DRAFT 4 – MUSIC VIDEO

Here is draft 4 of our music video, after re-watching it over with the group we have decided what went well, and targets for improvement for our final draft. This is vital for producing our work, as understanding what is working well for the group but also what could be improved will ensure our work is to the standard we all want it to be.

TARGETS FOR IMPROVEMENT:

  • Near to the start, have clips of aimee looking at the therpist, revert back to the therepist and then aimee agian. This will create continuity / strengthen their relationship for audience consumption
  • Remove the part where the performers are in the distance (field)
  • Try and use some canted angles to engage the audience
  • Lukash on hill – have some similar edits post production to make it more interesting and engaging for the audience
  • colour correct- To signify the different times in relationship- There is a sudden swap from the lovely memories to something going wrong in the relationship – colour correct? To signify the different times in relationship
  • In order to create dynamic, cut between the long shot of Aimee throwing, to Aimee throwing the clothes towards the camera
  • Zoom in to Aimee throwing the clothes to emphasise a difference in shot distances
  • Shot of therepist nodding is too ling– shorten it
  • Scale on to Lukash lip syncing ‘Flo where did you go’
  • Remove the pan of the bedroom as has no meaning
  • Scale in on Lukash lip syncing in the greenery
  • Continuity is wrong at the boat scene – needs to be Lukash running over the crossing then Aimee’s point of view, then have Aimee run across
  • Zoom in to Aimee rocking at therapy at the end

WHAT WENT WELL-

  • Aimee staring at the camera in the beginning of the video is effective as it creates a greater connection between the performer and the audience
  • The Editing to the beat is accurate and allows the audience to remain involved throughout
  • The change in storyline when the suitcase is being packed adds attentiveness for the audience – the bag packing sequence works very well
  • The edited to the beat clips of Lukash on the dirt hill are effective and show a variety of techniques in relation to editing to the beat
  • The shots of Aimee lying on the bed after Lukash has gone communicates her loneliness to the audience well
  • The mid shot at the end of the video adds continuity to the entirety of the video

SHOOT 5- REFLECTION

The lovers quarrel as the male model was packing up his suitcase was our last shoot, this was filmed at my house. We aimed to get many shots of the two while he was packing, but the lighting coming through the window made it hard for us to get a wide variety of shots like we wanted.

We got many shots of her throwing clothes at him, crying, grabbing his arm and slamming the door. This was to highlight the emotion of the girl being sad and angry at him leaving, but also him showing no emotion about the situation.

WHAT WENT WELL-

  • Good footage of Zip being done up and girl grabbing his arm.
  • We filmed her doing the same action several times at different angles.
  • Lots more close ups than previous shoots.

TARGETS FOR IMPROVEMENT-

As we hope this is our last shoot, were now aim to really knuckle down on then editing of our music video and flow all the clips together to be visually pleasing, but also have the narrative making sense to the target audience and viewer.

SHOOT 4- REFLECTION

For this shoot, we were able to shoot at two different locations, one being the ferry terminal and the other at the motor cross track up at Pleimont. As we decided that we needed more performance shots, we headed back to the location where there big blue bus was in our previous shoot, however we did not realise that it had been moved away. Despite this, and the wind, we got some clips which were much better than our previous performance shoot. Next we headed to the ferry terminal to add to our narrative of the main male character leaving the girl to move away. We had not planned this part of the shoot very well, as by this point the camera was running low. We still managed to film everything we wanted to, and feel like we portrayed him leaving and her chasing him very well.

WHAT WENT WELL-

  • Performance shoot location fitted in better with the rest of our music video.
  • Have a large variety of clips of him lip syncing the song.
  • The lighting has improved majorly due to planning on a day with better weather.
  • The narrative storyline is coming together and is making more sense as we get more clips.

