Soundscape Running Order

For this task, we had to make a list of all the sounds that we would need to either record or find after filming day. The majority of these are Foley sounds and therefore we will need to record them. This has helped us because we became a lot more organised and really understood what we needed to do next.

Synaesthesia Soundscape

Synaesthesia refers to the process when senses provoke other senses into action i.e. hearing colours, seeing tastes, feeling sounds.  It can also be ‘ideasthesia’.

In this task, we had to listen to this clip and write down things we envisioned. Here this helped us to understand how important it is to find the perfect sounds/ music for our thriller. This will be useful, as it will ensure that we think a lot more carefully about what sounds we do decide to choose, therefore this will help to improve our thriller opening sequence.

Titles Feedback

After posting our finished draft 2 to YouTube (that consisted of our added titles), we needed to get some feedback on things we should improve. We asked various media students for their opinions on these titles and what they thought we needed to improve.

We asked three different people the following questions:

    • Is the font of the titles suitable to our thriller?
    • What is your opinion on the positioning of our titles?
    • Are the transitions of/between titles conventional?

Some of the targets we received were:

    • To change the positioning of a couple of titles as the white colour was hard to see in some places.
    • To think about whether our main title should appear slightly later on and not at the very beginning of our opening sequence.

Draft 2 and Titles

For this task we had to edit out thriller opening sequence further. We did this by cutting some more clips and changing the colour/ brightness. This has helped to improve our thriller greatly. We also had to add titles and their transitions for this draft, this enabled the thriller to start to look professional and really start to come together.

Effects and Titles

Here are a few screenshots from our work in after effects. These show what we did and what tools/ techniques we used:

Here is the font design we decided to use.

This is a screen shot of the overall workspace, you can see how we laid out the titles and their specific timings.

This screenshot is one of the titles animation we decided to use, it is clear here how we found this transition and what one we actually used.

In this task, we had to create our titles for our thriller. Here we had to decide what font and transition would look best and fit with our thriller the most. For this we used text boxes to place our titles where we preferred them to be. We also used the effects and presets section to find our transitions, when we went into this we clicked on text, 3D text, animate in and selected the transition fade up characters. Furthermore, we believe that this transition worked best for our thriller and goes well with the font we used. This font is called ‘Courier New’, we put this in bold for the job titles and in regular for the names.

Next we had to decide what font we would use for our titles. We went through a lot of different fonts, to find the most fitting one. It was decided we wanted a simple but bold title that would stand out, and was very easy to read. In the document, we have selected 3 that we liked and 3 that we didn’t like. This has helped us, as we now understand how important it is for the titles to be as readable as possible for the viewer.

Our Titles List

Once we completed our titles research, we went on to complete our own titles list after seeing what was important to include. The following list will display our titles and the order they will appear in:

  • Morgan Price
  • Ewan Champion-Smith

Titles Research

To help us decide on the titles for our own thriller opening sequence, Ellie, Morgan and I carried out some research. This consists of three different documents, where we looked at the order of the titles and how they were displayed. These three films were Fury (2014), Gone Girl (2014)and Fast and Furious 6 (2013). Furthermore, this will help us with our own titles because it will give us ideas for the font, transitions and order.

In the documents below you will see the order of titles for these two opening sequences and a few screenshots to show the font and size of text used.

For this task we also had to complete a timeline for a chosen film. We watched the opening sequence for Fury (2014) and wrote down all of the titles displayed during the set time. We also had to write down any actions, sounds and music used. Here we discovered many different things about this opening sequence, for example we found out the transitions used, the size of the font and placing of the titles.

Draft 1

To achieve our first draft, we went on to edit our rough cut further. We managed to cut down clips and make the whole clip run a lot more smoothly. Also, we feel the opening sequence makes a lot more sense as it seems to be in a much better order. Furthermore, after the re-filming day we managed to discard the dark shots and use the new, better lighting ones, improving the story line of our thriller a lot.

Once we completed our first draft, we had to share it with another group. This assessed our work and gave us some very good advice. We now know what we have done well in and what needs to be improved. Without this peer assessment, we may not have noticed some of the things that should be worked on.

Some targets we received from this task were:

  • Use some different shot transitions.
  • Sort out the two audio mistakes.

Editing Process

During the editing process, we used a few different techniques to help us work through all of footage. This included the razor tool and the mark in and mark out brackets. The razor tool helped us to cut up a single clip without deleting any of it, we used this when we needed to cut up the shots of Ewan marching. Next, the mark in and mark out brackets allowed us to cut away at a clip, until we were left with the section we wanted. We used this tool, for example, when Morgan and Monica were arriving, here we were able to cut away the unnecessary extra footage we filmed in the clip. Overall, we learnt how important these tools are in order for us to achieve the best possible result when cutting the footage down, therefore we were able to focus on only the necessary footage.

Also, we used lighting and speed/ duration effects, these enabled us to improve our first draft even further. We used the lighting effects to brighten up a few of the shots in the bunker that were a little too dark. This has improved the lighting and therefore has made the image a lot clearer. Moreover, we also used the speed/ duration effect to help us speed up a few clips. For example, a few of the panning shots we filmed were a little slow and so became boring. By using this tool, we were able to speed up these shots, until they were exactly how we wanted.

Below are a few screenshots from our editing process, that display the information above:
