So… How can an image communicate meaning?

Today in class we were given the task to take photos and show how those images communicate meaning to the audience using CLAMPS. Images can communicate meaning using the following terms

  • Costume
  • Lighting
  • Acting & Proxemics
  • Make up & Hair
  • Props
  • Setting

For example the costume plays a massive part in the meaning as if the costume doesn’t reflect on the genre/style then the entire photo wouldn’t make sense and it wouldn’t be typical to the style. Similar to costume setting plays a massive part in the feeling of the picture if its a sad image trying to communicate a sense of emotion and in the background there was a bright colourful sky it wouldn’t resemble the effect correctly meaning many of mise-en-scene is incredibly important in how the image comes across to the audience.

The use of CLAMPS will help me portray the correct meaning as it will help enable me what type of things to make sure i am careful about in making sure that my image is presented in the correct way for the style.

Camera angles and framing of the image communicates a huge meaning for the image because for example if its a low angle shot then the image might be portraying the effect of dominance and power where as a high angle shot could portray the feeling of innocence and weakness on the audience,  this is why camera is a huge reason on communicating effect to the audience.

The Camera Talks

Mood board Task –

Today our task was to go into pairs and take lots of pictures which try too display an effect on the audience e.g anger or happiness, we then selected our favourite 9 images to add to our mood board, all of these had to include three hashtags:

  • #the technical term (#longshot#lowangle)
  • #the example/denotation (#manalone#lookingcross)
  • #the analysis/connotation (#lonely#excited#leaving)

How well did we achieve our aims-

Our main themes of focus during the creation of our mood board was to try and be edgy and different so that our mood board would stand out, we tried to do this by getting interesting angles and then keep a straight face to create a serious but edgy feeling for the audience. We feel as if we achieved our aims because our lighting really portrays the relevant hashtags for example for the happier images we tried to make them brighter by using the flash where as for the darker feeling we used no flash and used nature to create a raw element to them.

How does the camera create meaning

Today we took lots of pictures that were all using the various camera techniques to create meaning, we gathered all of these pictures by putting them into contact sheets where we then chose our 9 favorite images to put into our mood board.

Camera Techniques

The camera creates meaning through the way the photo is taken for example:

  • Close up
  • Mid Shot
  • Long Shot
  • Low Angle Shot
  • High Angle Shot
  • Depth Of Field
  • Canted Shot
  • POV Shot

The way these techniques create an effect is for example with a close up it often creates quite a serious effect on the audience where as a long shot creates a sense of freedom and space, the way in which a photo is taken has a dramatic effect on the emotions that are portrayed in the image and towards the audience.

My image that uses mise-en-scene to communicate meaning.

Mise En Scene-

  • Costume – Class & status, uniformity
  • Lighting – shadows, colours
  • Acting & Proxemics – Body Language
  • Makeup and Hair – style and fashion
  • Props – props that show meaning e.g social class
  • Setting –  background

For this task my group was allocated the genre of indie. We were assigned to do a photo shoot for an album cover. whilst doing some research the main elements we were interested in were:

  • Fashion
  • Make up/Hair styles
  • Indie Posters
  • Indie Bands/Music

During the photo shoot process some key elements that were highlighted were, the appearance of indie people who typically would wear simple styled clothes with light make up and headbands as discovered throughout the research. A key example is ‘Florence and the Machine’ She wears plain dresses with her hair in a natural way, she also has subtle make up on making her perfect for the typical connotations to the genre. Furthermore the main themes we noticed whilst analysing current indie band posters was that most of them share this ‘loud’ vibe where it really grasps the viewers attention with bright popping colours with an abstract typeface and also this simplicity effect.

Print Media that Communicates Meaning

Tour Poster

How does the poster reflect on colour, fonts, body language and lighting?

Colour –  The yellow background stands out which grabs the audience’s attention. The connotations of the poster represent wealth and power. Also the use of yellow shows that he is very unique.

Fonts – The typeface that is used is very cool and really grabs the readers attention as ts snappy and unique and also is a eye catching colour purposely done to create more interest about the poster.

Body Language – The Body Language of the ‘Weeknd’ creates a very menacing and powerful effect it also makes the audience feel as though he is very rebellious which makes him seem strong and unique as his poster is a rejection of mainstream ideas.

Lighting – The lighting on his face is dark which adds the theme of mystery to the picture but also shows how he is a rebellious character and goes for bold decisions with his tour poster’s.

Media Collage

Bulmer & Katz Uses And Gratification Theory

‘The Bulmer & Katz Uses And Gratification Theory’ is the way we understand what types of media we all consume throughout our various interests which range in these four headings below.

  • Personal Identity
  • Social Interaction
  • Entertainment
  • Education and Information

I’m a media Prosumer, this means that as well as consuming the various types of media e.g “Entertainment”  I also produce media, one way I produce Media is by uploading pictures/videos to social media platforms such as Instagram or Snapchat. Whilst creating my Media Collage I found various links in my interests from the “Bulmer & Katz Uses And Gratification Theory'” for example ‘The Killers’ falls into the area of “entertainment” as that’s the genre of music I enjoy to listen to but also ‘Personal Identity’ as It shows people a bit about my taste of music which helps them get a better understanding of the type of person I am, this also shows some ‘social Interaction’ asit is art of my social circle the genre of music we listen to.

This Theory will Benefit the producing of any Media I create for example my “Music Magazine”, as it will allow me to focus on the more important sections to enable me to get my message across to the audience of the text.

The Media Ecology. Map of concepts and mediascape.

Media Ecology Map

The Media Ecology

The Media Ecology is made up of 8 different segments, I was focused on the ‘Social Media’ segment and you can see how they are linked in the image above. The 8 segments for the Media Ecology are listed below:

  • Social media
  • Money
  • Technology
  • Creators
  • Government
  • Institutions
  • Distribution
  • Audience

All of these segments are very important to each other, as without any one of them all of them wouldn’t be able to work/exist for example:

Without the Technology we have today there would be no such thing as “Social Media” so therefore there would be no “Creators” meaning there would also be no “Audience”  to watch any creators meaning none of them could exist in the way they do today.

Additionally without Money the various type of media wouldn’t be able to be produced or distributed, which means that institutions such as the ‘BBC‘ or “ITV” wouldn’t have any Media to share to their audience meaning that lots of institutions wouldn’t exist anymore without media or funding.

Whilst researching about the media ecology I have acquired that I need to focus on these 8 segments when producing further media such as my ‘Music Magazine’ so that I can guarantee my understanding of the components I need to analyse.

So… Hello Media Studies

Hello my name is Tyler McCarthy

What I’m hoping to learn from Media Studies

What I want to learn from Media Studies is how modern types of media for example social media, has an impact on how people live and act in society.

What Skills do I have?

The skills I already have in Media studies is that I took it at GCSE and achieved two B’s. I also have good communication and teamwork skills from when I took part in the Specsavers Media Camp where I had to work in a team of 6 to promote a product for them.

What skills will I gain from Media Studies?

I think media studies will help me gain certain skills such as creative skills and further improve my teamwork and communication skills. The types of creative skills that I am hoping to gain from doing A level media is better organisation skills and better knowledge of how to use certain software’s for example Photoshop.
