Sound Design

Intro: We now have to research sound and design our running order for our own thrillers sounds, this will include folie sounds. We also listened to a track called ‘Panic Music’ we made a word it out document to describe the sound and what we could hear and felt while listening to the music.

Here is the music we listened too to create the word it out document full of emotions.

Here is our running order for the sound that we will need to obtain. Non dietetic and dietetic. This list will also help us in what we need to record and what we must find and edit.

Her is some sounds that are associated with a conventional thriller. We looked for some spooky drones as well as some folie sounds and sound stabs.

Draft 2 (Edit including titles)

Intro: Here is our draft 2 which includes all of our titles. We have had feedback from another member of the class telling us what is going well and what we could maybe change in their opinion. We have disused their feed back as a group and talked about what we are going to change.

Feedback Summary –

The colour of the font works really well with the background colours as we have gone for a dark blue look. When the titles disappear and move with the shots this is also good and it makes it unique. The animations of the titles are good especially the submerged one. And the positioning of the titles are good too. Some of the titles just pop up and they need an animate in so continuity is good. The sizes of the titles are also different which may take away the tidiness of some of them.

Self Assessment –

What is going well:

  1. We have made some titles so Nick walks in front of them which makes them look like they are part of the shot.
  2. We have made the titles disappear at the end of the shots which is effective and unique.
  3. We have used a sans serif font which makes it fit in with the style of an old creepy thriller. The red also compliments this.

Targets to work on:

  1. We need to make sure all the tiles have the same animate in and out so our continuity is right.
  2. I think we need to make some of the titles last for a little bit longer and some go to quick especially the submerged one.
  3. We need to ensure that all of our titles are the same size so it looks professional and polished.

Titles Design and Production

Intro: Once we had researched titles on existing films we then had to start looking to create our own. We looked for some different fonts that we liked and got it down to a short list of three. We then had to create the titles in the correct order to do this we used Adobe After Effects.

Ww decided as a group that we liked Medusa Gothic best. (This is the second image). We felt that this fitted best with the look of the film we where going for. This font has a modern look but still looks mysterious and spooky.

Adobe After Effects and Titles Design:

In this photo I am using the Rotobrush tool, this is used so we can make the character walk infant of the title. This is like sending it to the back, this makes the titles more involved in the scene.

This photo is showing keyframes, this is used for how long the title takes to animate in out or for how long the title is on screen for. This is important as the title needs to be on screen for long enough so the audience has time to read it. This tool allows us to change it and adapt it to the exact time we want.

This photo is showing the corner pin tool. This allows us to skew into the shot. This means it will look like it is laying flat on or against something. It allows us to push the title into the shot. It creates depth in the shot.

This photo is showing different animations. These are the animations that we can use to animate in and out our titles. This makes the titles run smoother so they do not just appear then disappear.

Titles research and planning

Intro: We are now doing our research into titles. We looked at professional work to find out in exactly what order the titles come in. Once we completed this research we made a running order for our own titles.

Draft 1 (Edit including transititions and filters)

Intro: This is our draft one of our thriller, we have added filters and transitions. This also includes our first colour correction. We have also go feed

Feed Back:

Ewan Nicolle
Technical: I think to capture the character’s emotions in the opening scene, which are important since there is little action, you need to use more close-ups especially near the end to make it more frantic (?) and suspenseful. Also some of the close-ups feel like they’re on screen for too long and therefore the scene could lose suspense. Particularly for when he’s near the water and taking off his clothes and items, I think the phone shot could be shorter. Some of your shots I feel could be more steady even though they’re moving with a shoulder mount. Continuity: There are some obvious errors when moving from one shot to another because the weather changes, but I’m not sure if that’s intentional to show time passing, and if so then maybe add a transition to show that. I think there could be more eye-line matches for the character as they look around them whilst walking down from the bench, and it would also be an opportunity for close-up reaction shots. Genre: I think if the editing was faster then the film would have more thriller features, however at the moment the features aren’t suspenseful and rely too much on enigma, in my opinion. The story however is that of a thriller because it incorporates mystery into a silent story told with pictures.
George Robert
Some very nice cinematic shots throughout the Thriller however it took a long duration of walking to get to the main part. The dollying and tracking was very good. The walking could be cut down to a shorter length to make it more interesting however I like the idea of a slow beginning and build up. It would of been great to see the body floating and or shown as a blur under the water towards the end. The sequence of him taking his shoes and socks off could also be cut down.
Nabiha Rahman
Feedback: Great continuity and it makes good narrative scene. However in the start the camera shaky when showing the sea but the shots were great, I liked the ending where he fall into the water but it would of been more interesting if you showed the body floating. Like in previous comments, I think too that there is too much walking making it a bit boring. Though overall I like the variation of shots and the story line. Well done!
Carlos Oliveira
There is some very good shots in this such as the tracking shots and the narrative is well thought of and shown clearly throughout. There are also a good variation of shots but close ups could be used more frequently, however i think there’s way too much walking. It gets to a point where the constant walking drags a bit too much and some shots take too long. The whole concept doesn’t keep me on my toes as the thrill factor could be improved by increasing the pace of it all.
Response to feedback:
We need to include more close up’s near the end to create more tension, some of the shots last for too long especially the one of nick walking and the camera is dollying him. The light and weather changes in the shots due to filling on two different days. There is no eye line matches so this would be quite nice to get some different shots and to possibly film some more reactions.
Targets:
  • We need to make some of the shots shorter.
  • We need to include more close ups
  • We need to try and colour correct more to make the shots look all the same.

