Lip Syncing Exercise

Lip syncing is important to the star image because if they can’t lip sync well then their music videos will look rubbish and no one will take the artist seriously because of how poorly their video looks.  A tip I would give my performer in advanced is to learn the song and know it off by heart so they know what part of the song comes next so the process of lip syncing will be a lot smoother and our time can be used more efficiently.

It is very important to get the actor to look like the voice because if its a man singing a females song then it wouldn’t make sense and the audience wouldn’t actually focus on the lyrics or the video but would be focused on why the voice doesn’t match with the appearance of the actor.

From Wevideo and Premier Pro I have gained some editing skills such as adding in transitions, cutting clips and lining up the video with the audio so the lip syncing looks like it is real.  I have also learnt what Markers are and how they help when editing, you can mark a part of a clip if you know that where someone starts to sing or the song starts to help line up the audio and the video together.

If I were to do this again I would add more and have a longer video, I would also add transitions that fit with the song and I would make use of the green screen and put and effect on it to change the setting of the video to give the audience more entertainment and enjoyment out of the video.

Initial song ideas for a video – Mini pitch

The song I have chose for my pitch is “Before You Go’ by Lewis Capldi who is a fairly new artist.  The reason I have chosen this song is because during the song it comes to life and naturally gets the audience exited and involved.  This song is about suicide and is a very personal song that Capldi wrote because his nan took her own life so he wrote it in dedication of her during the hard times him and his family were going thorugh.

Before you Go:

I fell by the wayside like everyone else
I hate you, I hate you, I hate you but I was just kidding myself
Our every moment, I start to replace
‘Cause now that they’re gone, all I hear are the words that I needed to sayWhen you hurt under the surface
Like troubled water running cold
Well, time can heal but this won’tSo, before you go
Was there something I could’ve said
To make your heart beat better?
If only I’d have known you had a storm to weather
So, before you go
Was there something I could’ve said
To make it all stop hurting?
It kills me how your mind can make you feel so worthless
So, before you goWas never the right time, whenever you called
Went little by little by little until there was nothing at all
Our every moment, I start to replay
But all I can think about is seeing that look on your faceWhen you hurt under the surface
Like troubled water running cold
Well, time can heal but this won’tSo, before you go
Was there something I could’ve said
To make your heart beat better?
If only I’d have known you had a storm to weather
So, before you go
Was there something I could’ve said
To make it all stop hurting?
It kills me how your mind can make you feel so worthless
So, before you goWould we be better off by now
If I’d have let my walls come down?
Maybe, I guess we’ll never know
You know, you knowBefore you go
Was there something I could’ve said
To make your heart beat better?
If only I’d have known you had a storm to weather
So, before you go
Was there something I could’ve said
To make it all stop hurting?
It kills me how your mind can make you feel so worthless
So, before you go
The story is about a person who lost someone very close to them and how it affected everyone around that one person.  e see how the family and friends go through the hard times and try to fill the hole that the person had left.
Performance:
The performance is the artist singing so the artist won’t be in the video a lot because the narrative will be what I want the audience to focus on.  It will be 60% narrative and 40% performance.  I will try to film as much as possible in the time available that we are given and then if I need to film anymore cuts then I will in my spare time.  I will film at the old golf shop at St. Pierre Park because it isn’t used anymore and I could get some good shots in there.

Favourite Music Video from Former Student

I like this music video from a former A-Level Media student because the editing is done very well and you don’t get bored of one shot because the cuts are constantly changing, however you still have enough time to see the emotion on the singers face.  I also like this video because if you haven’t seen the original video you would still know what the song is about by watching this video, I also like the artist and the song.

I also like this music video due to the fact that there is narrative and performance in the video, there is more performance then narrative but the balance work very well for this particular music video.  This video is very engaging and doesn’t make you want to click off because it is an interesting yet effective video to watch and listen to.

The star has been represented as a vulnerable man who has been hurt form a previous relationship and is trying to deal with the pain that has been left with him.  The star has also been represented as a humble man who knows something has gone wrong in the past with his loved one.  The video has been styled and designed to make the audience want to keep watching and listening due to all the emotion that the actor in the video shows on his facial expressions.

Detailed Music Video analysis

This music video is about how everyone is just repeating everything and how everyone cares how many likes they get on posts and that people don’t see the real world anymore.

This music video is about suicide and how the topic can affect and completely change the lives of close family members and friends.  Love is also a topic in this music video and it is portrayed through two adults experiencing the death of a loved one together.

Focusing forward has helped me to understand what my music video should be like and how to draw the audience in and keep them watching, I have also understood that the video is aimed to make money for the artist or band and to make them more known.

Music Video Form & Conventions

I have understood that the main reason for the music video is to promote the song, band or artist and to make them money.  The music video is another chance to see the star and to become more involved with them as an ordinary person who faces everyday life problems, such as relationships and how the world actually is.  This will help me when creating my music video because I will now know to include my artist who is lip syncing in the video to promote them as an artist.

I have learnt that music videos can be:

  • Illustrative– The narrative in the video is very closely echoes the lyrics and music.
  • Amplification– The narrative whilst inspired by the songs adds a new elements to complement the song.
  • Disjuncture– The narrative seem to hold very little relationship to the song and seems quite random.

Prelim Task Mood Montage

In a group of three, we have been asked to create a story board for a montage that we will be making which will last no more than 40-60 seconds that will convey the:

  • Ideas
  • Issues
  • Themes
  • Moods
  • Emotions

Which are suggested within the brief.  Our theme is ‘the best things in life are free’.  We are hoping that the montage will be happy and fun.

In my opinion my montage has an impact on the audience because it makes them smile and think about all the best things in life and when watching the montage you do get a sense of feeling and some sort of connection to the montage and understand the story behind it.

At 0:03 there is a cut to a close up from behind someone to show that there is a purpose for the other person running because he was running to give his friend a hug.  In this montage there is a sense of progression when more an more people are added to the cuts to show more people joining in of the best things in life but also we are trying to reflect an experience of people saying hello and goodbye and seeing all the best things in life that makes people smile and enjoy life.

There are repetition of shots in this montage (close up) to show emotion and meaning on the characters facial expressions.  Additional further shots I would liked to of had in the montage is an extreme close up on the group of people laughing to make sure the audience know that that cut is about laughing.

Focus forward has helped me in basic editing and how to add clips and edit cuts together to create the montage, this will help me in my future projects such as my music video when I will need to be able to add clips together.
