Preliminary Montage video

So that I have a greater understanding of how to create a video and also what a montage is- I have made one using the software Adobe Premiere Pro about a girls average school day. This will prepare me and make me more familiar with the software for the music video. So, to create a great montage I needed to make sure that I included:

  • A variety of shot distances
  • Different camera angles
  • Steady shots

The images below is of my story board that I used to plan out my montage so I was organised when filming.

Reflecting back on my montage video now, I have noticed the strengths and weaknesses of it, which are:

Strengths

  • Music made to intensify when a new topic/place is shown.
  • I have used a variety of shots to make the video more interesting.
  • The transition from the watch to the bell as they hold the same shape.

Weaknesses

  • I have used a clip of the same guy twice, however, in one he’s a teacher shouting at Lilli and in the other he’s seen walking out the classroom as a student.
  • In the whip pan before they walk out of the classroom, the camera jumps, therefore creating a bad transition and not a steady shot.
  • The shot of when she is opening the locker is slightly blurry.

What I have learnt about editing in preparation for my music video production is how to use Adobe Premiere Pro to cut clips, putting them in order, adding audio of my choice, using sound effect, placing in text and putting an effect on it.

Preliminary Task and Evaluation Questions

To create a sense of setting and understanding of the situation happening in the video, I have applied a variety of camera angles and shots, such as: Mid-Shot- to establish who is in the room therefore the audience won’t be confused if we were to start the scene off with just close-range shots, Close Up- to capture the actress’ expressions and emotion that they’re feeling in that current time, also, it makes them feel as if they’re watching from the other actress’ point of view, Match on Action- to give the audience a sense of understanding and a different view so it doesn’t get repetitive.

In addition, to create pace when the conversation begins to get heated and rowdy I have edited that part to have really quick shots to and from each of the actress’. In result of this, it makes the audience feel more on edge and tense.

180 degree rule, where the camera must not pass the line of action between two things interacting.

What I have most recently learnt is very important for when I am editing videos; which is continuity editing rules, these rules such as the 180 degree rule (which is when you make sure that the camera does not go past the line of action amidst the people/things in shot. This rule is to show fluidity and consistency, and most importantly to make sure that the audience doesn’t get confused.

My Tour Poster

To start off with the poster, I have researched what the typical Punk poster looks like; so that I have an understanding of what my magazine should roughly look like. As you can see, there are resemblances between them such as: the colours which are mostly black, white and red to be bold and draw attention. Also, By researching this- I have figured out the target audience which are males between the ages of 17-38.

Inspired by the already made posters, I decided to sketch out some ideas and illustrations for what mine could potentially look like. What I came up with for what the majority of punk posters hold- I have a list which consists of:

  • Bold/rude title
  • Illustrations
  • rebellious
  • Either bright colours or overuse of black

 

Below is my final poster that I have created by using Photoshop and InDesign. What was one of the most important things I needed to remember was the themes of the punk genre- so that everything was in-your-face and aggressive. What I really like about my tour poster is the main text font, the background and the colour reflecting behind him, because it makes him stand out which leads the audience to look at his face and acknowledge his expression.

What I dislike about this is that the title is slightly blurry as I made it into an image and enlarged it. Also, the background matches the theme well, however, I think that it could possibly distract the audience to look at the background rather than the main cover star and the information.

Overall, I think that my Punk tour poster will attract the target audience that I was trying to aim for, and that I have researched thoroughly the punk genre- therefore have created a poster well suited to it.

 

My copy of a professional magazine front page

To have an understanding of why and most importantly how; magazine producers create a captive front cover to draw in readers, we created our own copy of a magazine to try and get it very similar (so the exact same writing, fonts, however we could choose a different picture of the artist). Looking at the end result of my front cover, I have noticed that the fonts are very similar and are almost matching. Another strength that I think reflects on my front page is the placings of all the different texts and the bar code, also the bright colour in the background gives life to the cover and represents her auburn hair which you cannot see in the black and white photo. My weaknesses for this task are:

  • The white of the writing cannot be seen on some parts of the page due to the background.
  • The picture should have been closer up, I think it would look better with the photo in colour and have a dull background.
  • The cutting out of the picture in Photoshop went not so smoothly, therefore it seemed quite uneven and not neat.
  • Resizing the image once imported.

