Textual Analysis in The Dark Knight

Superhero Analysis

Batman challenges some general superhero archetypes as he is quite controversial.

      • Weakness – Batman’s weakness is his psychological trauma from the past, specifically involving his parents and their death.
      • Powers – Unlike most superheroes, Batman does not possess any inhuman superpowers. He does, however, possess a genius-level intellect, is a peerless martial artist, and his vast wealth affords him an extraordinary arsenal of weaponry and equipment.
      • Appearance – Batman’s costume is used to conceal his identity, protect himself, and frighten criminals. Most versions of the Batsuit incorporate some form of body armor, powered exoskeleton, “wingsuit”-cape, built-in augmented reality computer, night-vision, gas filters, and other aids for protection or effectiveness in combat.
      • Motives/Intentions – Batman’s motivation for what he does is to eradicate crime or at the very least, catch criminals and bring them to justice. This drive was started by the murder of his parents. Ever since he has decided to strike fear into those who prey on the fearful.

The Ultimate Villain (The Joker)

  • The terrifying costume of the joker the iconic extra lipstick smile that no other Villain can ever replicate. The Joker’s face paint is patchy and his clothes look weathered. But that’s what really added to making him feel more Real.
  • The Joker didn’t have any Agenda to follow, The Joker did what he did because he liked it, and though he’s incredibly destructive, he does all of it for “fun”, for the simple reason that it gave him pleasure. That makes him so unique amongst villains.
  • He is not afraid of dying as he knows that Batman can not kill him so he puts his life on the line because he knows Batman won’t be able to change what he does.
  • The Joker Understands the Batman on an Emotional and Personal level. He gets into his mind and toys around with Batman’s darkest secrets. On the whole Joker doesn’t mind getting killed in the process.
  • The Joker is not afraid of batman which is a problem because his arguably most important power is of intimidation which does not affect the joker which adds a phycological scar on Batman.

The Dark Knight Narrative Analysis

The Dark Knight is a superhero movie, so therefore it follows similar archetypes which are present in other superhero movies. however, in parts of the movie, it sways away from the archetypes and story ring and some points are hard to pick out as the story peers away from the ring structure at times. An example of this is at the end of the movie when Batman becomes the villain. This is surprising to see as we don’t normally see the hero end the story in a crisis and has lost, because we normally see the hero win and is accomplished by the end, however, the hero feels guilty and unaccomplished.
