Draft 3 Feedback

This is our feedback for our draft 3 which includes titles and some sound. For our feedback we decided to record some of our classmates to watching our draft three and say what they thought was good and bad about are titles and sound. They also said suggestions of how we could change it.

I find this was a good way of getting feedback as we got to see people’s reaction to our thriller when they first saw it.

Below is a our video for our draft three feedback

Draft 3 – Sound

After creating our titles we went on to adding in sound effects/music to our thriller. For this we used foley sounds that we created ourselves, downloaded copy write free sounds off of freesounds.org.

For our sound effects we try to make it so that they were perfectly in time with each shot when it appeared on the screen. The music behind the clips is an ambient backing track which includes: sharp strings, drum beats and high pitched noises. We decided to go for this track as it created an uneasy feel which would create discomfort for the audience, which is what our survey said about how audiences wanted to feel during the thriller.

Below is our draft 3 with the beginnings of our sounds

Sound Effects/Music

We used Premier Pro and Audacity when it came to editing our digetic, non-digetic and foley sounds.

The first step we took when it came to adding in our sounds was to add the main background music that will be heard through out our thriller. We reason we did this first was because we thought it would be easier for us to layer up all the other sound effects on top of our main track to make sure that it fitted in with it. After we add the main track we then added in the rest of sounds. We used the cropping tool, to crop some of the sound clips that we had, so that it fitted in perfectly with the shots. We then dragged these newly cropped clips into a new audio layer. We did this to make it easier to see exactly where each sound was in our sequence and also it made it easier when it came to re editing some of the sounds.

Another step we used when it came editing our sound/music was audio transitions. In most cases we used the cross fade transitions on certain sounds clips, as on some of the sounds we wanted them to either get louder or to get quieter.

audio options

As well as using Premier Pro, we also used audacity to help us edit some of the sounds. For instance we used audacity to change the pitch of the knife shing and also of the girl screaming. This is because we felt that the original sound clip was too high of pitch that it didn’t sound match the shots as best as it could of.

Foley Sounds

For our thriller we decided to add in some of our own foley sounds. Foley sounds are sound clips which have been created using everyday objects for instance, dropping a pile of books onto the ground to make it sound like a body falling on the floor.

Below are our foley sounds that we created, which we recorded using a handheld microphone.

Falling onto a wooden crate

image

We used Kit’s school bag to drop onto some planks of wood that we found. We decided to do this as we thought it was the best way to create the sound of a person falling onto a wooden crate.

Knife scraping

image

We used a coin to scrap fast across the the leg of a table to create a knife scraping  sound. This sound will then be used to make the noise of the knife getting picked up off of a metal tray.

Stabbing/squelch noise

 image

We made the stabbing noise by getting an orange and stabbing it with a pen. The reason we used an orange is because we thought it would make the most realistic sound of a person getting stabbed. Once we created the stab noise, we then went on to creating the squelching noise. We did this by squishing the orange that we had stabbed. We did this, as we thought that we could either use the sound for a footstep in a puddle or for when the doctor scrunches the cloth together.

Sound Moodtrack

We used freesound, soundcloud and YouTube when it came to researching and looking at sounds that we could potentially use for our thriller.

Below is my sound Moodtrack that I created, to show some of the music and sound effects that I thought would be relevant to our thriller. This Moodtrack includes both diegetic and non-diegetic sounds.

Ambient Music:

I think this piece of music will be very good throughout the thriller along with some layered up sounds to add some suspense and drama to our thriller.

Waves:

This will be useful for the beginning of the video along with some wind sounds. When the outside shots of the castle are shown.

Concrete Walk:

These could be useful for our thriller, when the detectives our looking around the castle, but we will need to make sure that they fit in and match the shots.

Girl Breathing:

The sound of the girl breathing could be used when the girl is running away from the doctor, to show that she is out of breathe and panicked

Soundscape Running Order

Below is our soundscape running order that we will use to know which sounds we will put in our thriller. We created this so we could see what sounds needed to be added in and also to see the variety of  diegetic and non-diegetic that will be used. It will also make sure that we have used the required amount of foley sounds that need to be included in our thriller.

Another way that this planning sheet is helpful is that it helps us to know where each of the sounds needs to come in and also what is the significant/reason of that sound being there

Synaesthesia

Synaesthesia is when one sense triggers another senses into action for example hearing colours, seeing tastes, feeling sounds. Synaesthesia is generally used in the film industry, to manipulating the audience to feel a certain way.

We listen to the clip above with our eyes shut so that the only sense we were using was our ears. After we listen to the clip we jotted down words that associated with what we just heard e.g. mystery, isolated etc.

Below is our wordle that we created with the words we thought the music portrayed.

Draft 2 Feedback

For are draft two feedback we decided to ask our classmates some questions about our thriller so far, these would include questions about our colour correction, effects and titles. We chose to film and present these interviews using vine.

This feedback was beneficial as it allowed us to see what people’s opinions where on our thriller. It also gave us the chance to receive some useful feedback that we could use to apply to our thriller.

Below are our questions along with the response

‘What did you think about the colour of our titles?’

‘Did you think our font choice is appropriate?’

‘Did you like our main title?’

‘Was there anything you would improve about our main title?’

‘Did our title animations work well?’

‘Did you think the positioning of our titles is effective?’

Draft 2 – Titles

For our second draft of our thriller, we used Adobe After Effects to create our titles. However before creating the titles we had to research the conventions of thriller titles, which we then applied to the creating of our titles.

We decided to stick with the theme of red and white through out our thriller for the titles. We then added in transitions and animations for the titles to make them fit in with our thriller and to make sure that the titles came in and out at the right time.

Below is our second draft for our thriller.

Effects and Titles

For our titles we used Adobe Affect Effects to edit each of our titles.

The first step we took in creating our titles was adding in all our titles in the correct order and positioning that we wanted them. We did this by clicking on the ‘T’ icon in the top left hand corner, to create a new text layer. This step was then repeated until all of our titles were added in.

We then decided for our are titles that we were going to stick with the colour theme of red and white throughout our thriller and that we are using the font Ryo Text PlusN for are titles expect for our main title. This is because at first we were going to stick with just red but on some of the shots the red colour didn’t show up so well. As well as that we changed the boldness of the titles so that they could be clearly seen.

titles 1

We also created our main title ‘Murder, the best Medicine’. We did this by adding in a black background to out main title to make sure that it stood out from the rest of the titles. After that we move on to the animation and transitions of each title. We decided to use the decoder for the transition of the titles (excluding the main title), this is because we thought it best fitted with detective theme of our thriller. Another transition we used was the falling letter transition on the main title. We used this transition as we thought it best represented the action of blood dripping. We did this by going into Adobe Bridge and finding the falling letter effect which we then copy and pasted onto each of the words in our main title. For each for the transition we had to change the range selector, this is to make sure that the transition faded in and out at the correct time.
