Initial song ideas for a video – Mini pitch

After listening to a variety of different songs and watching multiple music videos. I began to think about what sort of a music video that I wanted to make, and the narrative and song that I wanted to use. For my pitch, I chose “Try” by Colbie Caillat. This song is about accepting yourself for who you, and removing thoughts and expectations on body image.

TRY

Put your make-up on
Get your nails done
Curl your hair
Run the extra mile
Keep it slim so they like you, do they like you?

Get your sexy on
Don't be shy, girl
Take it off
This is what you want, to belong, so they like you
Do you like you?

You don't have to try so hard
You don't have to, give it all away
You just have to get up, get up, get up, get up
You don't have to change a single thing

You don't have to try, try, try, try
You don't have to try, try, try, try
You don't have to try, try, try, try
You don't have to try
You don't have to try

Mm, mm

Get your shopping on, at the mall, max your credit cards
You don't have to choose, buy it all, so they like you
Do they like you?

Wait a second,
Why, should you care, what they think of you
When you're all alone, by yourself, do you like you?
Do you like you?

You don't have to try so hard
You don't have to, give it all away
You just have to get up, get up, get up, get up
You don't have to change a single thing

You don't have to try so hard
You don't have to bend until you break
You just have to get up, get up, get up, get up
You don't have to change a single thing

You don't have to try, try, try, try
You don't have to try, try, try, try
You don't have to try, try, try, try
You don't have to try

You don't have to try, try, try, try
You don't have to try, try, try, try
You don't have to try, try, try, try
You don't have to try
You don't have to try

Mm, mm

You don't have to try so hard
You don't have to, give it all away
You just have to get up, get up, get up, get up
You don't have to change a single thing

You don't have to try, try, try, try
You don't have to try, try, try, try
You don't have to try
You don't have to try

Take your make-up off
Let your hair down
Take a breath
Look into the mirror, at yourself
Don't you like you?
'Cause I like you

As I listened to the song, I wrote down words, feelings and adjectives that I thought about when listening to it. This then helped me to understand the narrative that I would use for my video. Initially, I was thinking of focusing on expectations on ways that women should look especially the impact of social media. I would like the video to consist of women with mise en scene expressing themselves as “appropriate” for photographs to be taken of them and posted online. As the the song progresses, the process of them getting ready would almost be undone. The would then end up as themselves, comfortably in their own skin as they are. This would highlight how people do not need to change their appearance for social media and expectations of others and the media. I would choose to have one main woman in the video, who would represent the star, at the beginning of the video she would be presented as how we would expect a star to be presented, with her hair and make up fully done as if she was going to perform. She would do most of the singing, however on occasion some of the other women may also sing. They would sing in different locations, I would like to use the Black Studio for some of the filming, just to keep the focus on the star and not the background, but throughout the video I would like this to expand to highlight how woman can go anywhere without makeup and demonstrate my message.
