needed using a range of angles
  • We managed to create the office looking space within the studio by adding a table, chair and other office supplies. This gave the impression that we were in an office
  • The lighting used was set up in a way that the camera doesn’t pick up any reflections from the glasses
  • Costume was fitting and worked really well to convey the narrative of the piece

What could we have done better?

  • We could have shot some more footage as we didn’t have enough shots to fill the rest of the music video.
  • We could have used a tripod to film some of the panning shots as they were very shaky
  • We needed to spend more time following the shoot plan as we just ended up shooting what we thought looked good in the moment.

targets for pickup shots:

  • make and follow a shot list
  • get long videos in order to have enough footage to fill empty spots in the edit
  • shoot at the beach as to finish the narrative
  • get shots to link both locations of narrative together

Draft 2 – music video

Past students work that relates to our work:

This music video from a past student relates to our video as its main narrative is about the build-up of work shown with the printouts on the background and how things can get overwhelming.

they lip-synced any performance really well using a lot of different angles to convey the emotion that the lyrics give off.

the costume and overall Mise-en-scene was particularly good and fit with the narrative to create an overall well-rounded professional-looking music video

Here is the second draft of the music video containing the footage from the performance AND narrative shoot.

Self assessments and targets:

What went well?

  1. The clips we got and the MES worked well with the original performance shoot and linked the performance and narrative together
  2. We got a wide range of shots using close ups and POV shots in order to shot the feelings and thoughts conveyed through the narrative by using different angles to express them
  3. The editing to the beat went well as we were able to link the clips together allowing us to use quick jump cuts and transitions in order to time it with the song
  4. we used

Targets/ what we need to do better:

  1.  get more shots to fill empty space
  2. get more close up of performance and lip syncing
  3. do more performance to broaden the ratio of performance to narrative
  4. edit the colors in order to give the clips some more pop and to differentiate the different clips

Video narrative story

  1. the actor is sat at the desk working
  2. the actor is getting frustrated at the amount of work he is having to do, working late hours and being overworked
  3. gets offered a promotion but declines and rips it up

For the narrative shoot we aimed to create a narrative that links to the songs lyrics and to back up the synesthesia felt through the music with impactful meaningful visuals.  We decided to tell a fitting story about the stressful lifestyle of high pressure white collar jobs and how when overworked people can snap and go psycho (which is the name of the song)

We had to factor in lighting, props, costume and camera angles in order to fully capture the lifestyle and imagery we were trying to portray throughout the shoot.

Our narrative revolves around a man who is caught up in the pressures and expectations of work, he works long hours and overtime just to compete and aim for a promotion. however he gets  so caught up in the stresses of his everyday life he has no time to relax and begins to snap. He finally breaks down, declines the promotion and quits his job in order to pursue a life of happiness and not worrying about social perceptions and material monetary  assets and is finally happy.

To create this aesthetic we hired out the white studio and put a desk, chair and office supplies on the desk to create the set where the office will be.  We than dressed our model in a black suit with a white shirt, tie and shoes which is the general attire of a high pressure office job. We than made sure the lighting looked natural and was equally dispersed as we were trying to recreate the lighting of an office which is generally evenly spread and bright throughout.

For camera we used a tripod for stationary shots and pans whereas we used handheld and a tripod with wheels for the moving and rolling shots.

Risk assessment

This is our risk assessment for the narrative shoot of the music video, it is essential to our work as it outlines the does and don’t of each shoot as well as potential hazards and how we will avoid them.

It is useful for our teachers as it gives them a chance to express any concerns about the shoot/ equipment/ location.

Furthermore, it shows here each member of the group will be and at what times in case of emergency or if the teacher wants to check on the shoot’s progress.

The screenshot is of the narrative risk assessment and has been signed off by our teacher.
