Music Video 4 & Peer Feedback

Component 3, Music Video

Attached below is my draft four music video alongside feedback from one of my peers where I also gave feedback on her music video. We have peer marked other students music videos to not only gather feedback for ourselves, but to demonstrate we know what to look for/ what makes a music video good quality.

My partner’s feedback that she gathered from another student.

PEER FEEDBACK:

  • The performance compliments the narrative well
  • Shots are well framed and add meaning
  • Lip-syncing works well
  • Props/mise-en-scene in the performance works excellent

IMPROVEMENTS

  • The narrative only becomes clear towards the end of the video so maybe try and     add something to create a clearer connection with the audience
  • Maybe stabilise a few moving shots to add dimension

Focusing forward, I will use this feedback positively alongside my partners feedback to make the last few improvements on my music video, ensuring as many improvements have been made as possible.

Music Video 3 & Screencastify

Component 3, Music Video

Attached below is my draft three music video along side my teachers screencastify she did of our music video.

Attachment of my teachers feedback (screencastify).

Improvements to be made:

  • Swap the first two clips of Freya singing, start off with the close up
  • More screen time when putting the necklace on as it is an important part of the narrative
  • More screen time when getting the dress out of the wardrobe, feels a bit rushed
  • Have a close up of the model kissing the photo frame as the message isn’t clear enough
  • One of the clips is out of sync
  • The part scene feels a bit rushed, no need for the speed up
  • Have a close up of the model leaving the party, need to see more emotion to connect the audience

Focusing forward, now having feedback from our teacher we know what exactly needs to be improved. As a pair me and my partner have decided to re shoot several clips, ensuring we take into consideration these improvements that have been suggested.

Specsavers Feedback

Component 3, Music Video

During the process of making our music video, we have been lucky enough to have creative designers from Specsavers come in and have an over-look of our music videos, praising us and giving us constructive feedback on some improvements we could make.

Feedback from Specsavers:

  • Add in effects to make clips blend into each other/ensure music video runs smoothly
  • Add a filter/colour on top of certain clips to mask the ‘dodgy’ lighting
  • Re-shoot some close ups as there isn’t enough

Focusing forward, before our final draft me and my partner will take this feedback into consideration, ensuring we act upon these improvements.

Music Video Draft 2

Component 3, Music Video

Below is my draft two music video. When it comes to the editing aspect of our music video, as a group we have collectively decided to split into two pairs; Freya and Aoife, Me and Nila. As this is only a draft, there are plenty of improvements waiting to be made for future drafts.

When editing draft two, me and Nila discovered that she is stronger when it comes to editing the narrative and I am skilful when editing lip syncing which ensures we are both participating a significant amount when editing the music video.

WWW

  • We got a wide variety of footage for our narrative sequence
  • Our song choice helped convey our narrative sequence
  • Elements of mise-en-scene helped amplify our story line

EBI

  • We need to add effects/change the lighting of some cuts
  • We could do with re-shooting some cuts as the footage/camera angle isn’t right

Teacher improvements/comments

  • Add effects in the clip where the model opens the curtains
  • Try make more of an connection with the audience and performer
  • Edit to the beat more
  • Slower exist for the party shoot
  • Re-shoot putting slippers on (out of focus)

Focusing forward, me and my partner will act on this feedback, making any improvements possible to show understanding and growth when working with Premier Pro.

Shoot 2 reflection (NARRATIVE)

Component 3, Music Video

When our shoot day arrived, as a result of our narrative photo board and production meeting agenda, our day ran really smoothly. We managed to get all ‘money shots’ that we aimed for and a wide variety of different angled and distance shots. During the shoot, everyone took a turn with using the camera (apart from me as I was the actor), demonstrating we are all capable of using the DSLR camera.

WHAT WENT WELL:

  • We followed our narrative photo board, ensuring no essential shots were missed out
  • The lighting in our shoots was amazing, it helped emphasise the ‘professional’ feel to our music video we were after
  • The model’s performance was confident and mature
  • We managed to use our time effectively and not mess about
  • We gathered a wide variety of shots such as; ped, tracking shot, birds eye view etc.
  • Everyone in the group contributed a significant amount, resulting in the day running smoother

IMPROVEMENTS TO BE MADE:

  • In some shots, you can see the lights in the background which needs to be removed/cropped out
  • We need to gather some for extreme close-ups of the model to portray the narrative sequence more effectively
  • We need to ensure that when we are filming, people/objects can’t be seen in the background of the shot
  • In our second location shoot, our performer will need to show more emotion as the scenes are full of emotion
  • We need to get a shot of the performer walking out the door to go to the party as we were unable to shoot it at our second location

Focusing forward, we will take into consideration the improvements that can be made in our future shoots, ensuring our music video is the best of our ability and always aiming to have a wide variety of different angled/distance shots to help portray our narrative sequence as effectively and possible.

