Conventional design features of a magazine

The photo above shows an example of analyzing a current music magazine. The magazine has been labeled with the technical conventions. This task was helpful as it helped to designing a music magazine as it helped me realize the significance of these typicalities in the hopes that the magazine meets its expectations and is successful with its demographic.

When producing a music magazine you have to ensure the following:

  • Masthead
  • Plug
  • Pug
  • Inset
  • Captions
  • Main Cover Line
  • Cover Lines
  • Date
  • Price
  • Barcode
  • Main Cover Star

All of these things are crucial to think of when producing a front cover of a music magazine. The masthead is important because it is the main title, and therefore will set the tone of the magazine and it’s one of the first things you look at. Plugs are useful as they give us the reviews from different companies. Pugs give us small yet vital pieces of information. You must always include the price of the magazine as it is vital for the audience to know. Finally an example of what you must include when producing a music magazine is the main cover star as the focus of the magazine is on them and by showcasing the star, you will therefore be attracting the demographic to your magazine. Which would hopefully increase sales.
