Adverts

The final component of my magazine is my adverts, which needed to be something that worked with my genre to pull in the correct target audience. I had to remind my self of my genre and conventions so I decided to go all the way back to the pinterest board that I made at the beginning of this process to get some ideas.

I also went back to may audience profiling presentation that I made at the start of the project, this helped me to get a grip of the age, gender and overall demographics of my target audience.  (See below). Finally, i also looked at the Blumer and Katz uses and gratification theory, to help me to engage with what I want my target audience to take away from my magazine whether that is information, social interaction, personal development or entertainment. I tried to pick two advert that would allow all of these to occur.

My Chosen Adverts:

Why?

After looking back at my original ideas, something that I was coming across on a lot of the images was the doc martin boot, which was originally made famous by the punks. I decided that this is what I wanted to feature but there was then so many adverts to chose from. I chose this one out of all of them because of the text on it that says ‘stand for individuality’. To me, this relates back to the originally formation of the punks youth culture which was formed as a resistance to the rest of society, fitting in nicely with the overall conventions of the activists.

For my next advert. I had lots of trouble choosing what brand I wanted in my magazine that would still fit in with the conventions. I came across this advert for the energy drink monster and found out that it is enjoyed by many punks/goths. Within this, the wording on the chosen advert also fits with the ongoing theme of rebellion. With both adverts that i have chosen I hope that it will help to draw in my target audience.

A New Improved Complete Magazine Draft

After putting the final touches on my original music magazine RASCAL, I have finally abandoned my work because I am really pleased with how it currently looks, and it is ready for submission. Here are my final products with my self assessments:

RASCAL; FRONT COVER

Whats new?

There are many small tiny things that I have changed in the final stages of making my magazine.

  • Something that took a while to perfect was my stars completion. When you look at a magazine the cover star always looks near to perfect, so I wanted mine to be the same. I thought that this would make the magazine professional and realistic.
  • Another last minute thing that I changed was the pug. All I did was ever so slightly angle the text because I wanted this to look more like a sticker, making the magazine look a little unconventional ad rugged.
  • Finally, I also alined everything down one side. This was simply to make the magazine more professional as well as conventional.

RASCAL; CONTENTS PAGE

Whats new?

  • I have added more articles into the features section in my magazine, this was because before having less articles kind of made my content page look like it was incomplete because there was lots of space left on the page.
  • I also brightend all the images up slightly on the page, because before hand you couldn’t really see what was going on because it was hard to make out. With these being slightly lighter, I am hoping that it will bring more people to read the certain pages.

RASCAL; DOUBLE PAGE SPREAD

Whats new?

  • Alining the text in the double page spread really helped to bring everything together. Overall it just made my magazine look neat and professional, which is what i was aiming for.
  • I also changed the font on the questions, this was simply because the other one was much harder to read. With this font it is clear and bold allowing everyone to be able to read it.

Overall I am very happy at how my magazine has turned out. I think that the brand of my magazine is presented well through all pages, sticking with my genre of punk!

“Let’s create and empower difference! RASCAL was created as a reaction to the rejections in society today, exploring the genre of punk music. Our aims are to celebrate the heavy and bold sound of punk as a community together. As well as this, we use music to explore strong views about our rights and what we can or cannot say. So…rebellion is not wrong, it’s just about being different from the rest. It’s time to rebel.”

Finally, I think that throughout my magazine there are so many elements of it which fit with my mission statement too, allowing all punks to come together as one community.

Complete Magazine Draft

It is safe to say after lots of hard work I have reached the deadline and produced all of my draft 3 pages of my magazine ready for teacher feedback. I am very happy with the outcome of my magazine however I think that it will be super helpful to get some feedback on everything from a second pair of eyes as its very hard to see you own mistakes when you were the one who produced the work.

Targets

This week is that last week that we have to complete our final draft of our magazines, so I will focus all my work in lessons on this. I will be working through my list of improvements above, having them all done and finished by the end of the week.  Hopefully, this will ensure that my magazine s the best that it can be after having feedback from many different people gaining different perspectives.

