Previous Student’s Work

I have chosen to evaluate the opening sequence for Replicate.

Holding A Shot Steady

Through out the opening for Replicate they have used good steady shots and moving shots. They intentionally use unsteady shots when the girl is running as it is showing us her point of view.

Framing A Shot

They use a range of different frames which only showed the necessary things. They used a lot of close up shots at the start to put the main focus on the girl.

Variety Of Shot Distances

At the beginning of this clip they have used close up and extreme close ups to show the scared and the panic emotions on the girl’s face. However late on in they clip they start to use wider and longer shots, to give us a indication of the surroundings.

Appropriate To Task

I feel this opening sequence for a thriller is appropriate to the task, as it displays many aspects of a coventional thriller. For example it shows clear who the protagonist and antagonist is, which helps us to think of what the rest of the film could be about.

Mise-En-Scene Selection

The girls costume is ripped and dirty to show us that she is the antagonist of the story  as she looks weak and helpless. In contrast to the that the protagonist is wearing a suit jacket and smart clothing. This immediately makes us think that he has a lot of power over the situation.

Editing For Meaning

They have used zoom when editing as every time you see the antagonist the camera seems to be slowly getting closer towards them. This suggests that they may be following/catching up to the protagonist.

Shot Transitions

The shot transitions are very smooth, which are important when it comes to filming as it makes the story line more easy to understand because it isn’t jumping from shot to shot.

Sound With Images

Through out the opening sequence dramatic music is used. The choice of music fits very well with the clip and it sounds like a heart beat of someone who is scared/panicked, which is what the girl is. They also use the sound of heavy breathing to the shots where the girl is running away, this is used to put emphasis on the girls state.

Using Titles

At the beginning the title of the thriller is shown clearly as they use big bold white letters on a black background. However later on when they are displaying the other titles, some of them get lost in the background because they have used the colour white and the only thing that makes them stand out is the flickering of them.

The Production And Distribution Of Spectre

For this I had to research the production and distribution of the film Specter.

This task has enabled me to understand what goes on behind the scenes and also the type of statistics that go with this type of film.

Conception To Reception – Mindmap

Below is my mind map I made with Chloe Presland. For this task we had to list the different jobs that are involved in each section of production, Post Production, Production, Distribution, Marketing and Exhibition & Exchange

Analysis Of Shutter Island

I had to analyse the opening sequence for a professional thriller, to do this I had to analyse the macro and micro features seen in conventional thrillers. This has been beneficial as it shows us the features that occurs in thrillers, which will give us ideas for our personal thrillers.

Analysis of The Hole

I had to analyse the opening sequence of the hole, by looking at the different macro and micro features normally seen in conventional thrillers. This is useful for the preparation of our thriller as we get to see what features professional thrillers use.

Convention Mind Map

Below is my mind map that Chloe and I created using the films, The prisoner and The silence of the lamb. From this task I have learnt about the different in a thriller and what I will need to use when it comes to making my own thriller opening.

Upon the discovery that the money really is missing a FBI agent gets put on a case to find out how they did it. However this becomes difficult as dark secrets and hidden agendas occurs. Through out this film they emphasise on the saying ‘ The closer you look, the less you see’.

The Preliminary Task

I worked with a group to try and produce the following brief :

A continuity task involving filming and editing a character opening a door, crossing a room and sitting down in a chair opposite another character, with whom she/he then exchanges a couple of lines of dialogue.

This task should demonstrate match on action, shot/reverse shot and the 180-degree rule.

In this piece our group used the following camera techniques:  mid shot, close up, long shot and pan. We used these camera techniques to create a sense of dialogue between two people and to make the audience think something suspicious is happening

I have learnt to use the following continuity editing rules: Match on action, shot reverse shot and 180 degree rule. I used these rules to create a short clip of film that flowed together smoothly

I have learnt to use the following tools/techniques in Premiere Pro: Importing, razor cutting, cropping and exporting. I used these rules to create effective scenes that worked well together and to erase any mistakes that occurred during filming.

If i was to do this project again I would do some things differently, for instance I would make sure to film each shot multiple times to make it easier when it comes to editing the shots and putting them together and also in case some shots didn’t work well. Also I would make sure to follow the 180 degree rule correctly as when we where filming the shots we filmed over the wrong shoulder so it looked like the shot was flipped.

Camera Techniques

Below is a Vine that I created to test out different camera techniques. I used a medium/long shot at the begging to show the two girls walking down the corridor. Next I used two pan shots, one with a boy walking and the other with a boy running. After using the pan shots, I went on to use a tilt, to emphasis the height of the scaffolding. Lastly I used a mid shot at a high angle to show Robyn looking up at the camera.