TARGETS FOR IMPROVEMENT-

  • Edit some of the performance footage so that the exposure is darker and you can see the models face clearer and sharper.
  • Do one last shoot of the two models arguing.
  • Include a variety of different angles of the model doing the same action.
  • Organisation RE the camera.

SHOOT 3- REFLECTION

As we realised the narrative needed more meaning and a personal  connection to the viewer, we decided to add in this shoot, where our main female character is at a therapist appointment, reminiscing about the past relationship she had with the main male character who later ends up leaving her to move away. In order to make the feeling of a realistic therapy session, this shoot took place in a casual meeting room within our school, we placed books that you would find within a therapists office and adjusted the chairs to look as if they were in a natural face to face appointment.

We also added an additional model to our music video, to play the role of the therapist. She was wearing very smart clothes but had a very warm feel to her due to her body language and facial expressions. Our main character model also was wearing smarter clothes than usual as we wanted to portray her growing up yet still not moving on from the situation.

WHAT WENT WELL-

  • we used shots that were more personal and close up to the model, really tightening the emotion shown.
  • The variety of angles we used has improved majorly.
  • We have started to use transitions more ( pan of books and therapist, Zooming into mirror)
  • We used clever shots such as zooming in from behind the model into the mirror that she was looking into. (we managed to keep the person filming and the camera out of the frame)

TARGETS FOR NEXT SHOOT-

  • we could potentially film more therapist clips as we think it worked really well with showing the emotions of our model.
  • include more transitions as it really helps link the footage together.
  • Take more clips as we always have less clips than we think we do.

MUSIC VIDEO – DRAFT 3

Below, is the third draft of our music video. Overall, our music video has improved and we can visually see this as we look through the different drafts of it. Due to adding another shoot into this draft, the narrative is coming together and making more sense to the viewers. Despite the clear improvement of our music video, towards the end is messed up due to the sound saving wrong on our drive. We will have to fix this mistake, but also work on improvements for our next and final draft.

To ensure that our music video is to the best of our ability, we showed our peers in the class, and asked them to assess the work we have done so far.

PEER ASSESSMNET:

  • good mise en scene that fits the upbeat vibe of the song.
  • Interesting use of editing to the beat.
  • nice locations used.
  • good emotion on actors face, in narrative.
  • Just need to fill in the gaps and fix the bit at the ned which is off.

TARGETS FOR IMPROVEMENT:

  • trim the song so that the amount of footage we have fits into the music without any gaps.
  • Add in more editing to the beat of the music as it keeps the feeling of the song up and interesting.
  • Adjust some of the narrative clips so that the storyline of it fits in well alongside the performance clips.
  • add effects onto the clips so that you can easily tell the past from the present.

SPECSAVERS FEEDBACK

During one of our lessons, we had the privilege of having two men from the creative sector of the company Specsavers come in and give us feedback after watching our music videos. This was very enlightening for us a group and we now have new knowledge that will enable us to make our music video even better.

  • Layers– to fully organize the editing of our music video, we now know how to move each clip from a certain shoot onto a separate layer, with a color selected for that shoot and a label.
  • Lumetri color– this tool allowed us to change the effects on selected clips, it will also allow us to copy and paste this effect onto other clips. Which will help us to have a clear difference between our narrative shoot and performance.
  • Curves- adjusting the curves ensured that we could blend our clips with a certain color.
  • Levels– by changing the different colors’ levels, we can now brighten and darken that specific color on the clip.
  • Key frame– by using the key frame, we can now add in work we have done on photoshop, over the top of our clips, in the sector that we want. For example, the vintage cam recorder effect is not on our premiere pro, so we can now draw this onto photoshop and put this over our clip.

TARGETS AFTER FEEDBACK

  • Organization– we would like to create shot lists for every new shoot we do, and include the equipment that will be needed.
  • Connection- use a wider variety of shots which will bring connection to the viewer.
  • Story– create a mini story within the narrative so that it gives a clearer understanding.
  • Contrast– have a filter over either the performance or narrative clip so that their is a clear difference between the two.

