Narrative Analysis of Pan’s Labyrinth

In our class we paired up and discussed the narrative of Pan’s Labyrinth to see how it compares with other typical narratives of the same genre. Below is a slideshare that Jacob and I create to show the differences and similarities of Pan’s Labyrinth.

  • In seeing the opening scene it is clear that the narrative of this film does not follow a typical or traditional narrative structure or story line. It begins with the ending of the film where Ofelia dies. A typical narrative structure would begin with an equilibrium which gives this film a unique and intriguing beginning.
  • Using narrative study we can distinguish who the characters of the theme conflict within this film are. Ofelia is the protagonist which implies that she is good, innocent and wants to always do the right thing whilst Vidal is clearly the antagonist of the film which signifies evil, dishonesty and wanting to do bad.
  • The themes of Pan’s Labyrinth are similar to the conflicts it has for example good vs bad innocent vs sinful and life vs death help us to understand the narrative and how it is structured because we relate these events that happen in the film to other films we have watched with the same themes.
  • The theme defiance could be seen as one of the main themes in Pan’s Labyrinth for example upsetting the faun and not listening to the fairies in Pan’s lair

Overall I think the theme defiance is one of the main themes in this film as Ofelia is seen many times throughout defying the fairies when she eats the food off of Pan’s table and also when she upsets the faun for not listening. These events contrast to the fact that she is supposed to be a princess however she is till a child and is acting in childish ways.
