Contents page

This is my contents page, the purpose of a contents page is to inform the reader about the different articles inside the magazine. It is supposed to be easy to read and simple so you can get a quick glance at it and decide if you want to continue reading. I have put all the contents titles at the top of the page so they do not clash with the model so the attention is shared evenly between the two. There is also a colour scheme, red and white I feel work very well together and then I have put the page number in a light blue so it can be different from the page numbers in the contents section.

Branding Ideas + Mission Statement

My music magazine will be called “Trap Louder” and will be for the rap music genre. I have called the magazine Trap Louder because is short and catchy, the word trap comes from the southern hip hip scene and has progressively increased in size as a sub genre in rap music. They called it Trap music because a trap was known as somewhere that drugs were exchanged or a place where people would hustle to make personal wealth, then some rap music was based around the trap and the problems/benefits, this was then known as Trap music. The rap genre is all to do with recurring beats with are then rhymed to by a performer in a high tempo. The genre is normally associated with crime and violence which we can see most predominantly in Gangsta Rap such as The Notorious B.I.G, 2Pac and many others. The genre is also seen to like their jewelry and showing off expensive accessories making them seem wealth and often intimidating.

Previous Student’s Work

In this indie pop magazine we can see a variety of examples where camera and Photoshop have been used to manipulate the photo. Firstly the cover star on the front page of the magazine has quite clearly been edited and distorted to create the shattered illusion, this illusion relates to the cover line “Do You Blend In?” and amplifies the physical significance to whether or not she blends in, which she doesn’t. Another really good example of where this student has used camera, Photoshop and framing to take and manipulate the image is the double page spread where we can see the background for the page is a photo of her in front of some leaves. The framing of the photo is slightly to the right which would make sense so you can see her on most of one of the pages and the other page contains the articles of the magazine. The image has also been edited in Photoshop to create the colour outline affect which helps bring attention to the star.

The front cover gives a great example of where the student has used mise-en-scene to create meaning. The cover star is dressed very appropriately for her indie pop target audience as we can see she is wearing a choker which is often a item of clothing seen on indie pop artists. Also the hair and make up on the cover star relates to the main cover line “Do you blend in?” because the way she’s holding her hairĀ  is like she’s pulling it out due to the stress of not blending in. However this is seen differently because off the confidence that she has in the pose and also her facial expressions convey that she doesn’t care if she fits.

This student has used a specific choice of words that engages with her target audience for her indie pop genre. On the contents page we can see that she uses the words “kick-ass cowgirl boots” the use of the word kick-ass helps when targeting a younger audience demographic, the cowgirl boots are also a piece of clothing that is associated with the indie pop genre, so fans will be more enticed to read and buy her magazine. The cover lines also relate to the indie pop genre in the way that blending in is unusual for the genre, therefore by using the rhetorical question “do you blend in?” helps target her specific audience.

On the front cover we can see where this student has clearly used DTP to edit her cover star to create effect. The cover star has been edited to create the shattered effect, this effect conveys the fact that she doesn’t fit it as stated on the cover line. On the double page spread the photo she has used as her background has been manipulated to give the effect of the glow around her making her come across innocent a true to the genre. The contents page shows great examples where DTP has been used to insert and manipulate images. Firstly on the left hand side of the contents page we can see that she has added a few photos but you can only see a small portion of each photo. Each of the photos shows something different giving variety and making the page more enjoyable to look at.

My Tour Poster

Using my original image I created a Tour Poster using adobe inDesign. Not only did this task help me learn how to use adobe inDesign but it also helped me understand the different features of a magazines cover and how it appeals to a target audience.

Targets:

  • Cut out the model better
  • Learn how to edit and manipulate text better

So How Can An Image Communicate Meaning

Images can tell a story to the viewer in a number of different ways. I have looked at how angles, distances and framing have been used to communicate a story to the viewer. Another important factor that plays a role in telling a story is the mise-en-scene that can help represent people, places, events and things. In the future I will be able to use the knowledge I have about framing, angles, distances and mise-en-scene to make my media specific to the target audience demographic.

A Front Cover Analysed

All the features of a magazines front cover are put there for a reason. For example the way this magazine dressed their cover star shows how they are trying to target a younger audience by dressing him with that fashion sense. In my magazine i will include the features and make them specific to the target audience.

Audience Profiling

We created a audience profile to investigate who listens to certain genres of music. The website yougov.co.uk allowed us to find the specific group of people that listen to certain genres. This information will be useful to me when I come to create my music magazine because I will know the audience I am targeting to sell the magazine to.
