Your Media Bubble

‘Knowing yourself is the beginning of all wisdom’ Aristotle.

In Media Studies one of our hopes is that you will become more critically aware of the media messages you receive.

An early lesson in Media Studies is to reflect upon your own media consumption and start thinking about how you are getting use or pleasure from it.

A theory which tries to describe this comes from two psychologists Blumler & Katz. They suggested that the media fulfils four functions:

  1. Entertainment (have enjoyable experiences)
  2. Social Interaction (create friendship groups around media)
  3. Personal Identity (create a sense of our own values, attitude & beliefs)
  4. Information (what you need to know (and buy?))

Task

Create a collage of some of the media you consume.

Reflect

What function(s) does each fulfil?
