To familiarise ourselves with how shots and camera techniques can create meaning we made a short video montage. We also used this task to practice keeping the camera steady whilst shooting video and also using a variety of different shots. This montage needed to communicate an idea/concept, our concept being loneliness/lost.

Montage

I think that my montage has an emotional impact because it makes the audience feel sympathetic towards the girl because she’s on her own. This shows that the sequence conveys a feeling of loneliness by the sole focus of each shot being this girl, with no other people in any of the shots. A specific shot which creates meaning is the extreme close up of the eye with a tear (0:09); this shot shows her sadness and distress from being lonely/isolated.

My montage wasn’t intended to tell a story, instead it was meant to just reflect the concept of loneliness. This was so we could focus more on how the ideas were conveyed through the camera techniques rather than coming up with a story. In order to strongly convey our theme of loneliness without a story we used repetition of some shots, for example the corridor shot (0:11 and 0:28) which shows the monotony of being on her own to the audience.

If I were to shoot this montage again, I would use another tracking shot because I feel like the video needs more movement. By this I mean in most of the shots the model is just standing still so more video filming techniques could’ve been used to communicate meaning instead of just angles and static shots. This exercise has helped me prepare for making my music video because it has allowed me to become familiar with filming techniques rather than just photography, it has also introduced me to Adobe Premiere which is the computer program I’ll be using to edit my music video.
