Sound Design

To have a better understanding of how sound and music can effect the audience I closed my eyes and listened to the track below. On wordle I wrote down 15-20 words that came to my mind whilst listening to it, this is refereed to as synaethesia.

Synaesthesia refers to the process when senses provoke other senses into action for example being able to hear colours, seeing tastes and feeling.

These are a few diegetic and non-diegetic sound effects and tracks that I could use for my thriller

To play the music you need to click on the track and then press play.

Draft 2 (Edit Including Titles)

Feedback

The feedback I have received is telling me that I need to add transitions so it doesn’t feel like a bad cut, I need to colour correct the whole thing to make the thriller darker and somehow cut out graffiti as it is too modern.

Based on this feedback I have added transitions onto the points said above and though I was not able to get rid of the graffiti I have placed a title to the left of it to distract the audience from it. I have also added a tint all over to colour correct.

Titles Design and Production

Out of all the title I prefer the third because it relates appropriately to my thriller without looking too posh or too modern. The second one is too bold and could be hard to read when placed into my thriller. The first one relates and works well with my thriller but is a bit too modern and might ruin the flow of the sequence.

Using adobe after effects I inserted the premiere pro video into the sequence so I could create titles over it. I put a title over where I wanted it to go (placement and timing) and changed the font, size and colour to fit my thriller. To make the titles fade in and out I went to the animate in and animate out section and chose the animation I thought was appropriate. To see which animations I thought worked I used adobe bridge.

Titles Research and Planning

This is a detailed timeline of the title sequence for the thriller Deadwood. It includes when different titles are shown, how the music changes and what is happening in the background whilst these titles are being shown.

These are two timelines Harry and I have done for research on two other film title sequences. I did 300 and Harry did Fury.

Order of the titles:

  • Writer – Jack Hughman
  • Producer – Jason Powers
  • Distributed – Working Title
  • A Garry Rice film
  • Actor – Adam Guille
  • Actor – William Jackson
  • Main Title
  • Actor – Natasha Yunan
  • Actor – Olivia Le Friec
  • Editor – Darren Sarre
  • Sound Design – Georgia Stockings
  • Costume Design – Jeffrey Jonson
  • Composer – Kevin McLoud
  • Music Supervisor – Gregory Male
  • Casting Director – Jack Jackson
  • Production Manager – Lin Howe
  • Visual Effects Supervisor – Silvia Silingo
  • Director of photography – Talia al Ghul
  • Makeup – James Harrison
  • Director – Aidan O’Rourke
  • Co-Director – Harry Grice

This order of titles are important to my thriller as it gives me the idea of how I want them to be put into my thriller. It’s might not be the exact order of my titles however I know what titles i’m going to be putting into the opening sequence. Titles are important to a film as they can give the audience an idea of what the film will be like.

Draft 1 (Edit Including Transitions and Filters)

This is my first proper Draft for my thriller. It includes for refined edits so there is a story that is noticeable and not just a narrative.

This is some feedback I have received for my thriller.

Good points:

  • Uses great mise-en-scene
  • Has a good continuity
  • Good match on action
  • Doesn’t brake 180 degree rule

Bad points:

  • The boat scene needs to be shorter
  • There is an obvious relationship between the characters
  • Some shots are slightly too long
  • There needs to be a transition at the end

When re-editing my thriller I will take these points into account and edit accordingly. For instance I will make the boat scene shorter and add a fade to the ending.

Editing Process

These are a few images from editing fully my thriller, they will include edits I used a lot of.

Cutting: Throughout the editing I needed to cut out a lot of useless film or parts that would not make sense. To cut I just dragged the video into the left box and cut it down to what parts I wanted.

Removing Audio: As there is no dialogue in the thriller I had to remove the audio tracks which will be replaced with music later. To remove the audio I rick clicked on the audio track, clicked delete audio then chose which track I didn’t want and pressed ok.

These editing techniques will help me out a lot when adding all the high tech edits.

Rough Cut (Basic Edit of Narrative)

This is the Rough cut of my thriller film, it isn’t edited apart from putting things into narrative order.

There are a lot of shots in my rough cut that I will need to re-record, the main reason for this was there were too many modern objects in the background of shots, the wind was also horrible where I was recording, so a lot of the shots feel shaky (even though I has stabilizers). There is meant to be a rowing scene that I will be putting into my final product. Our actors did great though despite the bad weather. There were a few times it felt like be broke the 180 degree rule.

For the re-filming:

  • I need to make sure there are no modern objects in the shot
  • To have the camera steady the entire time
  • To trt not to break the 180 degree rule

Shooting Day Evaluation

These are some pictures from our shooting day, there is also a commentary on how we found filming.

We went out on two separate filming days to get our shots. Day one was with our actors to record the main scene, we went to castle cornet. The second day was with Harry’s uncle to record the boat scene, we went to Rocquaine  that will be adding to our draft 1. Day 1 didn’t go as expected because of the weather and the surroundings, day 2 went great, we got all the shots we needed and more just in case.

Weaknesses:

  • The weather was horrible, the wind was so strong that (even with stabilizers) the camera was shaky.
  • There was a lot of modern objects in the background which we will need to re-film.

Strengths:

  • The mise-en-scene was very good and worked with the time based the thriller in.
  • The acting was brilliant even though the weather was horrible.
