Horror Cinematography & Sound Analysis

Today we are considering cinematography & sound design that is conventional (typical) of horror films.

We will watch Suckablood (BC Horror) in class and use this to consider how the cinematography & sound is typically ‘horror’.

Learning Intention:

Trying to understand how German Expressionist cinematic techniques were the blueprint for horror films.

Task

Answer the following question in a short video essay using captions.

‘Is the sound and cinematography in Suckablood (2012) Bloody Cuts Films conventional of the horror genre?’
Cinematography could include:

Framing & Angle

Composition

Movement

Lighting & Colour

Sound design and music:

Diegetic: Foley & Dialogue

Non-diegetic: Music & Sound Effects

The Video.

Make a short montage in We Video, which uses titles to identify specific features of cinematography and/or sound, which are conventional of horror.

Half the video should be on each micro feature. Make sure you use terminology to describe the techniques and link your analysis back to representation of the two central characters and the mood of the scene.

You should aim to find 4-5 examples of sound and 4-5 examples of cinematography.
