Digi-pack Photo Mock-up

Below is a mock-up digipack for my band. For this I have looked at my mood boards and pintrest to find images which fit with my genre and go well with what we would like.

This is what we came up with:

We liked these images as it had a good mix of people, faces and emotions and explained out genre. With our actual digipack we would like to use more pastel like colours as they go better with our genre however for this one we concentrated more on the shapes ect.

I found our front cover effective as it used numerous shapes and it was abit different. Also I liked the way the face was placed in the middle of the shape. This goes well with the Indie pop genre as they don’t always use the artist on the front and if they do it is slightly different and edgy, therefore this was effective as this had the right ratio of person to background. Additionally, with the front we have not clarified if this will be our album however we split up the word and placed them on opposite sides where the last letter of one word runs on to the first letter of the other. With the name of our artist in the bottom left to make people aware of who the person was. We have not decided if we will change this to a band name or not yet.

Next for the first inside left we have the idea of the guy (Jordan) to be looking at the next page as it will make the audiences eyes follow the page to where the CD would be. The photo we have is effective and has given people as well as ourselves ideas of the image we are wanting to use, anyhow we want to include a photo that draws attention to our  CD using the eye line of our star. Shown within out moodboards we have imaged using coloured smoke or flares if this is possible however we will go more into this.

Following on, the inside right is using the patterns shown in our moodboard. It is not as clearly shown due to the printer not printing it as clearly. Within the background image there are small squares within it showing an edgy type look. We also bonded with the idea of a the dress with no head or legs as we found it effective and different. We have an idea to do this and put it in a background which we can create.

Finally the back page, is an artistc image of a drum kit. For this we intended to either draw and paint, or photoshop it using alot more pastel colours. We decided this was the best for out back page as we had already used photos of people and this was just different to the others, it also represented our band. We have made the songs clear and bold on the top personally I think we could’ve either made the drums bigger or the words of the titles bigger.

After creating the digi pack mock-up we went round asking peers outside of media studies what genre and adjective best descried our digi pack, and these were the results we got:

  • Folk – 0
  • R&B – 0
  • Country Western – 0
  • Indie Folk – 6
  • Indie pop – 9
  • Rock – 2
  • Pop – 0
  • Jazz – 1
  • Reggae – 0

This was successful as majority did go for Indie pop which was correct. The second top was Indie folk which we were knew we were still on the right track with the Indie theme.

  • Rebellious – 2
  • Fun – 3
  • Mysterious – 4
  • Young – 6
  • Deviant  – 0
  • Fresh – 0
  • Urban – 8
  • Folky – 4
  • Romantic – 0

This was alot more spread out to the genre’s, we wanted to go for young, urban and fun, therefore this was mostly successful however we did not have as many people choosing fun, with the hope of following our idea of going more pastel colours this will liven up our digipack more.

Digipack Moodboard

Here I have done a presentation of some images which we are inspired by for our digpack, this contained images with illusions, pastel like colours and things which stand out for how they’re different and artistic. On the second page I have looked through different fonts finding out that I like big clear bold fonts. The sans serif was effective and something  I found was clear and readable.

(Flick through to find fonts)

Below is moodboard of which we made our of different items found in the classroom. This task enabled us to use our imagination of what we want for our digipack. We were considering things such as; Colours, way to present it and shapes we would use. We found that we like the bright colours on top of a duller background, however we also liked the idea of using pastel colours on top of the brighter/duller background colours. We bonded with the idea of cutting up images and putting them back together with spaces this was inspired by the way we placed the tissue paper as they look similar to a jigsaw puzzle. Similarly we used it in the bottom right with the women in head phones, the way it has been cut makes her look bolder and more edgy effect. Additionally, we included a dead rose as it symbolised how love is there and with indie pop having a mysterious edge to it we thought it was relevant. We used alot of blues as we liked the thought of water to do something with our digipack as water can resemblance numerous things. The aquatic symbolisation suggests the symbolism for change as it is forever flowing and can take any course. In our case the indie pop genre has the mystery behind it and the water symbolises that.

This has enabled to have a clearer idea of what we would like our digi pack will look like such as the, colours, shapes and presentation of it all.

