Music Video Conventions

A music video plays a huge role in the promotion of an artist and their music which is why most artists will put most of their money into. A music video is like a long advert which can get people talking and create a star image for themselves. As Richard Dyer would claim that a star must appear extraordinary to the audience but at the same time must also seem ordinary so a music video is an effective way in creating this paradox star image. Looking at different music videos throughout my life as a media consumer I have identified that there are many music video conventions depending on the genre. One convention for example is most videos are usually have a duration of around 3-4 minutes however we are seeing a change in this with newer videos being much shorter as a result of social media like tiktok. There are 3 types of music videos: narrative which is solely story based with no lip syncing and the artist usually isn’t seen, performance which is a video with no narrative just a performance lip sync from the artist and then a mix of both which is the most common. There is also 3 types of narratives a music video may have: amplification narrative, a narrative which is inspired by the song but adds a different element, disjunctive narrative which is were there is little to no relation to the song and illustration narrative which is a narrative that very closely reflects the lyrics. Below I anylsed 3 different types of music videos looking into how the star and genre is represented.

Thinking forward, looking into professionally made music videos gives me an insight on how the use of mis-en-scene and narrative can represent the star/stars in many different ways which will be very useful for when I begin to look into planning out my music video. I now can begin to think about how I would use narrative and mis-en-scene to reflect my genre and how I want to construct my star image.
