IT’S ALL ABOUT THE STAR IMAGE!
To ensure our star image is portrayed effectively and meaningfully within the music video, we as a group collectively created a canva board based around the artist that performed out chosen music video, gathering background information to see how they’re portrayed as an artist over various different media texts.
HOW EMELI SANDE IS PRESENTED OVER DIFFERENT MEDIA TEXTS
In this task, my group gathered a variety of different media appearances that Sande has featured in, in order to gather a more detailed background on her star image. Included in the canva above is: news articles, magazines, TV appearances and quotes from various social media platforms all based around Sande. I have learnt that Emeli Sande is a member of the LGBTQ+ community, labelling herself as a bisexual. As she is very proud and open about her sexuality, her star image can be seen as a role model to look up to, showing confidence within herself and bravery around the topic, helping others in similar situations to be comfortable within themselves. Sande has openly said on the media that she’s “happier than ever” after coming out and talking publicly about her falling in love, portraying to her fans her strong feelings towards the topic, conveying her star image as powerful,leading and an inspiration.
Correlating to digitalisation within the music industry, Emeli Sande is able to present herself through various social media platforms, such as Instagram. In today’s age, social media plays a significant role in distributing content and interacting with your fans/target audience in an efficient and effective way. As a result of digitalisation, Sande has gained a total of 408k followers on her Instagram account, giving her the opportunities to promote her star image through this. For exampe, Sande used the hashtag ‘#brightersday2022’ not only promoting the release of her new song, but also promoting her work in a positive manner, widening her target audience, trying to gain a younger audience. Further more, Emeli Sande has collaborated with the well known artist Labrinth, producing the song ‘Beneath Your Beautiful’ gaining positive publicity for both artists, gaining a wider target audience and a positive impact on their star images.
Sande’s star image is usually portrayed as classy and graceful as shown in the images above, giving her star image a sense of wealth and importance with a sense of confidence and morality when she appears in vibrant, bright colourful clothes. This allows her star image to be portrayed as ‘real’ and inspirational, showing her true personality through the professionalism of the music industry, presenting herself as a good role model within the music industry.
HOW WE WANT OUR STAR IMAGE TO BE PORTRAYED
When we produce our own music video, we want our star image to be portrayed in a similar way to Emeli Sande, as well as including our own ideas/aspects. We want our star image to be represented in a positive manner in order for our brand package (music video, digipack and social media page) to follow the basic conventions of pop genre; bright, bold colours however, with a sense of emotion and mystery. Our star image will be represented through the repetoire of elements in our music video; mise-en-scene, low&high key lighting, editing, cinematography and camera angles. For our star image to be portrayed in an effective way and gain our target audiences attention, as a group we will follow the basic conventions typically found in the pop genre, ensuring our star image is portrayed correctly.
