Initial song ideas for a video – Mini pitch

Mini Pitch –

Here is my mini pitch to the two songs ‘Rely on me’  by James Smith which is about a heartbreak which then ends up with both of the people still in love with each other ‘relying’ on one another just like they used to. This is the exact genre of music I want to use for my own music video as it is really moving and creates emotion for your audience which most likely will be able to sympathise with the topics making it a much more relatable song and piece to produce. The main Ideas for this song are a performance scene where there is a dark room (on stage) and there is a piano with a spotlight on it, with various lights around, also a smoke machine or a smoke element to the scene, then I want the camera to slowly dolly around the piano while the song flips between this scene and the narrative scene’s. For the narrative scene’s Im thinking of you get a short glimpse of there happy relationship together and then it all turns sour with a big argument that leaves them single, but then towards the end of the song they are back to depending on each other when maybe they shouldn’t be but they know they shouldn’t be anymore.

My second piece I have chosen is ‘Honesty’  by Pink Sweat$ which is about falling in love instead of falling out of love, I have chosen this song as similarly to the first piece its to do with love which is most probably a highly relatable topic for my target audience so they should be able to enjoy the song and the video if they have a clear understanding of what the music means for them, for the performance section of this song what I have in mind is him in the rain with quite a close up shot singing to her and she is almost tempted by him but is strong. enough to resist him, and I can do various shots such as this but with different themes and aesthetics. For the narrative section of this piece I see the guy chasing the girl her wants, he is always trying to find her but he is unable to for a long time until towards the end he finally finds her and is unable to get what he ‘wants’ and get the girl he loves.

How am I going to keep my narrative unique –

To ensure that my narrative for my music video is different to the usual ‘soap opera’ relationship Im going to ensure I keep it unique to most music video relationship breakdowns that you see, i’m going to aim to do this by including different themes and emotions from the relationship seen by the audience such as a surprise from one of the members of the relationship and maybe the feeling of envy as this isn’t something you see much off in a sad music video, Im going to add some elements of jealousy in the music video as I think that is a key relatable emotion for many people which should make the audience sympathise and connect much better to my music video. These ideas should hopefully make my narrative stand out and remain much different to the current ‘sad’ music video’s there are already out there.

Prelim Task Lip Syncing Exercise

Lip Sync exercise –

Today we were assigned to do lip sync challenge to the song by Dua Lipa ‘New Rules’ here is my edited video.

The things I think went well with my lip sync exercise are –

  • All my clips are matched correctly to the music
  • There is a good variety in camera angles
  • There is good balance between models throughout the video

Things that I could have improved are –

  • more diverse transitions
  • more actions/dancing included to add further interest to my video
  • I could have used a panning shot to add some more development to my video.

Star Image –

My lip sync video is important to my star image as doing this will enable my audience to gain a better understanding of the emotion/feeling the song is supposed to give off to them, It is also aimed to keep them entertained whilst when watching it.

Favourite Music Video from Former Student

I really like this music video as its a similar genre to the song I would like to create so it has given me some good inspiration for some shot designs and some narrative ideas.

My favourite things about the music video are –

  • The song is correctly synced to the lips of the models in the video
  • Good variety of shots e.g pan, close up, long shot
  • I like how it starts with the playing of the tape but then ends with him throwing the tape, shows a good progression. of the. narrative and the storyline has been well thought out.
  • I like how the girl is shown as a separate narrative it starts with her walking to then her lying down on grass with flowers this is a really attractive shot as it uses really good colour balancing with the pure white of her dress to the red/orange colours from the flowers, this really draws the audience to the video.
  • I like the shot where the guy leaves the greenhouse for the first time in the video and there are two of him phasing into each other, this is a good shot as it emphasises the strength and emotion in the vocals and it is a really cool effect to use as a way of attracting the viewer.

Themes/Ideas –

The main themes I think are being presented throughout the music video are love and isolation as it is clear that the main guy is ‘trapped’ in the greenhouse and that it seems he cannot escape. He is also desperately in love with the lady that we say throughout the video which adds a love element to the video.

Music Video Form & Conventions

Today we were given the task of choosing 4 different music video’s preferably from different genre’s, we had to analyse these videos in three different areas, mise en scene, Impact/appeal (Themes) and the structure of the narrative. This helps me understand the depth of how each and every thing matters in a music video, it also has given me inspiration for my own music video.

Prelim Task Mood Montage

This is our storyboard for our montage –

Today we were put into groups of two, we have to create a montage on two different themes we chose from a list, we chose ‘practice makes perfect’ and ‘frustration’. Our montage is based about a 100m sprint and the character needs to make it in a certain time but is unable too and is determined to finish it in the correct time.  Our montage is 15 shots and will roughly last for 30-60 seconds.

Do you think your montage has an impact? – Yes I think my montage creates a good effect to the viewer as it shows good determination to get better at playing the piano, it shows to never give up and you will be able to succeed.

Do you get a sense of feeling or story / relationship? – There is a story of progression with his ability for his piano skills

How does one specified cuts create meaning? –  (3 seconds) My first cut matches when he would be sitting down which displays a musical effect as he seems like he is quite excited and engaged to learn and play the piano.

Is there a sense of progression or are you trying just to reflect an experience? – There is a sense of progression as my model progressive gets better throughout the montage, I have shown this by directing my model to present sad/happy faces to match what he is playing which shows a progression.

Do you use repetition of some shots? If so, how do they help communicate your idea? – I haven’t repeated any shots as I wanted to make every shot portray a different emotion/feeling towards the audience.

What additional shot would you have liked to get to further communicate the idea? – I would have liked to get a panning shot of when my model sat down at the start of my montage as It would have shown more of what my model looks like and gain a better sense of character for my montage.

How could I have further communicated meaning – 

In my montage I tried to show how he has been successful through practise by showing his disappointed face once he has played something he didn’t like, I then reflected this by him playing something he likes and then he smiles because he is happy with his progress. To further communicate this progression through practise I would add more shots such as a panning shot of his immediate reaction from playing the piano to then his happy expression so that the viewer knows that he has now been making progress, I could also use the same technique at the start when he is learning to show that he wasn’t happy with what he was playing to then when he was,  as a clear reflection so then the audience have a much clearer idea of his progression throughout his practise.