Finally we also used alot of pintrest for inspiration and ideas. being able to create a moodbaord on pintrest it has also allowed me to get more ideas of what to do with the deigns.

Digi Pack Previous Students Work

For my previous students work I have analysed Imagine Dragons by two students. This was an effective digi pack as it followed a clear theme and gave a clear understanding of the music video, it stuck out against the others as it followed one another and works well.

Here is the digi pack I chose to analyse:

I have analysed the digi pack under the titles of :

The use of camera and Photoshop to take and engage manipulating images:

Firstly this was a highlight to the music video as it brought the images alive. They have sued various different shots such as close ups and  medium long shots, this allowed you to look at the images and see them at another angle. With the two images of the car they were positioned effectively with the inside right uncovering a wheel when the CD is taken out. This is effective as it continues the theme of this red car.  Additionally the back cover image shows good use of camera, due to the positioning of the car as you can see the car, cliff as well as the chair to create meaning.

The use of photoshop has been effective mostly on the front cover as they have added this to keep this red flowing as red can symbol different things such as love anger ect. They have used photoshop to also make the image darker illustrating the red in a more negative way however makes in contrast with the other pages as they are more lighter.

I would give this a higher up level 3 as they had some strong and effective areas however they could improve it.

The selection of mise-en-scene in the photos and the photos and the meaning it communicates:

Mise-en-scene has been carefully thought about within this piece of work to give it a powerful meaning. The thought of lighting is a clear factor. The front cover displays a dark lighting signifying a dark mysterious and a more negative mood. However the front cover juxtaposes with the other covers as they show a well lit images implying a more energetic scenery. As this is effective it also leaves viewers questioning whether it is meant to give off the confused setting or is a mistake made this generates a confused sense of meaning as it could go either way.

Effectively they have used their props (car) effectively to represent the message their trying to get across with the red. However after watching their music video the red car was symbolic in the video to portray the message of love. With the car being used in the music video it has become too repetitive and has lead to the music video and digi pack not have clear individual meanings. Unfortunately this lead to it not being as interesting and engaging. If I hadn’t of seen the music video before I had seen the music video this would’ve been a very effective digipack.

I would give this a higher level 3. Due to the effectiveness of the car and the continuity throughout, however the car had already been used in the music video and due to this it let it down.

The choice of words that talk to and engage a specific audience:

On the back cover of this digi pack there is a list of the songs which the artist covers. There is a photo of an empty car on a empty cliff with an empty bench in the background, this is then backed up with the titles of the songs. For example some of the songs titles include;I don’t know why, Start Over, Yesterday, and Ill make it up to you. These names go with the ideas contrasted by the images on the digi pack as there is an empty car and it allows the audience to get a picture of the type of music this may include.

Words on a digipack engage you and give the audience a clear idea of what the digipack is about, it also gives you an idea of the genre.

I would give this area a lower level 4 as the words/ song names were effective and began to give you a feel of the genre it would’ve been.

The creative use of DTP to integrate images and text and use colour / typeface :

There has been a successful use of the continuity of the colour red within all of different sides, the red has also got a positive reflection of grey making it more successful. Additionally the typeface for the main title is effective and edgy however clashes with the genre and how it flows with the other sides of the digipack. Even though the title is extremely effective and it is clear and readable to the audience it just doesn’t fit the genre.

I would give this section a lower level 3 as the images were effective and the colours used were effective however the front page did not coincide with the rest of the digipack as the font title was too different and the colours were too bold with the other sides.

Draft 5 final copy Music Video

Here is my final completed copy of my music video. I thought this was a very productive task and feel like we have made big improvements on the way.

Listening to feedback from our peers we took it on board and improved our music video from it.

Additionally after draft 4 we sent our music video to our peers and they gave us some points to improve on we took on alot and improved as much as we could within the week to finish our music video. This time round we had a lot more positive feedback than negative which was a bonus for us however we still fixed it up more.

