Effects and Titles

For our titles we used Adobe Affect Effects to edit each of our titles.

The first step we took in creating our titles was adding in all our titles in the correct order and positioning that we wanted them. We did this by clicking on the ‘T’ icon in the top left hand corner, to create a new text layer. This step was then repeated until all of our titles were added in.

We then decided for our are titles that we were going to stick with the colour theme of red and white throughout our thriller and that we are using the font Ryo Text PlusN for are titles expect for our main title. This is because at first we were going to stick with just red but on some of the shots the red colour didn’t show up so well. As well as that we changed the boldness of the titles so that they could be clearly seen.

We also created our main title ‘Murder, the best Medicine’. We did this by adding in a black background to out main title to make sure that it stood out from the rest of the titles. After that we move on to the animation and transitions of each title. We decided to use the decoder for the transition of the titles (excluding the main title), this is because we thought it best fitted with detective theme of our thriller. Another transition we used was the falling letter transition on the main title. We used this transition as we thought it best represented the action of blood dripping. We did this by going into Adobe Bridge and finding the falling letter effect which we then copy and pasted onto each of the words in our main title. For each for the transition we had to change the range selector, this is to make sure that the transition faded in and out at the correct time.

Font Designs

For our font designs we wanted to make sure that they would fit nicely in with the theme of our thriller, and also to make sure that it can be read easily.

Below is a document that I created to show the variety of different fonts that we thought about for our titles along with with the reason of why we either chose it or why we didn’t chose it.

Titles Research – 2 Case Studies

For our titles research we studied two opening title sequences. This was so we could see who was being credited, where certain roles were being credited e.g. the production company was credited first in the opening of the panic room and also if they had any significance/relation to the film.

The two films that we studied were Panic Room and Fury. By doing this research we have learnt that the main actors of the film are shown in the opening sequence for example, Brad Pitt in Fury. We have also learnt that the name of the film has the longest title which should stand out compared to the other titles. This information will help us when it comes to making our titles for our thriller.

Titles Research

For our titles research we looked at the opening sequence for the thriller ‘Gone Girl’. We had to analysis the running order of the credits, to see who was credit first and in what order each person is credited in. After looking at the order, we moved on to looking at the positioning, transition and animation of each of the titles, and how they linked in with the sound effects/music of the opening sequence.

Draft 1

Moving on from our narrative cut, the next step is to make a first draft of our thriller. For this to happen we had to cut large clips of our narrative cut, to reduce the amount of walking that we had in it. We had to do this in order to make the sequence have more scenes and also to make sure that it didn’t run over the time limit.

We then decided to change the flashback shots to black and white and use the colour correction effect to make the only colour in the scene the red dress that the girl is wearing, as we thought it fitted in well with our theme for the thriller.

Below is the first draft of our thriller

Below is the feedback that we got about our draft 1. In this document they write what they like and dislike about our thriller and also targets for it. From this feedback we will take in consideration the targets they have said and also what they dislike about our thriller, to make sure our thriller is the best that it can be.

Editing Process

We used Premier Pro when it came to editing our shots for our thriller. As it allowed us to achieve all the editing effects that we needed.

The first piece of editing we did for our thriller was to change the brightness and saturation of our shots of the detectives, this was done by using the ProcAmp effect as it allowed us to get rid of some of the colour in the shots but not all of the colour as we wanted the the clips to be a dull colour.

The next step we took was to use the colour correction effect. We used this effect to change the flashback shots into black and white. The reason why we did this was because  we wanted there to be a clear change between the present day and the flashbacks. We also used the colour correction tool to keep the red colour of the girls dress and also of the doctors mask. We wanted to keep the the red of the girls dress, to imply to the audience that she is in danger and also we thought it would be significant as the girl ends up being killed so the red colour to also represent her blood.

Another thing we did in our editing process was to add transitions between the flashback shots and the present day shots. We wanted to add in the transitions so that the audience would clearly know when they were going into a flashback and also when they were coming out of a flashback.

Additional Shoot Planning – Risk Assessment

Below is the document of our risk assessment that we created for our additional shot day. This is a very helpful document as it will tell us what risks will occur and how we could avoid the risk from happening.

Additional Shoot Planning – Production Meeting

Below is the document of our production meeting for our additional shoot day. This was used to help us know exactly who needed to bring each prop that was required and it also told us which actors we needed for the re-shoot.

Additional Shoot Planning – Shot List

Below is the document to our shot list that we used on our additional shooting day. This document was extremely helpful as it told us all the shots that we had to re-film for our thriller and also the location of which we need to re film the shot in.

Feedback And Targets On Rough Cut

From uploading our rough cut to YouTube, we managed to receive some helpful feedback on the different things that where effective and also the different things that we need to improve.

Comments-Draft-1-z6na7v

From the comments above the general thing that we needed to improve upon is the walking scenes, as they thought that there was too much walking. Our target from this will be to reduce the walking scenes by either cutting down the clips or to change the speed at which the detectives are walking.

Another feedback from our rough cut  was that some bits didn’t make sense. In order to improve upon this we plan to change the colour/lighting of flashbacks, so that people will be able to see the difference between them and the present day, which will hopefully make the shots make sense.