Video Narrative Photo Board/Shot List

Component 3, Music Video

To help create narrative sense, structure and themes within our music video, collectively we have created a narrative photo board/shot list to give us a guide as to what variety of shot distances we need, what aspects of MES need to be included in each shoot location and where to include cut to close ups.  The whole point of a narrative photo board is to film to edit, we need to ensure we have clips of a wide variety of distance and angled shots so that we have plenty of room to play around with shots, ensuring we get those ‘money shots’ and that every location shoot is of its best quality.

Featured in this shot list are detailed slides with what repetoire of elements will be conveyed in each location shoot (props, costumes, make-up) as well as specific shots and reaction shots.

Focusing forward, when it comes to shooting our video over the summer, we will refer to this narrative photo board so we know what exactly what to include in each location shoot, ensuring our music video is made to our best ability.

Production meeting for shoot 2 (NARRATIVE)

Component 3, Music Video

To ensure our second shoot runs smoothly and we use our time effectively, as a group we have made a PMA (production meeting agenda) to give us a guide as to what we need to prepare, bring and portray during the shoot. The whole point of a PMA is to ensure the repetoire of elements are portrayed to a good enough level that the music video’s brand image is sold effectively, giving the target audience what they expect.

Music Video Draft 1 – Rough Cut

Component 3, Music Video

During the post production process of our music video, we use premiere pro to edit our music video. Below is a rough cut of our first shoot, we did this to gather a rough idea of what it is like using premiere pro so our final cut will be the best of our ability. Once we understood the basics of premiere pro, we attempted to edit to the beat, match up the star performers lip syncing and use a wide variety of different angled shots.

WHAT WENT WELL:

  • The timing of our lip syncing matched up well with the music video
  • Our star image was portrayed effectively through emotion, affection and fun
  • When editing, we managed to edit to the beat and vary the screen time of each       clip
  • The repetoire of elements was portrayed effectively for our chosen genre       through costume, MES, lighting, direct mode of address and acting
  • Me and my partner are capable of editing our clips on premiere pro as we understand the apps programme
  • We managed to gather a variety of shots that will help keep the audience entertained when watching the music video

IMPROVEMENTS TO BE MADE:

  • In some of our clips the lighting could have been better, resulting in us having to use different tools on premiere pro to improve it
  • Even though our lip syncing matches up well, in some clips it is a tiny bit slow
  • Now we have the basic rough cut of our music video, we can begin experimenting with the different effects on premiere pro
  • To keep the audience interested, we need to vary the screen time of different clips
  • Ensure that the quality of our music video is good enough (use premiere pro to sharpen our clips)

Focusing forward, now we have the basics down of how to edit our music video, we have a rough idea of the success criteria for our next shoot (narrative), as we know what to avoid doing and what needs to be done to make our music video the best of our ability.

Shoot 1 Reflection (PERFORMANCE)

Component 3, Music Video

As a result of our organisation prior the day of our shoot, we managed to achieve all the ‘money shots’ we aimed for, as well as play around with different types of shots. As a group, we collectively ensured we had all the essential equipment we needed before reaching our location, (camera, tripod, costumes and props) guaranteeing that there is minimal room for mistakes.

Our day went quite smoothly, we didn’t forget any equipment or costumes and our setup ended up reflecting our chosen music genre very well. Our shoot included me, Freya, Nila and Aoife. During our shoot at Saints Bay, we managed to record the song fully from a variety of angles, including the ‘money shots’ and other fun angles. After our shoot at Saints Bay, we all drove in Freya’s car to Forte George for our second location shoot.

WHAT WENT WELL:

  • We successfully managed to shoot a variety of different shots (long-shot, mid-shot, up close, pan, low angle, high angle etc.)
  • Every member of the group cooperated appropriately
  • Our star image’s acting and costume helped portray our chosen genre effectively
  • We used our time appropriately and effectively
  • We had various locations at Saints Bay that we used to bring an element of     excitement to our video, ensuring the audience don’t get bored
  • When arriving at the shoot location, every group member came prepared, making our day easier

IMPROVEMENTS TO BE MADE:

  • In a few of our shots, you can see one of our group members in the background
  • We should of used the tripod more as some shots are shaky due to the camera being hand held
  • When shooting our narrative performance, we want to use more props as very little were used in this shoot
  • The lighting in some shots was too bright, washing out our star performer and resulting in us not being able to see the star performers face
  • Although all ‘money shots’ were takin, we could of done with getting a wider variety of shots
  • Because of the location of our shoot, the wind was very strong causing the performers hair to cover her face

Focusing forward, as a group we will collectively use this feedback as constructive criticism, knowing what to avoid in our second shoot and what to improve on. As our narrative shoot is indoors, a lot of these improvements won’t apply to this shoot however, being aware of specific improvements that needs to be made shows understanding of the criteria for a successful music video.
