class analysis of how well pan’s fits the fanatsy genra

similarities

  1. The main character is given tasks to complete in order to achieve a goal

2.mystical creatures like the faun or faeries and the pale man

3. A strong villain that controls an evil army

4.a naive main character that is unsure how to navigate there journey with out help from a wise assistant

5.”magic” like how the mandrake in milk starts to heal Ofelias mother

diffrences

1.there is allot of war iconography and narative no common in fantasy films

2.the mentor faun chracters is untrustworthy

3.there are brutal torture scenes not usually common in jaunty fantasy films

4.the civil war as a historical event in the film being portrayed is uncommon in fantasy films (made up universe real world events)

Del toro clearly had allot of fun with mixing up the genres in this film, experimenting with fresh versions of old characters within a enthralling story. I believe that del toro mixed everything up on account of the fact films typically get made the same way until that genera dies and becomes post modern, the way del toro has mixed in elements of other films throughout means a similar film would be incredibly difficult to make and i find it hard to believe that enough films similar to this could be made to over saturate the genre witch is why pans labyrinth continues to be new and interesting.

the warm elements mixing with the fantasy give amazing opportunities to cut away at opportune moments to give incredible juxtaposing moments that keep one story from getting stale.