Positives:

  • mise en scene
  • transitions for intro
  • lip syncing
  • Shot reverted shots
  • Framing of shots
  • Clear Narrative
  • Colour of clothing
  • Slowed down edit with music
  • The use of repeating Seb walking along beach with girl and on own
  • Red symbolises love

Improvements

  • water fall shot
  • try and keep to the beat
  • More effects
  • Make sure shots make sense
  • Clearer they have broken up (hands split ect)

This feedback was useful in improving to make our final video

Digi pack Conventions Analysis

To begin our digi pack we looked at other artists albums for ideas. We have used Sam Smith in the past as he is similar to our genre and our genre is very new out and does not have the options to analyse. Analysing Sam Smiths album cover it gives us ideas for ours also it allows us to get a brief idea of what will need to be included and what some good ways are to present it.

Music video draft 4

Here is my draft 4 of my music video. I still have some small changes to make my final video. We plan to do one more small shoot just at school to get some more steady footage to finish off our final gaps. Shots such as close ups of the hands being torn away, this symbolises the break up and connotes the lost of love.

Targets:

  • Add more transitions
  • Make sure all clips make sense and are in the correct places
  • Fill in empty gaps

I feel like their has been a big improvement and not much needed to finish this off.

Shoot Reflection

Here are some photos of our performance shoot.

We did our performance shoot at the Cow’s Horn with our actors being Jordan, Lottie and Olivia. We had 3 hours to do the shoot with an additional 45 minutes to set up the equipment.

Our performance shoot was successful after about an hour in as our main performer Jordan became more confident and could remember all the lyrics so he didn’t have to worry about forgetting it, leading him to move more and get more into the song.  The mise en scene was great we had a great location as it had a very vast variety of heights allowing us to do different shots from different heights ans angles. Also the performers didn’t look out of place as they were dressed appropriately for the location.

Targets From Shoot:

  • Make sure we were dressed more appropriate as it was cold
  • Make sure we sing along with performer from the start to make the performer more comfortable and help him with the words.

Music video draft 3

This is now our third draft of our music video, gaining a lot of footage from our recent shoot we have added more to the music video in hope we wont need much more. We have filled up alot of the gaps where we had written on to fill in. This was helpful as when we came to the shoot we already had a clear idea of the shots we wanted to go into these gaps, this made our shoot flow alot quicker and was efficient.

Changes :

  • Added in the most recent footage
  • More transitions including starting to use colour changing transitions
  • re-ordered the narrative to make it make more sense

To gain some feedback on how to improve our music video other than asking just our teacher we gave our video to a few students also doing media studies in the other classes so they could give us some more productive feedback for our music videos. Here was some of our feedback:

From the feedback of this draft we created some targets which we would like to improve for our next draft:

  • Speed up the cutting speeds of the music video
  • more reaction shots
  • more shots reverse shots
  • Try and make the shots make sense for example why is their water shots ?

I will take these on board to improve to the next drafts, I found that there was alot more shots from the last draft and we have moved on alot hopefully this will lead to the next draft being easier to improve as we have made alot on this one.

Music video Draft 2 (includes narrative)

Here is the draft 2 of my music video which includes performance and narrative. We have begun to add clips in places however we still do have a lot of work to do to perfect it. We have slowly started to add transitions. We also need to make the story make more sense to do this we will need to begin to move the clips around to begin to tell the relationship/ argument in this music video of which we vision. To help us with another shoot we will do we have begun to add text in the gaps where we believe certain clips should be.

Improvements :

  • Start to add more transitions
  • More reaction shots of the second guy
  • Have less of the drummer as she inst enthusiastic enough
  • Start to fill in the gaps needed
  • Make the jealousy of Jordan clearer
  • Make the audience establish what is going on between the two different guys more

Teachers improvements:

  • Start to re-organise the order to make it make more sense ( all beach ones, then all golf ones)
  • As well as transitions maybe adjust the lightening within premier

Audience Ideologies

My song ‘One’ by Saint PHNX follows the genre of pop. Looking into my artists on you.gov they are not an option so looking into similar artists such as Sam Smith I was able to collaborate information to find my target audience. Within my group we have discussed who are focus is and how they’re democratic as well as political views.

This task was useful as we were able to find out our target audience and the age for our target audience is 18-24 and mainly female. This was useful when making my music video because I had a target audience to aim towards and I will know my interests.
