After we completed our dummy mash-up section we were able to combine all the different genres to form a full music video. This video and task has been helpful to me as I can now see how important the creation and representation of the star image to the appropriate genre is as well as how much different genres vary with each other so it is important to convey the correct conventions. We have now completed our “pop girl group” dummy mash-up of “Can’t Stop the Feeling” by Justin Timberlake, this section is now ready to be edited together with the other genre music videos for the rest of the song to create the full dummy mash-up. This has allowed me to see how important yet easy it is to identify and adhere to genre conventions for music videos in order to correctly construct the star image and mise-en-scene. In order to visualise how we would construct our perfect girl group music video we drew inspiration from other videos through the years and chose our favourite shots, from this we will attempt to accurately recreate these with our own twists for the purpose of following the correct conventions for our music video section. We decided to delegate responsibility for the production of our dummy mash-up music video by producing an agenda of a meeting we had, this ensures nothing will be forgotten on the day since everything is accounted for. Below is our document where we have decided whom will film which section and where and when our film shoot shall occur.
To further solidify my understanding of the conventions between music videos and genre I explored how the star image of a girl band is represented, to do this I found many pictures of girl groups both performing and posing advertising and attributed adjectives to each of them to get a general idea of what themes and connotations are attested to the genre, these include elements such as paradox of the star which show how they are represented and constructed parallel to the meta narrative of the video. In order to find commonalities throughout different genres of music I created a collage for the pop girl band demographic to visualize how they are represented and if there is any correlation between different groups from all over the world, this will help to give me inspiration as I move to create a dummy mash-up music video for a pop girl group. I have examined a wide range of the repertoire of elements of what exactly makes a pop girl group, this is essentially the blueprint of a band identity is is important when constructing an advert and star image for any genre. In order to gain vital experience in how to construct an appropriate music video in relation to the genre we are creating a small section of the song “Can’t Stop the Feeling” by Justin Timberlake which has been covered by many different people in many genres ranging from rap to disco, we have been given the pop girl group section which is located towards the end of the song, you can listen to the entire mash-up of the song below.
