Test Shoots

Intro:

our group created a short lip sync video for our test shoot. this allowed us to practice different shots and editing styles to our song before our real shoots.

what went well?

  • Within the test piece the use of different camera angles helped to produce a variety of different angles within the edits allowing us to use different cuts and transitions in our edit
  • the editing and different filters fit with the beat and all changes in angle and shots were edited to the beat with a consistent pace of edit to the beat
  • The contrast between blank facial expressions and dancing produces a conflict of emotions which the lyrics of the song convey. this makes the video relatable to the teenage demographic as they are often conflicted
  • the use of close ups allow the audience to understand the character and get to know them and what they are feeling even when no words are being said

What could be better in the real thing?

  • there could be a wider range of transitions
  • allow for more creativity within the edit
  • allow for jumps between shots angles and heights to add variety to the performance
  • the lip syncing could be a bit more believable

focusing forward within the real music video we will make sure that the star image is clear and that the artist seems extraordinary to the viewers yet ordinary enough for them to relate to the artist. We will use a lot more transitions as we used very little within out test piece. We did however use a variety of shots and angles which helped a lot in giving our piece variety in the edit. We made sure to edit to the beat otherwise the edits would have been random, obnoxious and off-putting

PRELIM TASK MOOD MONTAGE

Today we were tasked with planning, shooting and editing a montage. We had to choose a topic out of a hat at random in which to base our montage off and give us a creative direction to go in.

We chose ‘No man is an island’ which means that sometimes people need help doing things and you can’t do everything by yourself

Our story board:

when shooting our montage we decided to remove the chess scene as it would push our montage way over the set times in which we had to be in.

Our finished montage:

Strengths:

  1.  The transitions and continuity of the montage makes sense to the viewer
  2. The music fits the montage and is in time with the pace of edit
  3. The use of camera within the montage is varied with a wide range of angles from, establishing long shots, close ups, pans, tracking shots and PED

Weaknesses:

  1.  More transitions could be used with in the montage in order to string together the different angles and ‘scenes’
  2.  The use of facial expressions at the end of the montage when the car was fixed could have been a great opportunity for a close up on the facial expressions from within the car. This would have communicated emotion more effectively than the longshot
  3.  A few of the shots are out of focus, this could have been avoided by re watching the clips once filmed in order to check the quality

Summary:

From making this montage I have learnt that I have to add more transitions and allow for more editing to be done within the video. this will allow for transitions and different editing to take place making the video more exiting

I have learnt that For my music video it is easier to make a plan and shoot the transitions which I have planned in order to get high quality transitions in edit, this is done by the use of the story board and having and following the storyboard in the shoot.

This approach to narrative will help within my music video as it allowed me to play with filming and editing styles which help to convey emotion. It also gave me a feel for how it will be to create a narrative and follow it using the story board