MUSIC VIDEO- DRAFT 2 ASSESSMENT

INSERT DRAFT 2 HERE

For this second draft of our music video, we have added in the clips from a recent shoot we did where our female model is in a therapy session. It is understood by the group that we have a lot of footage to cover, in order to create a full music video to the best of our ability. The variety of angles we used has improved dramatically and made the clips much more personal, which was important to notice especially with the nature of these clips being in a ‘therapy session’.

Despite us being proud of the work we have produced in this short timeframe, there is room for improvements, especially when it comes to the performance clips and the story part of our narrative. In our next draft we hope to improve this, our next shoot will enable us to do so. During this shoot we aim to be more organized and have a story board already planned out.

After analyzing this previous students work, we have come to realize that we need to use more interesting camera angles, especially when it comes to the performance clips, as it creates a more up beat and interesting aspect to the video, which ours currently lacks. The video could also include camera transitions that will move from one clip to another, this will be visually pleasing and allow the clips to flow easier. Utilizing how we edit our clips to suit the narrative will make it easier for the audience to understand the storyline.

TEACHER FEEDBACK- SCREEN CASTIFY

WHAT WENT WELL-

  • We have a variety of extreme close ups which show the personal side to our filming.
  • The opening clip where our model breaks the fourth wall, works well as it connects with the audience and gives a cheeky vibe off.
  • We have edited some of our clips to the beat of the music which uplifts the feel and pace of the music video.
  • The low angles used where the male is on the hay bale works well as it changes up the lighting and angles of the music video and breaks up the intense beats to the music.

TARGETS FOR DEVELOPMENT-

  • Include more footage so that we have a complete music video.
  • Play around with the background color of some of the clips.
  • Include more clips of close up moments of model in therapy session.
  • Have the female model break the fourth wall later on in the music video.
  • When re-shooting the performance clips, not just have him singing straight into the barrel of the camera.
  • Crop down some of the clips so that bushes and trees aren’t in the frame.

MUSIC VIDEO DRAFT 2 (INCLUDING SHOOT FOOTAGE)

For this second draft of our music video, we have added in the clips from a recent shoot we did where our female model is in a therepy session. It is understood by the group that we have a lot of footage to cover, in order to create a full muisc video to the best of our ability. The variety of angles we used has improved dramtically and made the clips much more personal, which was important to notice especially with the nature of these clips being in a ‘therepy session’.

Despite us being proud of the work we have produced in this short timeframe, there is room for improvements, especiallly when it comes to the performance clips and the story part of our narrative. In our next draft we hope to improve this, our next shoot will enable us to do so. During this shoot we aim to be more organised and have a story board already planned out.

SHOOT 2 REFLECTION – (NARRATIVE)

Shoot 2 was our first narrative shoot, we chose to shoot this during our summer break, as we knew it ensured that we could find a day where the weather would be on our side. Initially it was windy during the shoot, so we relocated to an area where it was sheltered and our shots would not be affected by the wind.

This shoot is going to be the clips in our music video where the main female character has flashbacks to her teenage years and the easy life she had that was taken for granted. The shoot consisted of our two models, both in the age frame we were opting for. The Mise en scene of our shoot worked very well, both models were wearing very casual but edgy styles, the monochrome outfit of the color green on our female model represented the growth that she was going through, but also her connection to nature at the time (which she does not feel she has, as she grows older), the quirky pattern also highlights her youth, which later on in our music video will contrast to when she has grown up.

WHAT WENT WELL?

  • The mise en scene fitted the narrative of the music video well.
  • We worked well as a group to get a variety of shots with different angles.
  • We ensured that we had good lighting for the shoot.
  • The location for the shoot fitted the vibe of our music video.

WHAT WENT WRONG?

  • There was not a clear story within our footage.
  • Overall organisation.
  • Needed to cover more footage during the shoot.
  • A wider variety of angles could have been used.
