Shot List

Intro: In our groups we had to create a detailed shot list, this is a list of all the shots we will take on the filming day, this includes what angle distance and what action is happening in the scene. A shot list is important to have while filming because you won’t have to think about what comes next and how to do it, it will already be written in front of you. Finally providing your shot list is right it also means that you will not miss any of your shots.

Storyboard

Intro: Our group now has to complete a detailed storyboard, this will explain what is happening in chronological order and it will also show all the different camera angles, distances, continuity and help to visualize the idea so everybody knows what they need to film. If a storyboard is good you should be able to give it to somebody and they should be able to film it. The reason for doing a story board is so it will help us on filming day and if we follow it we will not miss anything.

Visual Planning

Intro: In this task we had to make mood boards that included ideas that we could use in our thriller. These ideas where not discussed in the group and are our own original ideas. We then presented our ideas to the rest of the group. This was useful as it gave us all a chance to input on the project and we can also see other ideas other than our own.

On my story board I looked at various common thriller aspects, I found some locations that would be good, I also looked at some possible weapons props and costumes that could be used. One of my main ideas is to have someone kill themselves. I used the idea that they would be in a wedding dress or a suit and tie and that they where going to drown themselves.

Jonny’s mood board focused on the idea on someone getting murdered in a shop or butchers by a psychopathy. His idea originated from The Missing. Jon’s costume ideas where for the psychopath to wear a bunny mask.

Charley’s mood board focused on a chase. She wanted to create tension and suspense. This mood board mainly focuses on locations and what is happening during her ideal thriller opening.

Narrative Codes

Intro: In this task we looked and discuss different narrative codes within a thriller. To do this we looked at three previous students work and find where and what the codes were. The three codes we looked at was the enigma action and semi code. This helped us understand thrillers in more detail so we can use these methods in our own.

Audience Research

Intro: In our groups we had to adapt and change a survey that was given to us and send it out to a wide range of people. We have to ask general questions about what you might expect to see in a thriller and specific questions asking about what people thought of our idea. This helped us to identify our target audience as it told us who was watching a thriller and what they would expect to see. Our main audience is a female aged 16 – 25, we also found that most of them watch 3 – 4 films in a month. Most of them thought that the main character should be mysterious. We also had to make a fake Facebook account to show who our audience would be and what we would expect there personalities to be like.

Montage Edit

Intro: In this task we were asked to film and edit  a short montage in small groups. We were learning how a montage is structured compared to a continuity task.  Our criteria for this was…  1. Hold a shot steady 2. Framing a shot – Rule of thirds 3. Shooting a variety of shot distances.

Strengths and what went well in our montage:

  1. All of the success criteria was met
  2. Our music matched and complimented the montage
  3. We used a different range of shots

Weaknesses / improvements of our montage:

  1. I think some of our cuts happened too quickly
  2. Some shots are possibly too long
  3. We did not 100% stick to the story board.

Summary: In this task I have used some different editing techniques such as how to crop an image and i have also used and developed more skills in using sound. Doing this has made what I already knew solid. I can also use some of these skills in my final thriller as I can use a combination of montage and continuity editing so this has also prepared me more for that.

Film Industry research job line

Intro: We explored how a film gets from pre production to exhibition and exchange. To do this we looked at the jobs through every stage, I have found out that there are lots of jobs in each part of production but the producer oversees the entire process.
