Narrative Development

Introduction

Before undertaking our second video shoot, we decided to plan out what we would do to best make use of the limited time we had. During this task we decided what the structure of our music video, how we would use conflict, how the use of mise-en-scene would help portray our ideas, the key moments of the narrative, and how we would end the music video. This helped us get an idea of what we would need to capture on the day of the shoot. We now have a plan that we can refer to if we are struggling with ideas when shooting or editing. By completing this task we are much more confident that we will be able to have a successful video shoot.

Conclusion

By completing this task, we were able to gain an idea of what we need to do to make sure that we spend our time wisely when shooting our narrative section of the music video. This will mean that we need to capture the exact parts so when we edit our video in Premiere Pro, we are able to get the structure perfect, with the key moments and ending all being portrayed as we hoped. Narrative is important in our music video, as it will illustrate a storyline to our audience, this means that it needs to be sequenced in the right order to ensure that it makes perfect sense to the consumer.

Music Video Draft 1 – Rough Cut

Introduction

In this task, I will be analysing the first draft of our music video of Rango. This first draft contains footage from our first two shoots, and we have had our first attempt of editing them together. We had enough footage for both the narrative and performance side of the video, which meant we could put the first draft together fairly easily.

Below is our groups first draft for our music video:

Positives

  • The lip syncing and band is in time with the video.
  • The fast pace edit at the beginning of the music video.
  • Performance clips had good lighting, meaning that they did not require much post editing.
  • The editing is put together correctly, meaning the narrative and performance interact together to make sense.

Negatives

  • Throughout the music video, some shots are too long meaning that it gets boring.
  • We need to shoot a variety of shots, for example more extreme close ups.
  • Colour correction could be introduced. We are considering making all of the narrative black and white.

Targets For Improvement

For our next music video shoot to be a success, I believe that we need to get a larger variety of shots. One way that we can do this is by using multiple cameras, this will mean that we can get shots with different depths of fields. We could also reconsider who we use as our actors because the current ones lacked a bit of expression/emotions.

Reflection

This was an important task to complete because it meant that the group are now able to see what needs to be done to improve our music video. We have set ourselves some targets for improvement, meanwhile noting down what went well.

Shoot 1 Reflection

Introduction

We think that our first shoot was a great success, everything that we had to hoped to achieve we did so. We focused solely on completing the performance side of the music video. By doing this we used a full band and set up in our friends bunker. This worked extremely well and we got exactly what we desired. We feel it was a productive shoot and can definitely use the footage gained in our music video.

Positives to take from the shoot

  • Our bands performance was rather good, meaning that we were able to get some good quality footage.
  • We got a variety of different camera shots from different angles and distances, this meant that when putting it all together it will flow nicely.
  • Good use of lighting, we had multiple different lights which lit the room nicely, this included different colours.
  • Mise-en-scene was used well, for example all of our performers were wearing costumes that we had hoped for.

How to improve

  • We could have filmed the same shots more than once, this would mean that we have the perfect footage of every single shot.
  • We need more shots of our performer lip syncing, at the moment we only have two different shots and we will definitely need more.
  • We need to get more close ups.

Conclusion

Overall I think this shoot was very successful. We gained a lot of the footage that we had hoped for before the shoot, and got some bonus shots that we did not think of. As a group we now know what works and what does not, meaning that our next shoot could go even better.

Production Meeting for Shoot 1 (Performance)

Below is our Production Meeting for Shoot 1

This was a beneficial task to complete because it meant that the whole group were planned and ready for our first shoot. We also now know who is responsible for each department of the music video. It meant that I was personally able to prepare for what I needed to bring, in this case it was the camera, tripod and batteries. This was especially important because it meant that we all knew what was expected of us, and nothing was forgotten. It also helped us plan the mise-en-scene a little more than we had done previously.

This was an important task to complete because it meant that we were able to plan the whole of our first shoot and made sure that we could use the time effectively. The plan covered all aspects of the shoot, for example, who was bringing the camera, mise-en-scene and location.

Risk Assessment for Shoot 1

Below is our risk assessment for our first shoot:

This task was important for the group because we were able to anticipate the different risks/hazards that we may encounter when shooting our music video. This meant that when we were at the set we knew what to look out for. If there was an encounter with a hazard identified, we would know who was responsible for the mistake.

Risk Assessments are not only important in these media shoots, they are also important in filming in real life scenarios. Overall, I think this was an important task to complete as it meant we were all much more safe while filming.

Star Image – The Performer

Below is a Canva to represent how Catfish and the Bottlemen are represented in the media:

Catfish and the Bottlemen are represented as:

  • An up-and-coming band
  • Youthful
  • Interactive
  • Successful
  • Performers
  • Active

They are presented in the media as both ordinary and extraordinary stars, different images suggest different things. Richard Dyer called this the paradox of the star, suggesting that not only are they a regular person, but also a god-like performer. For example, you can see them performing in front of a large crowd, meanwhile when stood as a group of four they just look like ordinary people.

The band are constantly keeping their fans on their toes because of the way that they involve their fanbase, for example posting online polls. This engages the audience to the band, and makes the band seem like more ordinary people.

With the information gathered, I can see that Catfish and the Bottlemen are represented as a the youthful, interactive group. This means that when filming/planning our music video we should take this into consideration.

This was an important task to complete because I was able to understand how Catfish and the Bottlemen are represented in the media. This meant that when shooting my music video I know how to represent my performers. I also learned a little more about the paradox of the star and how it can be used to show different sides of a star.
