Video narrative story/shot sheets

Above is the story board i have created showing how the narrative will weave into the music video as well as what type of shots to do. The conventions of Britpop mainly show no narrative however to make our video more interesting we have decided to add narrative. Story boards are very useful in productions as they highlight key scenes and what to do when shooting to give the best outcome as well as being organised, storyboards can also give inspiration for other ideas.

Shoot 2 Reflection (Narrative)

During the second shoot for our music video we shot some narrative for our music video to go along with the performance clips that we already had. We used a basic white studio setting so that our performer would stand out during these clips. In this narrative we wanted the performance star to act child like and play with some childlike toys. These shots have no lip syncing in them as we would want to put them in to mix up the ratio of performance based shots and narrative to make the video more interesting for the audience. Overall the shoot went well have we have a variety of shots to work with and edit into our video, however we would still like to add something else maybe some more narrative of our performer in a spacesuit to spice the video up a bit more.

Music Video Draft 2

This is the second draft of our music video, this draft shows the narrative that we’ve added however, this video needs to be worked on a lot more and here are some of our targets and what went well in the video…

What went well in our video…

  • More varied shots were added
  • Applied narrative shots
  • Developed our editing skills

What we need to change and work on…

  • More footage needs to be filmed
  • Setting change to gather more narrative etc
  • Add effects and more contrast of editing
  • More varied camera angles and shots need to be used

Teacher development targets…

  • More connection to the star through different shots, close ups needed to show intimacy
  • Play with the colours in the studio shots to make them more interesting
  • More edit to the beat – more pace in the edit
  • More of the narrative spaceman

Below is the screencastify of improvements from the teacher…

Music Video Draft 3

Above is Draft 3 of our music video having worked on some improvements…

  • During the editing process i worked on changing the colour pallet of the shots from the white studio as some of the feedback from the last draft sowed that these shots were not as interesting as they could be.
  • I also added some more shots of the spaceman narrative added a different frame speed to them to act more like flash backs and more nostalgic, i also added in some different shots of the performance as well to make it slightly more interesting.

Some comments from peers…

  • One peer mentioned that adding borders may look interesting
  • A few said that they really liked how the colours of the toys stood out to them
  • Lip syncing is slightly off in some shots
  • Add more interseting narrative as it is bland

Targets for improvement…

  • Add more edit to the beat and pace
  • Different shots in another location
  • More FX

Narrative Development

This document is one of the first steps of developing our narrative, this document helped plan out how are narrative will pan out. The narrative in Music videos develop throughout and follow a pattern of a beginning a middle and an end, usually an issue that arises and is solved. In technical terms this is called the Equilibrium, Disruption, Resolution and then finally the new Equilibrium. Most music videos follow this no matter what type of video whether amplified, disjunctive or illustrative. In our music video we have narrative but it is not as clear as a pattern of beginning middle and end, our narrative is a young boys toys slowly turning into more adult themed objects, so still a narrative of change but not as much of a pattern.

Shoot 1 Reflection (Performance)

Unfortunately I was very unwell at the date of this first shoot so I couldn’t attend the filming part of this performance however I have thoroughly gone over with the rest of my group of how it went and where else we next and we could improve. Throughout I will be reflecting as a third party stand point.

The shoot took place at the College of FE Delancey Campus in one of the classroom to further follow our narrative, this was also a good area to film due to the lighting, this is because there is not much natural light in the area that our performer was filmed in, this means that we can film at different times on different days without the lightning being completely contrasting in the shots.  The overall consensus that I got from this shoot is that overall it went well and both of the other members from my group made decisions on the different angles and taking turns taking the shots that we got, the only issue they expressed was that the performer was rusty on the lyrics which meant that they had to show him the lyrics during breaks in the shoots. So overall a successful shoot.

The targets that were gathered by this shoot is that we need more variety in different angles and shots as when it comes to editing it will all look very similar and we need more variety, we also need different locations to make the overall music video more interesting.

Music Video Draft 1 – Rough Cut

Overall, I think the shoot went well and my group members obtained some significant camera shots that work well with the style we want to portray. Our actor new all the words and lip synched well, as this is just a rough cut we experimented with lots of aspects of the editing to see what looks best.

As this is a rough cut we have some targets, these are…

  • Close ups to catch the emotion of the actor and have a more intimate feeling with the audience
  • Smoother transitions when editing and more interesting transitions
  • Actor playing guitar more accuratley as he doesn’t look like he’s actually playing along with the acuostics
  •  Cut out the 14 seconds of blank screen at the beginnng
  • Add more shots that have movement, the static ness of the shots can get boring and lose audience interest
  • Get more variety of shots as we only had 3 shots.
  • Close ups of the actor playing along the frets of the guitar
  • Actor occasionally breaks the fourth wall and comes out of character, we need to make sur ewe don’t include the parts of when this happens.
  • More pace of edit to the beat
  • Need to ensure no background clutter in the shots
  • Close ups and extreme close ups of singing, fingers strumming and toe tapping
  • Add side shots

Star Image – The Performer

The meta narrative is significant to any star as this is the image they use to represent to the audience, this helps in sculpting their values and beliefs which can ultimately link in with their audiences’ beliefs.

Overall the main purpose of a music video is to generate income. However there are other aspects that come from the music can benefit the artist these are such things as promoting the star as extraordinary as well as linking to there audience with their values and beliefs, this links into the theory of Richard Dyer’s Paradox of the star.

In this task I created a Canva to represent Oasis and to show how they portray themselves. One article that I found especially interesting is one that explains how Oasis nearly missed ginghams supernova as they were mistaken for fasicts, I find this article especially significant as I think it shows how different Oasis are and that they were mis judged due to their egotistical views and underlying cockiness, overall this explains the image of the Gallagher’s that most people know them for.

Finally this is significant research as this helps for how we want to portray our star throughput the performance aspect as well as how we will utilise Mise En Scene to portray the genre and narrative.