Editing Process

Intro: We are learning practicing and developing different editing techniques we have used the basic tools such as how to make a cut how to split a video and transitions when doing the other small tasks. We have now also learnt other devices such as colour correction how to put motion into a frame and how to add a strobe to the shot.

This picture is showing the fast colour correction wheel. This changes the saturation of a shot to the colour you choose, we have chosen as a group to go with a dark blue colour to make it fit in and look like a thriller.

This picture is also colour correction but this is the level of white and black is in it. You have the imput levels for the and black and white and you also have the output levels for it too. This means you can get the shot darker or brighter. This will also have a big impact on shadows too.

This picture is showing video effects and transitions. The effect that is applied is called a cross dissolve and it will smoothly fade between two shots. We have put this at the start of our thriller so it will fade in from black. This is an effective transition and is used a lot during a montage, it shows that the time has passed.

This picture is showing the motion controls. This means we can add movement to our shots. we can apply this over time for example we could add a small dolly in or add a pan across the shot. This works well with creating more tension.

This picture is showing the strobe light effect. we have tried to apply this to our final shot to give it more tension. A strobe is a fast flash usually white.

This is our timeline where we have used the razor tool to chop up our timeline to create black moments. we have also overplayed some videos too.

This shot is showing the cut tool. this tool is how to edit the raw footage, with this we can cut the start and cut the end. we can also take footage out from the middle too.

Additional planning documents for shoot 2

Intro: This is our shot list for shooting day two. Some of the shots from this list is the same as the others because they need to be re filmed however some of the angles and distances have chanced. Not much in our meeting agenda has changed but some details are slightly different such as our key moments which needed to be filmed.

Rough Cut (Basic edit of narrative)

Intro: This is our first draft of the thriller, the reason for doing this is to check if we have enough shots and to make sure that our continuity is right.  I think for our first draft this is  good.

What is going well:

  • Our continuity is right and it all makes sense.
  • Our footage is of a good quality so this will make it easier to change and make even better.

What needs to be improved:

  • Some of our shots are not great, we will need to re film these when we film again.
  •  We need to improve all of the jump cuts we have to make it flow a lot better.
  • Our holding a shot steady is not great as although we used a tripod because it was windy that was making the tripod wobble, we should have used something to weigh this down.

Targets:

  • We need to colour correct everything and make all of our shots look the same otherwise it looks odd.
  • We will need to steady our shots so they are not as shaky and it looks more professional.
  • We also have to rotate the shots that are not straight, this is key as you can see quite a few horizons and they are key to keep straight.

Shooting Day Evaluation

Intro: Our filming day on a hole was very successful. We managed to shoot all of our shots and we have a wide range of different shots such as close ups extreme long shots and mid shots. With most of our shots we filmed them twice but we did not have enough time to do this for every shot.

What went well:

  1. We completed all of our shots and did not miss any out.
  2. Our group worked effectively together we all took turns to film and we each inputted ideas.
  3. We have got lost establishing shots which we will be able to use for our titles we specifically looked for shots in which we though would be good to use.

What did’t go well:

  1. We did not have much time so we where very rushed.
  2. Some of our shots where not great quality and we did not notice this until we got back to school, some where blurred and others and a wonky horizon also the wind was blowing very hard so the tripod was wobbling a little.
  3. We lost the sun at the end of our shooting day and this was our only source of light so this made it hard with our last shots.

Targets for next time:

    1. I think we need to plan our time better as we almost did not get all of our last shots.
    2. I think it would have been a good idea to go on location first before we film so we didn’t have to look for spots to film or to film from.
    3. We need to watch our shots back after filming them to make sure they are right, this would have made us notice they where wrong so we could have re shot them.
    4. Finally we should have waited the tripod down so it was not shaking as much.

This is us filming the final fall, we are all in position and checking that all of our camera and filming.

Risk Assessment

Intro: In this task we had to make a risk assessment for our filming day on location. A risk assessment is a document explaining all the risks we may come across when we are on location and how to minimise them as much as possible. Our biggest risk was the water because we where around the water all day. Nick was also entering the water so this was a big risk. To make this risk as small as possible our teacher has qualified as a life guard so he had to be present when he went in. We also had lots of towels how drinks and a warm pair of clothes ready for Nick when he came out.