A New and Improved Contents Page

After gaining feedback from my first draft I have changed my contents page following this, improving it. Here is my new and improved contents page:

I really like my contents page and I think that it fits with the genre of my magazine well. However, this isn’t my final draft and to be able to improve further I needed even more feedback, so using a set of questions I asked someone, who has a eye for media, to give me some constructive criticism regarding my contents page. These are the questions asked in the recording below about my magazine and how I could improve for next time.

Questions:

  • How does the contents page work in tandem with the front cover?
    • Is the font/typeface consistent with the front cover?
    • What genre of music is the contents page featuring?
  • Describe the images of the stars using adjectives.
  • Which cover-lines tempt the audience to read on and which ones stand out and why?
  • How do the cover-lines reflect a music magazine? If they don’t,  which ones need to be adapted?
  • Which areas, aspects have distracting areas of integration of copy and images?
  • What aspects do you consider conventional or unconventional (page numbers, inserts, captions, catchy cover lines, editors comment?

 Recording:

Due to circumstances, I wasn’t able to record my actual interview, I was only able to take notes from the interview. However I have still recorded it as an interview, with me asking the questions and giving the feedback I received being red from my notes.

Summary of Feedback:

Targets:

From this interview I received some great feedback, all of which that I will be taking on board. Hopefully by improving further I will be able to produce a contents page of a high standard.

Draft of Contents Page

The Creation

The final component of my music magazine is the very important contents page. At first I was really unsure about how I wanted mine to look and be presented. Something that really helped me to gather all my thoughts was looming at 5+ music magazines and their contents pages as to what I needed to include in mine and and the kind of lay out to use, because it quite frankly could have had any layout as long as it included the conventions. After looking through the magazine I came up with some ideas of my own and got them all down onto paper. My ideas:

I liked all of my initial thoughts, as they all brought something new to the table. However, option one just allows for more variety of images and shows all of the conventions that I want to include at the same time, so this is the layout that I included.

For my contents page I really wanted to included something that I had created myself. so, using the Photoshop techniques that I already know, I created a really colourful background as I really wanted my contents page to jump out at a reader and draw them in and what better way to do that then via bright colours n a page! This is what i ended up with:

Making this made me realise that my magazine has a genre and this background that I initially wanted to use just simply did not fit in with my genre, and gave off pop vibes instead of punk.  So, I complete;y scrapped this idea and began working on something new and to make it fit in with my genre and magazine I used the same colours that I used in my magazine front cover. I also made the background look more like graffiti to fit in with the ‘Rascal’ and naughty ideas my mag in tails. This was my final background idea and after ll that work I was finally happy with it:

Following this I added all of my conventions, sticking to my original colour theme, I put together the first draft of my contents page. I decided to use big and bold numbers to highlight the main features in the magazine. This is what I created:

Whats Next?

Saying all of that, there is lots that I have to work on. Including changing all of my filler text to my actual titles, which will hopefully help to bring it to life using magazine titles which will draw all punks into my magazine making them want to read more about each article but at the same time by not giving much away making the audience have to go to the page to find out what the main ideas are.

A New Improved DPS

There are so many new changes that I have made to my double page spread which have helped pull together many different things. Here is my new and improved version of my double page spread:

As you can see all the changes made have made my magazine better (as listed as my targets in my previous post), these were all my changes and WHY:

Fade the background – I am changing this for the benefit of the audience, fading the background behind the text will make it easier for my audience to read my article.

Spacing in the article – This is to improve the presentation of my double page spread and will hopefully make it look professional and realistic.

Make my article about ED – I think that it just makes a lot more sense if my article is only about Ed, and hopefully by doing this the audience are less likely to be confused because there will be nothing about Cassidy who does not feature on this page.

Make pull quote smaller – Makes more space on the page.

Enlarge image – Draws the audience to the image so that they automatically now who the article is about.

More in stand first – Will make the reader know what the article includes in one starter paragraph, hopefully drawing them in.

Add page numbers – This will make the magazine realistic.

‘punk’ over the other – It will make the magazine fit in with my genre.

