editing textual analysis

This is a montage from Edgar Writes Hot fuzz, this is a montage of the main character moving out the city to a small village, this montage has repetitive themes such as the light up sign of a take featuring twice throughout and repeatedly featuring a shot of his telephone losing more and more signal to straight him leaving the city. The editing is quick each clip not more than 3 seconds but as each clip changes the conatcnt throughout is Nicolas angel (our star) and his plant probably trying to straight his permanence after the move after al no one brings a house plant on a week holiday to the north of England.

Super hero analysis

Batman averts the standerd hero archetype as unlike most other superheros who are spangled in bright colors and charismatic faces while demonstrating  heroic attributes for the press or some form of media, or at least that’s what the classic hero archetype would suggest, batman however is a dark brooding character who hides from the media or authority. He has no super powers and relies purely on his skill wallet and how intimidating he is as a figure instead, he also mentally has different ideology than most heros constantly questioning himself and the things he does witch is starkly different to most heroes who are rather self obsessed and arrogant outside there standerd job.

batman context and critical reception

A commonly held idea about the dark night is that is that its meant to reflect a bush america, eg post 9/11 and the war on terror. For instance we have been presented with a villain that isn’t afraid of death and that doesnt want money or power but only to cause chaos, much like the terrorists that committed the 9/11 atrocities .

after 9/11 the patriot act was brought  in this was used to tap phones look at online data ect, batman does something drastically similar with Lucius Fox, where in he hacks hundreds if not thousands of mobile phones and uses it like sonar to see through walls, like the american government batman hacked the general public’s phones because he felt it necessary.

extraordinary rendition is something the american government did so to prosecute terrorists,  it is the act of taking someone out of there country into another so to punish them and was used fairly regularly during the war on terror  and batman does it in the dark night. when one of the gangsters flees to Hong Kong batman essentially kidnaps him and brigns him back to america so that he can be prosecuted by an american jury.

The Americans where also on multiple occasions accused of torturing prisoners and suspected terrorists in an effort to get them to talk batman uses a similar technique when trying to interrogate the joker.

Genra analysis pans labrynth

class analysis of how well pan’s fits the fanatsy genra

similarities

  1. The main character is given tasks to complete in order to achieve a goal

2.mystical creatures like the faun or faeries and the pale man

3. A strong villain that controls an evil army

4.a naive main character that is unsure how to navigate there journey with out help from a wise assistant

5.”magic” like how the mandrake in milk starts to heal Ofelias mother

diffrences

1.there is allot of war iconography and narative no common in fantasy films

2.the mentor faun chracters is untrustworthy

3.there are brutal torture scenes not usually common in jaunty fantasy films

4.the civil war as a historical event in the film being portrayed is uncommon in fantasy films (made up universe real world events)

Del toro clearly had allot of fun with mixing up the genres in this film, experimenting with fresh versions of old characters within a enthralling story. I believe that del toro mixed everything up on account of the fact films typically get made the same way until that genera dies and becomes post modern, the way del toro has mixed in elements of other films throughout means a similar film would be incredibly difficult to make and i find it hard to believe that enough films similar to this could be made to over saturate the genre witch is why pans labyrinth continues to be new and interesting.

the warm elements mixing with the fantasy give amazing opportunities to cut away at opportune moments to give incredible juxtaposing moments that keep one story from getting stale.

mise-en-scene

mise en scene is a french term that refers to that everything gin the scene has some meaning to influence the scene i was asked to look at the two sisters and the preist, these characters are meant to be high class individuals of spain that support the fascist nation. These characters are there. In this scene all of characters are wearing dark and drab cloaths (browns and blacks) this may represent death or how a classic villain archetype is to wear black and dark colours, this also allows said characters to blend into the background this is probably because they are not incredibly important characters not affecting the plot all that mutch and acting only for exposure for the plot.. This is the movie not so subtlety telling the audience that these arnt nice people and this is clearly supported by the subtext of there lines. They act quite statically not moving much and less expression in there face speaking with very dry tones this is again most likely due to the fact there not important this means more attention is being portrayed to the captian the lighting also heavily hints at this witch the preist and the isters only expirencing warm light over there head witch makes them seem allot less powerfull than the captain whos pictured with a roraing fire behind him. These factors all together clearly show the relationships between these charatcers quite clearly and show the audience very clearly whos incharge.

film poster

As well as the iconography the narrative taking place clearly indicates both a battle happening on the beach bellow reminiscent of a classic war film, the fight on the beach between two rivil armies aided by tanks that could be firing at soldiers or at the fighter planes in the air fighting each other  but also the dogfight in the air come firms to us that this is a war film.