I have researched on YouTube three different tutorials for the weaknesses that I found difficult; and have found some useful videos that I can follow so I know for when I am creating my own magazine:

 

Lick and stick mock up

I have looked at the conventional technical design features of a particular magazine; NME -to be able to recognise why they put in these features to make my future work and magazine even better. What I have noticed about this brand of magazine makes the Front Cover Star the main attraction.

The terms that I have picked up from this were: The Masthead- this is the large title of the magazine that lets the reader know the brand of the magazine (often put behind the main cover star to make them stand out but in this case it fits nicely in front). It is also a blinding white that contrasts with her red hair. The date and price are in fine print on the top left, as it’s not the main attention the producers want the readers to see as that’s not what’s going to pull them in and grab their attention. The Plug is a caption that makes the reader want to buy the magazine as it holds an interesting caption, These are similar to the cover lines as they both do the same job of engaging the audience.

Pug’s are usually in a brightly coloured shape with bold font colours on top to really entice the target audience because they know who they are trying to sell this to, however, in this issue- the Pug is more discrete due to the fact that it is in quotes, but what makes out to be the Pug is the bold writing and different font to make the information stand out from the rest of the writing, also so it doesn’t become repetitive.

The Main Cover Line is the second biggest feature to stand out, generally, it has the name of the artist/person or what is the main theme of the magazine. This edition says the main cover star’s name which is Florence from the band Florence And The Machine, this makes the reader instantly know who it is and switch their brain to think whether they like her which then results in them making a decision of if they want to purchase the magazine.

This information about conventional technical design features will help me and give me a further understanding of how these particular terms create an excellent magazine and the ways in which they make them sell well.

 

Technical Camera Terms

This contact sheet of photos are showing different framing, distance and angles, we did this by changing and playing with the shutter speed and the aperture on the camera. The aim of this shoot was to tell a different story in each one by using these rules to go by and use our imagination to create really different photos. What I like about this first contact sheet is that there is a great variety in in just 30 pictures, moreover- the fifth row beholds mystery and wonder as it includes photos of people walking somewhere unknown, a blurred strangers face and spying through glass; these pictures include a range of distance shots (such as close up and mid-range shots) as well as framing (which we used the wall on the last photo as the lines are leading the viewer’s eyes towards the person in the picture), this ties in with the rule of thirds which means that you divide the photo into thirds and where objects/people are in the frame can tell you a lot about the picture. We also used many angles, for example; high, low and mid.

A few weeks ago I did not know many camera angles or that distance and framing could really tell a story within a picture, furthermore, even just where the camera’s focus is on the photo can make the biggest difference. This is because it’s showing the audience the picture of what is going on and giving the story though just an image. Body language is also a key feature when it comes to photographing an expressive picture because it instantly implies what the person is feeling or doing and creates the mood and atmosphere of the photo.

The camera talks

Above is the mood board that I created out of the photos from the shoot that I think told the most stories and were effective for the viewer. The first theme we looked at was angles that the pictures could be taken from, and to make sure we experimented with this properly; we made sure that we included most of the angles (may not all be on here).  As you can see at the very top of the page under ‘Angles’ there is the row of pictures that I took myself of my partners to find these angles.  We’ve found that low angles such as: the left and middle-top picture convey a more powerful status to them, also the hashtag I used for the ‘DO NOT ENTER’ picture was #rebel which I feel connotes to this well because they are disobeying the sign-  the viewer straight away can tell how the people in the image are feeling because of their posture. This is my favourite image from the shoot as the lighting is also dark and mysterious, and their faces have a strong expression.

Reflecting back at these photos I feel that I could have got some better examples of the framing pictures because they could possibly be put under the distance category, therefore I could have got more distinct photos. However, I think that the pictures taken for angles and distance/depth have captured each one well as I thought hard about them, but I then got confused on the idea of framing as I thought it was something else, however I now know the difference.

My Image That Uses Mise-en-scene For Meaning

This is my mood board I created to show examples of the Mise-en-scene that makes up the genre of punk.  As you can see, one of the main points of the punk look stands out is the hair- usually it is dyed with bright colours (or a different colour) and is styled very differently to the normal hairstyle. The usual hairstyle to have completely shaved sides of the head and a massive Mohawk or either spiked out with hair gel.