All of my targets which i put forward for draft 2 were met and have made my magazine fit in with the punk magazine genre so much better. Something that really helped this was my change in font. I decided to change the font of my questions to the font ‘to hell and back’ because it added a sense of grunge and naughtiness to my magazine which is exactly what I want to get out of my magazine and helps my magazine reach my target audience.

Feedback & Reflection on Draft DPS

To be able to move forward with my magazine and improve it I asked for feedback about thing that I could do to make my DPS even better then the first draft. The comments were super useful, I liked getting some second sets of eyes on it because it made me look at certain things in different ways.

My Suggested Improvements:

  • Fade the background behind the text to make sure that we don’t loose any of the text.
  • Make sure the spacing in the article is evenly spaced and looks neat
  • Make the article only bout ED, so that his whole story fits n the page and we don’t get anything about Cassidy who does not feature on the page
  • Make pull quote smaller
  • Enlarge the image
  • More in standfirst specifically about ED
  • Add page numbers
  • have ‘punk’ overlapping the other words in the masthead

All of the feedback I was given has been super useful and I look forward to taking it all on board in my second draft which will hopefully help improve my overall outcome too.

Looking Forward: what’s next?

There are multiple changes that I am currently making to my double page spread which will hopefully bring my magazine to the next level. I am using my suggested improvements, listed above, to use as my targets slowly working trough it having all of them done and improved for draft two. Hopefully by getting feedback on all of my future drafts I will be able to keep changing and improving my work to put it on a higher level, which really is the whole point in having lots of drafts because it allows you to gain feedback from many different people who will hold different views  different things. So far, I have found it super useful.

Why improve?

There are so many reasons why I am going to improve my work, and all of the changes that I make will have a further impact on my star, the genre and the values/story of my brand.

Draft of The Double Page Spread

This week I have been working on my double page spread, after we collected the images from the location shoot. There were lots of things that I had to make sure I included in my double page spread such as:

  • Masthead
  • Stand First
  • Main article
  • Pull quote and obviously my main image
  • Drop capital

I have included all of the double page spread conventions to aim to make my magazine follow AIDA making it appeal to my audience, here is my first draft:

Moving on in up and coming lessons I hope to get feedback and improve this so that it can be the best possible. I think that getting feedback on my spread will also help me because it will allow me to get other set of eyes on my magazine.

Second Shoot Contact Sheets & Evaluation

Going out on a location shoot was such a fun and exciting experience where I enjoyed both directing as well as modeling for my other classmates. My aim for the shoot was to gather photos for my contents page and double page spread.  I went into the shoot thinking that my article was going to be about punk artists challenging the punk stereotypes by making them seem elegant or young at heart. To portray the sophistication, I got my female model to dress in a formal dress with minimal jewelry to show that she is challenging the punk society by wearing clothes which are out of the stigma. Soundlessly I wanted to male model to  portray the idea of being ‘young at heart’, to do this I dressed him in traditional punk clothes but got him to also play with loads of retro kids toys in the shoot, challenging punks perceived internal traits.

I feel that  got a range of different shots, all shown below on my contract sheet:

Overall I think that I have achieved my aims and gathered some images which I really like and will potentially use, however I found adjusting to the lighting needed in the shoot very hard which can also be reflected in my images as lots of them are very dark. I have picked out my favorites and would like to use these in my double page spread as well as my contents page, these are the images that I will potentially be using.

Contents page: Images 1 & 2 are my two potential images that I want to use for my contents page. I think that this would work nicely as a contents page because I can put the text either side of the model in the surrounding space.

Double page spread (main image): The main image presented above is going to be used as my double page spread backdrop. With the space that i have created around it I am use the dents of the wall as columns for my article to follow. As well as this, the concept of the model wrapped up will help tell my story of the fact that he feels surrounded and trapped in a stereotype that he does not feel part of.

Extra images (that may also feature on my double page spread): the last few images at the bottom of the page will simply be used to help convey the story as well as move it along. This works nicely because all the images chosen have something to do with the personal story i am going to tell in that article.
