Previous Students’ Work

Intro:  We have to look at a good high mark piece of a previous students work and decide which level to put it in and why, Level one is low and level 4 is high

untitled

Holding a shot steady – Upper Level 4: They held a shot steady when they did an over the shoulder shot with the girl washing the dishes.

Framing a shot – Upper Level 4: A clear example of this is when the camera tilts looking through the window looking at the girl washing the dishes. This is a high angle on the girl.

Variety of shot distances – Upper Level 4: There is a good variety of shot distances, I like the use of extreme close ups on the girls face and  the extreme long shots

Appropriate to task – Upper Level 4: It creates a sense of mystery and has a tense atmosphere the man walking around the house shows this, it also uses low key lighting at points so this makes it a thriller as most of the things you expect to see in a thriller are there.

Mise-En-Scene Selection – Upper Level 4: There was good costumes and a clear contrast between the man in black and the girl wearing normal everyday clothes. Lighting is also very good, a clear example of this is the candle lit staircase.

Editing for meaning – Upper Level 4: All of the editing makes sense, A good example of a good edit is when the girl is washing the dishes then the shots cut between the bloody hands and the hands washing.

Shot transactions – Upper Level 4: There are some very good transitions, A good transition is a quick fade from the boy looking at the girl through the window to the girl pulling on her hair.

Sound with images – Upper Level 4: A good sound with image is when the handle is trying to be opened this works very well, another good example of this is when the blood drips from the tap, this is also a match on action.

Using titles – Upper level 4: They used good titles and added them in in correct pages, they did not nook out of place and they fitted into the sequence very well. I like the titles most when they fit into the door at the beginning.

Camera presentations

Intro: In groups of two we were asked to create vines showing examples different types of camera shots, with different movement and framing. I learnt what different shots are and what effect they create. I also learnt that it is better to let the action fall into the shot rather than follow the action.

This is a mid close up from a low angle. This shot is often used to make the subject have power and feel intimidating. This also give the subject authority.

This is a long shot from a high angle. This shot is normally used to create the effect of vulnerability.

This is a long shot dolling the subject. This can be used to make the subject feel inferior and intimidated.

This is a long shot coming into a close finishing with panning the subject.

This is a mid close up from a high angle. This can be used to intimidate the subject and make them feel small.

This is a panning long shot from a high angle.

Shutter Island Analysis

Intro: I analysed Shutter Island I looked for things such as mise-en-scene, sound, narrative, character types, themes, camera, lighting, editing and titles. We know this is a thriller opening because it has all the ingredients for a thriller as well as the traditional things you would expect to see for example titles and some sort of sound track.

Thriller Expectations

Intro: We watched thrillers and we had to state what we thought would be in them and what was actually in them.

media

The thriller I watched was called Shutter Island.

In this thriller I expected to see:

A twist at the end, A mystery, A tense atmosphere, Low key lighting and complex characters.

What did I see in this thriller?

Yes there was a the end, we where misled throughout the film.

There was also a mystery throughout the film however the mystery that we had been shown was not the real one.

Yes in some scenes there was a tense atmosphere and it kept you on the edge of you seat.

In most tense scenes there was low key lighting, and it was sometimes raining. this is because most bad things happen in the dark.

Finally yes there where complex characters, the villein or who we thought was the villein was the doctor however he turned out in the end to be the good character helping his patient the entire time.

In general most key elements that you would expect to find in a thriller are there. This is a clear example of a thriller.

Preliminary Task

Brief: A continuity task involving filming and editing a character opening a door, crossing a room and sitting down in a chair opposite another character, with whom she/he then exchanges a couple of lines of dialogue.

This task should demonstrate match on action, shot/reverse shot and the 180-degree rule.

  • I have used the following camera techniques…. Medium close up, close up, long shot, wide shot, high angle and low angle.
  • I used these techniques to create a sense of mystery and tension.
  • I have learnt to use the following continuity editing rules… Match on action and the 180-degree rule and shot reverse shot.
  • I used these rules to… Are used to create space and show that a conversation was happening between the two characters. I did this with shot reverse shot and the 180-degree rule. I also used match on action and this for for a vary of clips, i used it for walking down the stairs walking towards the door, a close up of opening the door then finally walking into through the door.
  • I have learnt to use the following tools/techniques in Premiere Pro… I have learnt the set in and the set out tool, transition effects and effects on sound.
  • I used these tools to…cut out the parts that where no good for the final edit, this was the set in and out tool. i also used transitions for start my clip from black and to end with black, we also did a fade out with our sound effect at the end.
  • If I was to do this project again I would do some things differently,… I would add different sound effects so it sound more professional rather than just like a recording. I would also watch all of my footage before we finished our recording to make sure we have not missed anything and everything is right.
