A New Improved DPS

What’s new:

  • Adding a bright banner with lyrics and quotes.
  • The orange of the banner matched the text and neon aesthetic.
  • I have added a byline and credit to the photographer to make clear how the article was made.

What’s next:

  • Making the quotation stand out by changing the typeface.
  • Focus on the lines on the orange banner I have added and make sure they are all the same colour and opacity.

Feedback & Reflection on Draft DPS

Reflecting on my First Draft of my Double Page Spread I have received feedback.

Feedback from my peers include :

  • Add lyrics
  • Add more graphic design
  • Make the typeface for the questions clearer

Feedback from my teacher included :

  • Adding a banner with a bright colour to go alongside the text
  • Add Quotes
  • Add by lines

Targets for development:

I have already added features such as changing the opacity of a banner and making mini pictures in a Polaroid form to give an insight to Amy’s personality. I also added different typefaces and sizes and spacing to make the text stand out easily on the page.

My next step is taking on board these comments by adding a banner and making sure all necessary features are there such as page numbers.  I will also add more exciting quotes and lyrics to make the article more personal and exciting.

This is the first draft of my double page spread. I am happy at this stage as I have all the necessary features and have some eye catching ideas which goes with the aesthetic of my page. However there are still improvements that can be added.

Second Shoot Contact Sheet

Here are my contact sheets from my latest shoot:

My 6 Strong Images :

So far I have met the aims stated in my stated in my production meeting as I have achieved a range of different images from high angles to mid shots. I also feel that they provide a narrative as the outfits provide a stylish vibe and the props helped to implement a story into my images. This all helped follow my genre of pop music.

The day went well despite the weather. We managed to time when to do our shoot throughout hail and heavy rainfall. We found some secretive and exciting spots and provided some adventures shoots. Next time I would make sure that my settings are right from that start as we struggled with some brightness issues at first.

A New Improved Feature Article

Previous Draft :

New Draft:

The changes I have made are making sure that the punctuation and sentence structures are correct. I have made the article more about Amy and included more interesting, new information and gossip to give the reader a new insight to her life. I have also made sure all the information is correct for example using UK singers instead of US singers, as she arrived in the UK.

I hope that the impact of these changes will bring a more exciting article for my target audience, it hopefully looks more presentable as there are better sentence structures.

My targets are to make sure everything can be clearly shown on my double page spread and that more gossip can be added.

Draft Feature Article

I drafted my double-page spread. Here is a voice recording of my first article :

I reflected on my voice recording and provided myself with some targets for my next draft:

  • Make sure punctuation are in the correct places.
  • Changing some words to fit the sentence better.
  • Check over the structure of my sentences.

Reflecting on these targets, I have created my second draft of my article.

My teacher provided me with the target to add more detail and juicy gossip, so that the readers feel they are learning something new. Which I will now develop as my draft 3.

Production Meeting Agenda For 2nd Photo Shoot and Risk Assessment

I have focused on preparing for my upcoming shoot for my music magazine. This includes my plan presenting the time of my shoot, my model’s outfits, who is responsible and the location.

My aims for location shoot 2 are to achieve a range of different images that provide a narrative of a stylish, trendy, eyecatching girl who stands out and also following my genre of pop music to represent a young, carefree vibe.

Other props I may include: Pink Lilo, Flower, Bag and Drink

My shoot is outside of school and so, therefore, I have provided a risk assessment which conveys the further actions I can take to reduce risks happening.

Language Analysis

In the article Cash For Questions released 11 July focusing on the band ALT-J written by paul stokes and photographs by Adam Lawrence. The article is based on a Q&A. There is a presence of journalism as the article expresses new news towards and audience and their thoughts and feelings. The impact draws in the reader by displaying new gossip. It is written in first person as the questions are being answered by members of ALT-J and their experiences which will make the audience feel involved and part of the action. I don’t believe that much of awareness of the journalist presence it is more the about the band and there answer towards question. The introduction does show some aspects of journalism when introducing the band. There is a clear introduction; however, there is not a clear conclusion as it finishes with answers to questions.

The sort of words used are informal, with more of a conversational tone as if talking to friends. Words such as “busted”, “stupid” and “dude” which connotates a chill, laid back vibe. It fits there genre as a rock band as they are very carefree. The metaphor “It was all a bit of whirlwind after[the Awards]” conveys how quickly their experiences within the band went from their joyful experience. The quotation “I copied my friend’s homework and denied it. It was a shitty thing to do.” this suggests that they are very vulnerable and obedient as this is the worst thing that they thought they did at school denoting their nerdy side. The readers will experience an evolvement within ALT-J and their life experiences, which will make them feel part of the magazine.

The journalist represents the band as laid back,  nerdy, storytelling people who seem easily approachable. Through the question and answers, it provides information into their lives and them being ordinary through their copying homework at school to being extraordinary and achieving awards. The interview seems very laid back and open through their writing.

Design Skills 1

New design skills I have learnt are how to flip, add graphics patterns, liquify backgrounds, add stoke and find specific typefaces that fit my drama.

What went well was the colours all fit together and are easy to read; the stroke adds some weight which helps make certain information stands out better on the page.

Screenshots of Tools :

The Hand Tool helped me within my magazine to blur, smudge and sharpen my image. I used the sharpen tool to enhance details in my picture and give a crisper image. This helped me convey the fun, lively, young pop teen. This tool particularly helped make the outfit very eye catching through colour and makeup.

The spot healing tool to clone areas of my picture and blend pixels in the targeted area. This makes a face more clear and blemish-free cover.

The Liquify tool on Photoshop helped create my background. I used an image of my orange dress the model had on and played with the contrast, colour and vibrancy. The liquify tool let me push, pull, rotate and reflect areas of the image. This helped make a subtle background full of colour. This provided a sweet, flowy and vulnerable look to the cover.

On Indesign, I used the polygon frame tool to create texture and pattern to my magazine. I used yellow and orange colours to add a sweet and playful side to the image, they decode happiness and joy.

The meanings I tried to encode was an energetic, friendly and young vibe. Her bright colours and award adds excitement to the page.