The denotations for the punk genre are: studs, bright hair, geld hair, tartan trousers, ripped jeans, leather/denim jacket, suspenders, an attitude, combat boots, safety pins. The connotations for these are because they need to have an act kept up of aggression and that they are careless and rebel to society’s norms.

 

 

The picture below is of my partner after we attempted to use parts of other costumes to create the punk look.  I think that the turn-out of this look didn’t go that great- because we couldn’t find many items that contributed to the theme. However what we did find was a coloured wig which punks have brightly coloured hair (also some have long hair too).

Punks also wear a lot of checked/tartan so we chose the over sized checked jacket, moreover,  we stayed to the trouser and shoe colour of black as they wear a lot of the colour as it resembles danger, evil and menace.  His body language is slumped and connotes a lazy, moody and careless person.  Moreover, he has a deathly stare  right into the camera which makes the audience feel threatened.

Adjectives that denote to this picture are: edgy, hardcore, scary, careless, reckless, rebellious, unanimated and dark.

 

 

 

After researching and testing the punk genre and looking into their behaviour and the way they dress, we have put together a costume and  decided on what camera angles and shots we should take to get the best result. For the costume, he is wearing: black, ripped skinny jeans, white, scruffy converse a top which had ‘London Calling’ written across it (which fitted in perfectly with the British punk theme), a denim jacket with the sleeves ripped off, badges and pins (stickers), and then we also spiked up his hair to create the Mohawk look and then finally sprayed his hair green, so it fitted the bright hair colour trend that they follow.

For the lighting, I used: a key light- this is used as the main source of lighting as it points directly at the person, a fill light- which fills in the rest of the light that the key light misses, and a back light- this form of lighting is stationed towards the back so there isn’t as much shadow from the key and fill light. We used these three lights so we could have a bright light that makes the punk character stand out. The lighting is bold which connotes the genre of punk as they are extremely bold with their: hair, clothes, piercings, and attitude.

Lots of thought went into looking at what body language and positions he should possess for the shoot as we wanted the pictures to come out as punk-like as possible. Ideas that we had to create this was to firstly keep the facial impression angry and moody looking and not to smile because this would give off being friendly and inviting  which is the opposite impression of what we want. Another thing that I noticed was that in a photo; everything was given through the person’s body language therefore we went for a more slouched and careless impression. Also, showing violence fits in with the genre of punk perfectly- this lead us to take some mid-action shots of him kicking the box and smashing the guitar.

For his punk-themed makeup I used eyeliner around his eyes and smudged it a bit, this creates an edgy and threatening vibe. The reason for me smudging the eyeliner was so he perceived to be furthermore carefree and so he would look more roughed up. The only props that we used was a roughed up black box for him to sit/stand/mess around on, and a guitar. The guitar fits in really well with the Punk genre as the majority are mainly musically invloved and see music as a passion, therefore this resembles the theme tremendously.


Below, is the picture I have chosen for the front cover of the magazine. I’ve chosen this particular picture because it includes the majority of the ideals that a Punk guy would possess, for example: The green, spiked up hair, the eyeliner, a moody and scowling look, the ripped jeans being in focus suggest his carelessness, his body language is also slumped, and the dog collar adds the idea of rebellion. The fists connote to violence, also creating a sense of anger. And the writing on the fists ‘PUNK ROCK’ shows the audience straight away what this magazine is going to be about.

The camera angle is a mid shot and is lower down to make him more intimidating and a threat. 

Print media that communicates meaning

I have learnt a great deal of what makes up a good album poster, and also how to deconstruct the different parts that contribute to this. What the consumer sees and takes in is all that matters for the producer, therefore they think hard about semiotics like: lighting, image, colour, target audience and age. Further more, depending on what is on the front cover (image wise) is critical because that is what the consumer will be drawn to. For example; the band poster above is extremely random- because as you can see there is a cat wearing a crown. The producers have done this to pull them in and read the information- therefore the producers have achieved their goal.

This results in developing a symbolic meaning behind each element of the poster. Analysing the poster will help me with the front cover of my magazine as they are unquestionably similar due to them both having the same aspects and ideals.
