A Front Cover Analysed.

Task:

I was tasked to analyse a professional music magazine cover. I chose to do ‘Billboard’ magazine as it was aimed at people similar to me so I thought it would be good fun to write about. Another element of the task was to match the Demographics and the Psycho graphics to the magazine I chose. Also Researched a bit about ‘Billboard’ and did a detailed textual analysis.

What Have I Learnt?

I learnt that colours are one of the most important elements of of a music magazine as the colours is what will grasp your initial attraction and if it’s not aesthetically pleasing then we will not even bother finding out what it is about. The other elements of Textual Analysis are also important as they all complement  each other.

If the font is unreadable then we will not want to purchase the magazine and if the language on the cover is poor or inappropriate it again could moves us away from wanting to buy it.

Conclusion:

I will use what I have learnt in my own work by using my new knowledge of the elements of a music magazine, mainly the colouring pallets, to produce a high quality and appealing poster. I will also be able to aim my magazine at a particular audience by using Demographics and Psycho graphics.

Audience Profiling

Task:

I was tasked to research the general audience of the ‘Q Magazine’ and then write about the demographics and psychographics to see if they matched the stereotype.

What Have I Learnt?

I have learnt that the audience can enter more than one category of psycho graphics and demographics. It is important for the company to chose a target audience and make sure they are producing products that fits certain people to ensure repeat purchase.

Conclusion:

So therefore I will have an more open mind for next time when I’m trying to figure which category/categories they belong in. Also I will research my target audience before creating products to sell.

The Design Features of a Magazine

  • I was tasked to annotate the typical conventions of a music magazine front cover, some of the elements included were:
  • Image
  • Captions
  • Masthead

I learnt that even minor conventions such as cover lines are important to the cover as they give the consumers something to read or even just look at so that they get the impression that its going to be interesting inside of the front page.

I will use what I have learnt in future research or work as I can now understand why each feature does have some importance to the cover.

Technical Camera Terms

I took lots of photo while exploring: camera angles,  shutter speed, aperture and depth of field. All of these different elements of camerawork all affect the meaning that the image communicates. We have loads of photos that did not come out as we wanted and the main reason for this was the ISO, you can tell this due to a lot of our images being very dark, some other issues we faced would included things like the photo not being in focus.  We had a handful of images which were successful in portraying the meanings and emotions we wanted, some of the emotions we wanted to create included: Loneliness, determination and inspiration.

This task has helped me learn how to manipulate elements of camerawork to create specific emotions and meanings behind photos.

My Image That Uses Mise-En-Scene For Meaning

I was allocated the Genre Psychedelic Rock. I found that this genre had the typical attire for rock music but was more colourful and full of life. The artist from this genre are represented as chilled and like drugs, the consumers of this particular music could be describes as relaxed and could look as if they are not in reality. The expectations of people who listen to Psychedelic Rock would be that they like to rebel and take drugs such as LSD and to be very relaxed and chilled people.

Some of the description words we received for our model included: Druggy, Hippie and Funky. These are the adjectives we wanted to improvise with the way we have represented our model. I think that our model fits in very well with other artists of genre due to his similar dress and accessories. Therefore I think as a producer I think as a producer I have made my model look very realistic as if he was a real Psychedelic performer who was about to go out on stage and put on a show.

In my contact sheet I have a wide range of photos with:little facial expressions, lots of facial expressions, good body language, good framing and bad framing. All of our photos are pretty good quality (Not Blurry) and I also think that I have captured the typical psychedelic rock artist during many stages of their concert or possibly just a general day at home. I could of used more extreme close-ups to show specific body parts, I could of also used different angle shots (high and low angle) to capture different angles on my model but I only used level angles.

This is my final photo, I have chosen this because I feel that this particular image captures the psychedelic rock genre really well. My models facial expressions and body language connotes relaxation and dazed  which is what we wanted the audience to realise. We have used a low-angles shot so we can see his facial expressions better while still showing his body.  This photo stands out from the rest because I think the way we wanted to portray my model is perfect and the framing in this image is better than the rest. Using Mise-En-Scene in these photos are really important so that consumers can work out what my model (genre) as they have nothing but the image to work this out. This will impact my planning and research for my magazine cover as I now have better understanding in picking out the elements of Mise-En-Scene in images and can reveal meanings behind images.

Print Media That Communicates Meaning.

I was tasked to analyse the Mise-en-scene for this music poster, so  I looked at the: Costume, Lighting and Colour, Acting, Make-up and Hair, Props and Setting. Using these aspects of Mise-en-scene it helped out to pick out the denotations and connotations from fine details.

I have learnt that at first sight you may not understand or figure out the connotation until you break the image down, for example: You may not think Rita is sexualised as she is not showing a lot of skin but her facial expression is very feminine and does in fact sexualise her.

I can use this is my own work because I can now understand how to create more meaning using Mise-en-scene so could therefore make a meaningful piece of media.

So… Im A Media Prosumer!

I feel that my collage fits the Blumler & Katz, Uses & Gratification because I have got examples on all of the sections, I have made sure I have a wide range from each section.

Social Interaction: For Social Interaction I have included: Snapchat, Facebook and  Whatsapp. The reason I have chosen these specific platforms is because these are what I personally use the most and I also think that they are tho most popular worldwide. They fit Blumler and Katz because they are all based around what us as audience do for the platform, for example Snapchat leaves it to us to add our own friends, post our own stories and send our own snaps.

Entertainment: For Entertainment I have included lots of films and TV programmes. For films and TV as a audience we do not do a lot for the media we just consume it and can occasionally give a review. Youtube is the only source of Entertainment I have included that the consumers do something for the media, for example people who consume videos on Youtube might also upload their own media onto the platform so they are therefore giving back to the media.

Personal Identification: I feel that apps and media platforms that are based around Personal Identification rely on the people who use their platform. Although the creators would of originally made the app they would need consumers of that app to start creating their own media and posting it on their personal page. For example if nobody Posted on Instagram then it would not be a popular app due to lack of media to look at. So I think that media that falls into the ‘Personal Identification’ category really do really on the Blumler and Katz theory.

Information: Media that is used for Information purposes does not rely on the consumers giving back to the media as they are usually giving the consumers new information they may not know about. I have used Sky Sports as they are a reliable source of information and have a broad range of sporting information so I watch Sky Sports frequently.

Conclusion: In conclusion the categories that rely on the Blumler and Katz theory the most are ‘Personal Identification’ and ‘Social Interaction’ as the consumers have the most control over what happens in these particular media categories. ‘Entertainment’ does require the consumers to have some input into their sites whereas ‘Information’ has little to none consumer input.

So… Hello Media Studies!

This year I’m hoping to learn to be able to look into various parts of media as a consumer and be able to look in detail at all of the connotations and Mise-en-scene so I can fully understand the purpose of the media better. I am also looking forward to the practical element of the course, for example I think that learning to create magazine covers would be very handy in the future as I will learn how to create something that could be used for jobs for if I was  needed to create a poster or anything of the kind.

The skills I already have is that I can slightly understand some connotations and Mise-en-scene but my knowledge is not as broad as I would like. Also I have worked on film magazines and teaser covers so I do know aspects of that side of media.
