Prelim Task Lip Syncing Exercise

What went well-

  • I think that considering it was our first time lip syncing we did okay.
  • I think I did okay at syncing the music up with the video through premier.
  • I am getting used to working with Premier.

What didn’t go so well-

  • I think with out performing we need to be more confident.
  • Learn which camera angles suit best.
  • Be more confident using Premier.
  • More variety- change between the two scenes more often.
  • Singer needs to more clearly mouth the words.

Favourite Music Video from Former Student

I like this music video because I think their is a clear narrative through the video, I think the star image is communicated well, the star is always made to look glamorous and always portrays confidence. The star lip sync in time with the music perfectly so it has been well edited. The rhythm of the cutting speed matches the rhythm of the song this makes the music video flow with the song. I thought the overall acting of the music video worked well and was portrayed well by the stars. There was a good use of performance as well as a narrative. I think overall this music video was very successful as it portrayed a good narrative and star image.

Detailed Music Video analysis

I closely analysed two music videos. The two music videos I closely analysed was Rihanna- We found love ft. Calvin Harris and Mahalia – What You Did (feat. Ella Mai).

This task has taught me how music videos can vary and how each element of a music video creates an effect and is so important. I have also learnt how important star image is throughout these videos.

Music Video Form & Conventions

This is what I have learnt about music video form and conventions.

The relationship between the song and the narrative

This can be conveyed in three ways illustration, amplification and disjuncture.

Illustration- The narrative in the video very closely echoes the lyrics and the music.

Amplification- The narrative whilst inspired by the song adds a new element to compliment the song.

Disjuncture- The narrative seems to hold very little relationship to the song and seems quite random.

I have also learnt that the star image and MES is very important in music videos.

Prelim Task Mood Montage

Story Board

This is the story board for my montage.

However, we had to change our montage as we didn’t have the props available to create it. We changed our montage to covey the feeling of being lost.

  • Do you think your montage has an impact?

I think my montage has an impact, it clearly conveys the impact of confusion and of being lost. It makes the audience feel stressed as they can tell that the model looks distressed and confused.

  • Do you get a sense of feeling or story / relationship?

My model is constantly looking lost and confused, she is rushed and looking for a clear sign of direction. It reflects to the audience a clear feeling of being lost and confused.

  • How does one specified cuts create meaning?

At 0.16 my model looks at her watch, this conveys she is time restricted and is under pressure or running late.

  • Is there a sense of progression or are you trying just to reflect an experience?

My model is conveying the experience of being lost, this is apparent through her confusion and disorientation of looking for directions.

  • Do you use repetition of some shots? If so, how do they help communicate your idea?

I used similar shots of her feet repeated, this conveyed the idea of walking everywhere, to try find where to go.

  • What additional shot would you have liked to get to further communicate the idea?

An additional shot I would like to include would be a shot of my model finding where to go, this would further convey the idea that she was lost but has now found her way. I could have repeated the feet shots to reinforce the idea that she is travelling.
