Aspects of Mise-en-scene (CLAMPS) I’ve learnt and will use…

  • Costume
  • Lighting
  • Acting
  • Make-up/Hair
  • Props
  • Setting

Aspects of the camera I’ve learnt and will use…

  • Depth of Field
  • Camera Distance
  • Camera Angles
  • Shutter Speed
  • Focusing (manually or auto)
  • Flash Photography

By using each of these elements I have learnt how I can photograph a successful image of my star. Mise-en-scene will help to set the scene and atmosphere of the image, as it’s important to be able to tell a story though a single image. When taking the photo with the camera I’ll consider angles, distance and flash, as it’ll improve the quality of my work.

So… I’m ready to make some media!

When making my own magazine cover, I need to think about the specific target audience I am trying to aim it at. My target audience consists of 16-30 year old of both genders so I will need to make the masthead and typefaces stand out for that particular audience. I also need to consider AIDA which stands for:

  • Attraction
  • Interest
  • Desire
  • Action

Using AIDA can aid me when making my magazine cover because I will try to make my cover attractive to my target audience in order to interest them into buying my magazine. I will interest my audience by using bold colours such as yellow and burgundy and making my masthead bold to go with the bold theme.

I also need to think about camera techniques. When I am shooting the photos for my cover, I will ensure I have used the correct aperture and ISO to work with my background to make sure the pictures aren’t blurry or too light/dark. I will also ensure that I have thought about angles and poses for my model to try.

Using mise-en-scene I can make sure that my costumes, lighting, acting, props and makeup line up with my target audience which should be stuff they’d wear or buy to make sure they’re the perfect audience for my genre.

Blumler and Katz’s theory also plays a big role in the creation of my magazine cover. Using their theory I can question why I have done certain things with my magazine. For example, I will question the type of media I’ve used to convey my magazine cover.

So… How can an image communicate meaning?

There are many different aspects to think about when creating media, a lot more than you think.

I have learnt many things over the past couple of weeks, including how to use a DSLR and the techniques of how to take an effective photo; adding Mise-en-scene into work to create successful media; making sure your media fits the target audience; and how to make media appealing to the consumers.

Mise-en-scene is the placement and arrangement of things in the photo, to create a story through only visible aspects within a picture. One way to remember the features of Mise-en-scene is “CLAMPS” to take a successful image:

  • Costume
  • Lighting
  • Acting
  • Makeup/hair
  • Props
  • Setting

When using aspects of the camera to tell a story you need to think about the focus, angle and distance of your image, this will help your media to progress. When making my own music magazine I will remember each aspect to successfully create a magazine that is interesting and entertaining for my target audience. Both Mise-en-scene and photography work well together to create meaningful media, for example normally a low angle of a character indicates power, but if its a low shot of a sad child this would not represent control. This is why it’s important for the photography to link with the Mise-en-scene to work successfully.

So… Hello Media Studies

Media is a topic that I have always been interested in, and I knew I wanted to study it in sixth form.

As media has been growing over the years becoming more and more popular, I really want to learn the different ways it impacts society and how it’s produced during the time I spend in media studies. By using skill I already have, like photography and posting media, I can put that towards my learning and help to create my own media content. I would like to learn about different styles of media and how the attract different audiences, exploring new idea of what media could look like and how its transformed over the years.

I often take photos and edit pictures by using filters or effects, this adds to the skills I already have and how I can incorporate them into my learning. I can’t wait to expand my skills and ideas on media studies throughout the next year.

The Media Ecology. Map of concepts and mediascape.

Media Ecology is the study of how media and communication processes affect human perception, feeling, emotion and value. Media Ecology influences everyday actions and attitudes in society.

Below is a mind map demonstrating how different aspects of media rely on each other to continue producing content, we linked 8 different aspects:

  • Government
  • Money
  • Audience
  • Technology
  • Distribution
  • Social media
  • Creators
  • Institutions

As a group we were given institutions to focus on, we think it is one of the most important aspects of media. Institutions help to supply and run media content, and with out it there would be nowhere to present and consume media, e.g. the BBC and YouTube.

When I create my magazine I will keep media ecology in mind, as each of the elements will influence how it is made and presented. I’ll definitely think about institutions, to express my understanding and appreciation, as I believe they are over looked when observing how media is produced. By creating a bold and attractive front cover the public will be more enticed to buy the product, and through social media the magazine will be advertised. The magazine will profit from the audience that pays to see its content, allowing more production of the media they want and find interesting.

Below are all the other aspects, showing how each of them link together:

So…I’m a media prosumer

My media prosumption!

We all consume media everyday, and can link it to Blumler & Katz theory – Uses and Gratification:

  • Entertainment
  • Social Interaction
  • Personal Identity
  • Information

I have made a media collage that defines me, and my personal identity. It includes TV shows, movies, music artists, social media, shopping sites and celebrities that I keep up with. I think my media collage fits with Blumler & Katz theory, as it includes what I enjoy watching/listening to for entertainment; what I like to read and collect information from; which social media I contact friends with; and the other aspects of media that help create my personal identity.

When creating my magazine I will keep each of these four media influences in mind to help attract audience. Within my magazine I will try and involve every part of Blumler & Katz theory, to make my magazine successful. I’ll include information about the content; pictures and descriptions of personal identity and text that is entertaining and an interesting subject of conversation.
