Production Skills evaluation 3

When setting up our Indesign document for the first time, we had to ensure that we made it the correct size for a digipak. To do this, we had to research what size a ‘normal’ digipak would be, which we found to be 142mm by 125mm, and then write in the measurements on the ‘adjust layout’ tab. This makes our digipak more realistic, and ensures that we get everything the right size.

On photoshop, one of the main tools we have been using is the ‘blur tool’, we have used this to smooth put out model’s face and make it look ‘flawless’. This helps to convey the powerful and confident star image in which we are trying to achieve.

We have used the ‘dodge tool’ on our front cover over our artists eyes, this has made them lighter. We did this because she seemed to be quite dark behind all of the feathers, this make her stand out a bit more against them, and the colour conveniently almost matches the colour of some of the feathers surrounding her.

In order to convey our genre of electro-pop, we needed to use lots of bright colours in our images, which we did. However, we decided that we wanted the colours to be even brighter and more vibrant. We went into the adjustments tab and found the vibrance and saturation tools which allows you to get exactly as much colour that you want in the image.

We made sure that our images were bright and colourful when we took them, however, we decided that some colours seemed to be much more empowering than others, which was not what we wanted. We used the colour balance tool to help us find the exact right balance between the colours, so they all stood out and were noticeable. This helped us a lot in accomplishing the look we were looking for.

Front cover

What I like:

  • We photoshopped her eyes to make them stand out more, but also to almost match the colour of the feathers.
  • I like the shape of the ‘Z’, I think it brings a funky feel to the cover.
  • I also like how vibrant the feathers are, I think it creates subtle links to the bright colours used in our music video.

How can I improve:

  • Photoshop her face to smoothen it out and make her look completely flawless.
  • Maybe make her face stand out more amongst the feathers – make it appear less purple toned.

Back cover

What I like:

  • I like the colours of the song titles and how they match the colours used in the image.
  • I like how flawless and smooth her skin looks after being photoshopped.

How can I improve:

  • Smooth out her chin more, as it doesn’t seem as smooth as the rest of her face.
  • Make the lights brighter.
  • Make sure the song titles are around her face and hand instead of being on them.
